Subject: Indirect Splotches

Does anyone know how to eliminate these splotches that appear when I use indirect lighting? They go away when I use regular lighting/Splotchy Render.jpgRender Settings.jpg

I used point lights with an inverse square setting.

I'm not real familiar with Poser, but in most programs increasing the light quality will help with this. Looking at the settings visible in your screenshot, if bumping up the Indirect Light Quality does not help, try increasing the Pixel Samples. Increase the samples slowly though - that setting will probably increase render times significantly.

Also, just as an aside (again, I'm not real familiar with Poser so this could be totally wrong), you might want to un-check the SSS box - any subsurface scattering on that one character won't be visible at that size/distance and it is probably slowing your render down to calculate it.

Since you have superfly use that instead. Fixing these in firefly is not worth the time/effort it would take (and they still may not get fixed)

You're talking about the light spots all over? That's light reflecting off something metallic/reflective, possibly your lamps. Don't know if there's a fix. What I did as a work around was to render once without the offending items and once with and post worked them together.

FireFly has problems with indirect light with indoor scenes. You can try if the splotchies go away when you raise the settings for indirect light, additionally you should take care that no light with inverse square falloff is really close to a surface, since the reverse falloff is calculated from a distance, everythig closer is lighted extremely bright and makes splotchies too.

Using SuperFly will get rid of these problems, but you will need to redo the materials,to get a good result. Superfly has no problems with point lights and indoor indirect light.

I'm assuming from your original post that you are using mesh lights/emitters to illuminate the scene? It looks like insufficient samples, as the light intensity looks strong enough. Don't use the main render settings box, use D3D's in scripts>partners>dimension3D>render firefly. Use the IDL settings on the right hand side. Don't use the sliders, manually input the numbers. For example, the slider goes to 2024 samples, but if you put in 4000 samples, it uses 4000. Personally I don't use mesh lights much in Firefly because of the samples needed and the massive increase in render time. I tend to use point or spot lights. atmospherics.jpg This scene is lit entirely by the skydome externally (so a mesh light). You can see a few of your pale splotches n the shadows on the left side of the image. Increasing samples was the only way to reduce them. Add atmospherics, this wasn't a fast render.
