Subject: Well I'm stuffed if I can work it all out - Daz'n Poser figures etc..

Maybe I shouldn't try to work it all out after I've had too many schooners of sherry but I can't get me head around it all. I've given Daz Studio a try and had to finally admit I can only do Poser. Try a I might I just can't work out how to get Daz to work (I get bored and go and provoke a Big Daddy in Bioshock for a bit instead). So, stick with Poser but use the Daz characters. What a brilliant idea! After some scratching of the head I got the Daz library in as a runtime including some Genesis 2 folks and even got a figure or two to load in with the DSON importer. Hair? No, loads but nothing appears. Props? Nah, only a scenery bit, nothing else and certainly not two things together. So, what am I after? Two small things. How do I get the Daz items into Poser properly and which can I use? I mean it's G3F this and G2 that, Posers G2's... I've lost thread of what I'm thinking about already. Anyway, I would like to buy some of the big bundles of stuff from Daz but I don't want to spend a lot of my Monopoly money until I know what I buy will work. Any comments?.. Now where's my beer assistant? BEER ASSISTANT???

Genesis 3 is not really Poser-compatible - there are ways to bodge them in, but they lose features in the process.

For the rest, content with Poser Companion Files should load as long as both the PoserCFs and the DSON Core (native DAZ Studio) files are installed to a Poser external library (the nearer the top of the list the better). Having the content appear to load but then not come into the scene usually means the Data folder with the geometry definitions is not in a Poser library folder.

If you have Studio and its content installed, I installed the Poser Companion files to Studio's Content folder and added it to the Poser Library as an external runtime. Genesis 1 and 2, which are included with Studio, will work in Poser with the DSON Importer, but as Richard notes, Genesis 3 will not..

Since you have the DSON importer installed, go to Dimension3D's website. Download and install his free DSON loader script. You can use it to load duf and dsf files. I find it especially useful for loading DS only props into Poser. You do have to tweak the materials on the props but that's no big deal.

Tried the script but nope, sorry, nothing doing. All I can get in is the Genesis 2 Base male and females. The DSON importer takes a while to load these in but anything else it zooms through and nothing appears. I've got the Users/Shared/My Daz 3D Library added as a Runtime if that's any help. I've seen this if I try to load something in Poser where the .obj file is missing but as I'm not familiar with DAZ then I'm stumped. Odd thing is when I look into the My DAz 3D Library at the Genesis 2 female & male items there's four parts showing. A .cr2, a .duf,, a .png & a .py. This is the same for the other characters that don't come in so I'm guessing that there's parts missing from another folder. Could it be a Poser10/Daz Studio issue? Everything is in the default directories. I suppose it's keeping me interested.

I use the loader script mainly for props in duf or dsf format. You need the importer for figures. The only other way is to use the pre-DSON cr2 method. It can be done. There is an older tutorial available at DAZ that comes with helper scripts that can aid in creating the cr2. Basically, you generate an obj file in DS. You then generate a cr2 using the cr2 export function in DS. DS4.5 and greater messed up the cr2 exporter so you don't always get a clean cr2. The cr2 generated requires manual clean up and correction in the app of your choice. D3D's Poser File Editor is good as is PhilC's Editor and the older Cr2Editor.

The Dimension3D script is still using the DSON Importer, it's just a different way to give it the name of a .duf file to load - with PoserCFs the Poser library file runs the python script which fires up the importer and tells it to load the .duf file (and then the library file may have Poser-native materials to apply to the loaded file); with the script it opens a file browser to allow the selection of a .duf file to load, which is then passed to the importer just as the Python script in a PoserCF passes it.

Even if you get DSON working properly, there are many threads on many boards with folks talking about how well it actually works. I have an iMac with 8 GB of RAM, and I have found I can only use two Genesis 2-based figures at a time, and unless you turn subdivision off, performance is glacial. But you can go the CR2 route, which is what I have done. You convert DS figures, clothes, etc to Poser native ones that have no slow DSON overhead. You can still use DSON for poses, expressions, etc. My experience leads me to recommemd that You buy Netherwork's Creator's Toybox. It tells you exactly how to do that and cleans up the files for you. It takes some time, but boy is it worth it.

Sorry, been away for a while again. Thanks for the feedback, I'll certainly have a close look at the Toybox route as I'm not sure how I'd go about the conversion to CR2. Cheers! (Happy Christmas!)
