Subject: Poses and Mats - enuf awhreddy

Huolong ( ) posted Thu, 11 October 2001 at 7:48 AM · edited Sun, 26 January 2025 at 8:18 PM

Once upon a time, there weren't very many pose files (pz2). Then along came Schlabber and others and we have tons of poses. In fact too many of them .... all good. Now come the Mat pose files. I can't find enough room for them. And consolidating pose files into fewer directories is complicated by using file names like 1, 2, 3, etc. They can't be carried over. It would be nice if there was another library for mat files. ??????

Incidently, I know when you save a Pose you can put a space in front of it, I think you can do the same for a new folder, as long as you do it in Poser (not renaming in Windows explorer). This is a usefull way to sort stuff, when I did my mermaids I had a bunch of MATS plus some real poses, I put a space in front of the Pose names, they then float to the top of the list, I think because ACSII is before ASCII "a". Sort of a little trick of the trade!

I dont wish to sound shortsighted, but why would you put everything youve acquired into your runtime folder? Wouldnt it make more sense to archive it and pull it on an as-needed basis so youre not forcing Poser to jump through too many hoops everytime it starts up?

Huolong ( ) posted Thu, 11 October 2001 at 1:30 PM

Virtual, that's because I don't know what I want until I want it and looking in a mess of archived files plus copying them over to the pose files seems like more work than my disordered mind can tolerate. OBTW, my Runtime folder has 75,892 files that take up 24.3 GB of space. I also have an "outside" folder separate from Runtime that has 3.94 GB with 7,297 files I use for root files for the development of props, plus utilities and updates. I'm a pack rat by trade now working as a professional recluse.

24.3 GIGS??? Are you INSANE??? Learn to archive, grasshopper. The direction you head is the road madness knows.

Click on the Poser5 Wishlist (up top) & tell CL about it. May see it in upgrade.

Most creators of poses and such name them with their system in mind. That is understandable since for some, such as Schlabber, who have literally created hundreds or thousands it is the only way for them to remain sane. It can cause some danger to the sanity of the end-user however. The link will take you to the download page of a nifty little file renaming program I use. It is brilliant. It is easy. It is free.

Gee, that is a big folder! I guess we now know you can have them at least that big, though! I agree though, never archive anything, off the HD means your forget you have it.

Huolong ( ) posted Thu, 11 October 2001 at 2:47 PM

Seems perfectly sane to me. I got 60 gigs of memory. Most of the space is taken up by texture files. Pozes are extremely small taking up only 811 megs but have 23,171 files (includes .rsr files and the new image files for each pose directory I use). That's 31% of the files but only 3.3% of the space in my Runtime directory. My shrink says that Posadiction Disorder isn't a form of insanity according to DSM IV. So there!

24.3 GB does seem like an enormous compendium IMVHO the website where you display all your work (based on that extensive working Runtime collection) must be very impressive.

Huolong ( ) posted Thu, 11 October 2001 at 11:30 PM

My work is classified. Not for dissemination outside of my close inner circle of admirers (all three of them: me, myself and I). On rare occasion, I have desensitized the subject matter for semi-public distribution. A few are in the gallery.

What irks me is that you can't nest pose groups. It would be great if the menu could handle SchlabberComic PosesSet 1 instead of having everything at one level.

Huolong ( ) posted Fri, 12 October 2001 at 6:02 AM

Good idea, or maybe the ability to have more than one directory of a given type (poses, characters, etc).

I had a conference with my partners, me and myself, and released some previously published images into the gallery. They were posted in this forum at one time or another relevant to some topic that was so important I can't remember what.

I am loath to archive the stuff in my runtime directory. PZ3 files and end products like images, I'll archive (twice). I prefer to decrease the number of directories within a library and increase the number of items in a directory by type. This is a function of how much stuff is available in any given category and how do I want to access it. The criterion is each case is visual - how long is the list? There are only eight categories of libraries and that is the shortest span in all of Poser. If each category of library (poses, characters, etc) could be split, the number of directories within a library could be reduced to a more easily managed number. Nesting might be a problem with the libraries as they are accessed directly from the face of Poser. The other directories are not.

The info on the NTI site says that it can store a gig on a 650 meg CD. That's a 54% increase in storage which is nice but not impresssive. Hardly an entire 60 gig drive. Nice to know though.
