Subject: a question of textures

Jilly ( ) posted Thu, 11 October 2001 at 5:58 PM · edited Sat, 18 January 2025 at 11:54 PM

I have just downloaded a lovely willow tree, but it's come in one "block", if I add a bark texture the leaves also take that texture, is there a way round this, or will I have to take it into a paint programme? Jilly

Jilly, may be ts clearer if you can say what format that Willow tree is in...like dfx, obj, 3ds etc. Bill

Chances are, being in one piece, it would be very difficult to UVmap. Probably the best you could hope for is to set up a Mixed material in Vue of bark and greenery, then adjust the altitude and slope to how it best supports the model structure.

Not sure what format it is, but if its obj or 3ds, they can be in group. But in 3ds or obj you still can ungroup them or use "Object Edit" and do a "split" depending on how its modeled....sometime. Bill

thanks for answering people, sorry, I forgot to say it was dxf format (my vue (2) will not download anything but dxf). This tree was downloaded from 3d.com , it's perfect but for the fact I can't texture it the way I want.I will give the mixed materials a try though :-)

Jilly, can you post the exact address where you found the willow ? (3.com goes to a site wheree is nothing to download) Then I will see what is possible with this tree :-) Guitta

Jilly, if the model is already textured by whatever program its originated from, what you can do is pose it in Poser (if you have of course) and export as a bmp. In a Paint program, you can add or just leave the tree with a black background. In Vue, you can use this bmp file (jpeg, tiff etc...) on a plane. Not sure about Vue 2 but if its has a filter for alpha mask, you should do okay.

Guitta the exact address is 3dCafe.com on the plants & trees page in the free stuff section. Don't know if the attatched address will work, never posted one before. Thank you in advance. Tesign.... the model came as a default texture unfortunatly, nothing I do seems to make it look like a willow tree, just bark or foliage, or half and half, not the right halves either :-). Still trying though

Jilly, I remember Xfrog has a a willow tree. You may want to download the free full demo and see if it comes with it. Otherwise, there are some other very nice freebie of trees that you may like. Xfrog can export the model to obj format. But since you use Vue 2, may be the couple of trees there in Vue format may be to your liking.
