Check out this link. It takes you to a great website with many wonderful 3ds meshes. You can import these files into your poser program, but they are missing textures and colors. How hard is it to make textures for these products and is there someone here who could? Think of all the great images we could make with these "props".

Well you can always import the model into UV mapper, make a texture map, save it, and re-save the model with the mapping coordinates, all with UV mapper. Make the texture map in your favorite paint program. Import the barenaked model into Poser, apply texture you made for it then VOILA! You got yourself a nice textured model. I've read about a zillion tutorials and this is the basic way of doing it. Personally, I'm just getting past understanding UV mapping and haven't done my own textures yet (I'm making an altar to use in a new Halloween scene and haven't textured it yet). It takes a while but you will eventually get used to it. I'm a non-artist, IMO, and can't draw worth a darn, but I do have computer experience and that helps some. This was short and sweet but I do hope it makes some sense. :) Thanks, Kara

Wonderful site - thanks for mentioning it.

Should mention that if you want to import it into UV Mapper you will have to convert it to .obj first. UV Mapper will only work with .obj. :) Laurie

How do I convert a 3ds file to obj then Laurie?

WarriorDL ( ) posted Wed, 10 October 2001 at 1:20 PM

Poser imports 3DS. Import the 3ds, then export as obj.

Yeah... forgot that :) I did exactly that just now. I took the stage coach from the website and imported it, then exported it as an .obj file but it didn't work. All I got was a black background after it had "loaded" the file. There are some white dots here and there but now pattern to it. I thought it might be just that model so I downloaded a second and the same result. UVMapper displays the status when it has loaded the file (got an error and a question if I wanted to fix it on the stage wagon) but it didn't help. Could someone try this and explain how it works? I'm using the latest version of UVMapper btw. And there was no explanation except for Poser 3 how it wanted the files exported from Poser (I'm using Poser 4 w/Pro Pack). - Ste

you might want to try lithunwrap, its a uv mapper but it has more import capabilities than uv mapper. it imports 3ds cob lwo etc and can save as obj. its also free to dl. stu

When you import the object into UVmapper and it is all black with white bits just hit New UV map and select planar Z and split and that might help fix the mess. I have that happen on some downloaded object files.

Thanks :) I accidently figured that out myself. Now I've got it showing. I'll try more later, now I've got to edit some movies... the world is full of fun stuff... we have so little time to play with all the great gadgets and software we have.
