Poser - OFFICIAL F.A.Q (Last Updated: 2024 Nov 01 1:48 pm)
You might not be able to do it directly in Poser, but if you have access to other 3d apps for instant 3ds max you can use PoserFusion to import your scene to that and make the VR rendering in there. Might be possible in Blender as well, I don't know a lot about that application. But it should be possible to make it work for VR one way or the other i think.
Hello Skuts,
If you want to do a VR scene with Poser, I explain that in a tutorial. Included with the tutorial is a Python script to generate the images need to create the panoramic or the equirectangular image. These special images can be viewed with a VR headset. Here is the link:

I think the practicalities of the device put people off at the moment, when someone can produce a cheap, light weight cordless headset it might generate more interest. I have seen a smartphone that comes with a VR type control but that would mean SM developing a version of Poser for Andriod or IOS.
The microsoft hololens seems an interesting alternative concept, the augmented reality device comes with a scanning technology that maps the users environment into 3D space and can add texture in realtime. It also allows additional 3D objects to be included in the view which is where Poser could come in.

I was thinking more of creating 3D renders or even animations and veiwing them through VR. I believe that Blender is starting something similar.
Maybe a bit off topic but here: https://forums.oculus.com/community/discussion/45884/post-your-first-medium-sculpts are some interesting sculptures done from within a Oculus Rift program called "Medium."
It allows the modelling of 3d characters in a VR environment using "touch" controllers that emulate your hands.
It's very intuitive and from the input and outcomes it produces looks quite nice.
One requires the CV1 VR goggles and of course a suitable computer so it's not that cheap. But very interesting how Gamers are flocking to this App. Folk that wouldn't usually touch a 3D program !
With the Octane plugin for Poser you can create VR renders and VR animations. They are Oculus compatible, so you can view them with those devices. I made some test renders with it and they look pretty good. (I used the Samsung VR Gear to view them.) I have not heard of any plans to implement it in cycles or firefly
Octane is a GPU render engine (see https://home.otoy.com/render/octane-render/features/)
The Octane Plugin for Poser is an addon for Poser where you can export your scene to the Octane render engine avalable at Otoy as well.
Creating a VR is simple an output option.
You create your 3d scene in Poser, then start the plugin (it ia a poser addon), adapt some materials if you want to, and render it,
Export settings for Oculus would be Panoramic camera, cube map projection, Stereo Output Side by Side, output dimension: 18.432x1.536
Since you need both the Octane Render engine and the plugin, it is not a cheap, but it is a solution

Thanks, wimvdb,
Does the Plugin for Octane allow one to actually create/ model figures/ objects etc etc from within the Poser program itself whilst viewing the Scene in VR? Or is it just another render engine that requires or deals with an imported Poser scene? I'm looking for a "decent" VR app that allows one to view a scene from within the Poser program in VR, not requiring an export to a third party program. I'd like to fire up Poser put on my CV1 VR goggles and start work !! Not have to deal with exporting stuff to 3rd party apps and all the ghastly editing then required.
At the moment I can export a Poser scene to Unity via FBX and deal with it there in VR, free of charge. But one is limited to translations/ light placements and simple animation editing such as frame length and speed and keyframe. mods. I am probably going to need to wait :( ??
The plugin runs within Poser. It has its own viewport where the render occurs. You can set the viewport to react to changes in the poser scene (sun, camera changes, prop changes, morphs, poses, etc). But this render viewport is just what the poser camera sees.
The VR portion is a panoramic camera which is not present in Poser. Even if it were, it would not properly display on a screen. So you can set up your scene in Poser, get live updates in the Octane viewport, but when you want to watch in VR, you need to render it to a panoramic camera. The viewport changes to a 2d view of that ,where the up/down/le/ri for each eye are rendered next to each other , which is what the occulus format essentially is.
To see the VR output you need to view it through a VR display after the render is finished.
No other 3rd party apps are involved . The only changes you have to make to your poser scene are the materials (if you are not satisfied with the default conversion). If you make any changes, they are preserved in the Poser scene, so next time you load your scene, they are all there and you can continue where you left off.
To be honest though, I have not made any animations in VR, so whether that works properly, I do not know.
Interesting . So it only works on the render itself? Not with the User/Perspective viewport? I'm hoping for a plugin that does a lot more than that. One that works with all the Poser workflow in real time will be nice. A plugin that replaces the Poser Perspective viewport with VR goggles. But that's still in the future by the look of things.
The only VR application that allows one to actually model/ add materials/ bumps and lights in real time seems to be "Medium" which is an Oculus only program and limited to "sculpting" at the moment.
It's also a simple thing to add Oculus integration to Unity and pretty simple to import Poser stuff to Unity. But it will be terrific to work with Poser itself in Virtual Reality without any fuss.
But the Octane plugin is a great way to view the completed render with immediate updates, that's for sure! A good start indeed.
Have you tried "Medium", Wimvdb?
I have not tried Medium. Looks interesting, but still in the early stages. I might give it a try when I have some time.
Having the Poser preview viewport in VR would be awesome, but I think they would mean a major rewrite going to a different graphics engine. And even then, i think the hardware requirements would be pretty high. Maybe it is too early for that.
Well I for one would love to be able to walk around inside my scene and pose it literally by hand, at least for setting up scenery like, moving props to create a room say. Or just walking up to LaFemme, taking her hand and dragging it so the IK can figure out how to get it where I want it. For non-IK body parts, maybe pop up an axis wheel for more precise posing, show the dial panel beside what you're manipulating perhaps. And of course, render from your point of view if you want to.

Does anyone know if SM has any plans to integrate Poser with virtual reality? VR seems like a field ripe with possibilities.
