Subject: Using G2 hair in Poser

Wonderland ( ) posted Thu, 24 March 2016 at 12:18 PM · edited Sat, 21 September 2024 at 5:07 PM

I finally started using G2 in Poser because I had previously bought a lot of morphs for it but still couldn't figure out DS so using in Poser. My question is, if there is a hair for Genesis 3 and it says it has a DSON installer but makes no mention of a Poser CR2 or materials, what does that mean? Completely unusable in Poser? Also can Genesis 2 hair with a CR2 be used on V4? Is there a utility for that or will it actually be morphable since I have the V4 shape for Genesis.... I miss the good old days when everything was Poser compatible! Also does Genesis 3 hair fit Genesis 2 characters??? So confused with all these incarnations... Thanks!

Answer to Q 1: it means it is only for DS. However, converting the hair for Poser is not impossible. If you follow the tutorial for Wildial's clothing conversion, you can have G3F fully functional in Poser.

Answer to Q 3: No, you will not a conformable Genesis 2 hair for V4 in Poser unless you do some custom changes in DS first. And I'm not sure of reverse processing.

I believe the material settings in DS are not transferrable to Poser environment, so you may get a conforming poseable shape, but not the options to change colours.

Not entirely true. If you convert to MC6 material files, you may get it working in Poser. Haven't tried any extensive conversions but I did create material files for G3F which worked.

Snarly's EZSkin works on hair, so the materials can be Poserized that way...

... a DSON installer ...

Actually, the real answer is confusion in the term DSON. DSON does not mean Poser support (or even import-ability). DSON is a DAZ term for an object format used by DS, and has nothing to do with Poser or DSON import. DSON is also not a special export format for Poser.

The key buzzword to watch for is "Poser Companion Files" or "PCF". Or if they mention files as "DUF", that is DS only. You'll need to see mention of CR2/HR2, etc if you expect build-in Poser support.

DSON import is not magic, as some things just do not map. For example, lately DAZ has been coming out with a lot of weekly-freebie scenes (like a shower or room) which is DS only. While I can use DS to create the PCF file, often the materials are, err ... unfortunate. I assume this is why artists might choice not to "just make PCF files", as they do need to spend some quality time re-doing the materials.
