Subject: Looking for a copy of an old newsletter freebie

XiMiX ( ) posted Mon, 22 August 2016 at 10:47 AM ยท edited Sun, 22 December 2024 at 5:10 AM

Long story short, had to wipe my operating system, trying to get everything back on track, loading old scene files reveals what items I am missing; for instance; FWArt - Crystal for V4

Any help would be appreciated.

Newsletter freebies are only available during the newsletters month so, no chance if you don't have a backup.

Yeah, that's why I am wondering if anyone can make me a backup copy.

Jules53757 ( ) posted Mon, 22 August 2016 at 10:56 AM

For sure not as this would be a copyright violation if the Readme doesn't state that it is allowed.

Are you being sarcastic? If so it doesn't exactly come through in text. Why would it be a copyright violation if it was a freebie?

Copyright law doesn't take into account if it was free or not, the person that created it still has the right to restrict redistribution.

Well, I am not here to argue copyright laws but suffice it to say even the 'updated' views on copyright don't really lend itself to the practical uses and shared nature of digital content. I am just wondering why it would be copyright if it was freely given in the first place. Just seems pointless to me is all. Anyways, if someone has the **Crystal for V4 **character from FWArt and took a second to check the readme, then get back to me I would appreciate it. I have tried contacting them directly, no reply yet and this will be my 3rd unsuccessful attempt at getting back an important freebie that i lost when my PC crapped out on me. Much appreciated.

You might want to check your past orders ... you might be able to re-download it? Perhaps I don't get the situation. if so, I apologize and contacting the original vendor and explaining the situation would most likely be your best bet.

"Freebies" and things like vendor offered "BOGOS" don't appear in your account. I learned awhile ago that I would generally rather have 50% off a product rather than a "Bogo" because it became hard to track whether I had already purchased it. Then, too I would lose the opportunity to have it backed up in an account if my HD crashed, which given the amount of data that Poser and 3D generates becomes a painful proposition. Having it in your account then has value with Rendo and Daz, but Smith Micro lets things expire - even if you pay extra -so it doesn't really matter there. I rarely buy characters at SM in large part because of that policy..

I have the FW Crystal character listed in my records as a V4 character "freebie" offered by FWArt on or around November 10, 2012, if the date helps. If FWArt gives permission I can look for it and see if I can send it to either you or back to FWArt, at the artist's direction. FWArt may not have it anymore either for the same reason.

Yes Thank you. I do appreciate it. I contacted them, we will have to see if they get back to me. I also purchased Nieves and Frostbite (i think) which are similar characters to theirs but none of them have those epic lashes like crystal does. ;)

YAY! Fred got back to me!

Hi I am not on my PC at the moment, so I cant check if I still have her. Though I doubt it... but will have a look. If you can get her from anyone else then don't worry, I don't mind. But will have a look and see what I can find next time I am back on my PC, which wont be till Tuesday though. All the best Fred

So if anyone has a copy of the zip file they can host for me to download temporarily, you would make me a very happy camper! :D

Alright! The Vendors are pretty nice regarding their freebies and I wouldn't give up my copyrights on it either. That issue aside, I'm glad you got what you are looking for. I've had the same thing happen to me and was fortunate they (Vendors) are very nice folk and would send me a link or let me know if it was okay another person passed it to me. I think they simply wish to make sure that no one is selling it or claiming it as their own.

XiMiX - Did you get your character?

Scormus ( ) posted Tue, 08 November 2016 at 6:30 AM

Whenever I try to view a newsletter freebie I get the following message: "Sorry! Access to this content is restricted." I would understand if this were only for "expired" freebies, however it also applies to current newsletters. For example today is 8th November 2016; if I go to the November newsletter it highlights the Anagord character, but I get the above message when I click on the image. Is something going wrong? Do we have to sign up for something? I am definitely logged in to the site, not just as a guest, and subscribe to the regular daily stack of emails as well as regularly purchasing content. Is it only available for one or two days?

@Scormus. Where are you viewing the newsletter? Are you viewing this in a mail client or in our Newsletter archives section? It looks as though you're not signed up to receive newsletters from Renderosity. If that's the case, you will not be able to download this, and other, free product(s). If you'd like to change this option, please edit your account profile and, near the bottom of the page, there is an option to select 'Yes' next to receive newsletters. Once you do that, try accessing the free newsletter item. Thanks!

Thanks for the tip, @thaaksmaa. I made the change yesterday, but am still not getting anywhere with the Nov edition from your archives section.

thaaksma ( ) posted Thu, 10 November 2016 at 12:18 PM

@Scormus - Please give this another try. I made a minor change and would like to see if that helps. Let me know if you get a chance. Thanks!

Seeing as we are all here, just for the record...

All my Freestuff is redistributable. I ask that the files are kept intact, as supplied by me, and that you don't claim the work as your own.

Simply put, if you ever lose an old Freebie of mine and you can't get it here, ask another user; it's ok by me.
