Subject: Crash/Freezing Problems with Blender 2.78a

Hi everyone,

I have installed latest windows updates including Nividia driver. Ever since I upgraded blender, windows and drivers (automatic update) blender 2.78a takes up to 20 minutes to open models in mainly .obj formats but also other formats like Collada etc. Opens start window but as soon as I am trying to import any model blender is "not responding" for ages. Once it managed to open the model after a long time, I can hardly work with it as it keeps freezing and stuttering, blinking etc. I tried just about anything from re-install, deleting blender foundation folders all the way to system restore and go back to to previous version with no results.

I have checked all hardware components like graphic card, processor etc. all the way to BIOS and all seems to be good and working.

Any help is highly appreciated as I really like the program and doing a lot of work with it, but as it stands are absolutely unable to do anything with it whatsoever. As from startup all I am getting is straight out frustration.

What is the file size of the obj files that you are trying to load? Have you tried downloading and using the zip file version of Blender rather than the install version?

Tnx for your reply. Yes I have tried both versions.same results. File size I tried were various from 8mb allthe way to 50mb. Same results.. All worked fine with version 2.77 but that also does not work anymore after all the updates. Drives me nuts and really don't know what else to do anymore

OK if it worked with 2.77 I would do a complete uninstall of Blender then before installing again go to C:UsersUsernameAppDataRoamingBlender FoundationBlender and delete the folder for 2.78 something in this folder may be corrupt and preventing a proper reinstall of working. The reinstall 2.77 test the file that they are properly working again like before. If they work normally like they should (Delete and download fresh versions of 2.78) then I would try using a newly downloaded Blender 2.78 zip file and test it to see if you experience the same problems or if it works now you can either decide to use Blender from the zip file or reinstall normally. If the problem continues I would download graphic drivers from Intel Windows drivers thru automatic updates are usually a couple of months behind. I know that my steps above are a bit frustrating but sometimes the easiest to determine where the problem is. Hope this helps keep us informed

The singular thing that stands out to me is the first part of your statement. This sounds very much like a compatibility issue with Blender and the latest Nvidia drivers you installed for your GPU. Try going into Blender's User Preferences > System, and change the Compute Device to None, CPU. If it's already on that setting, then try using CUDA with your GPU. Be sure to Save User Settings before exiting the preferences. If either of those changes makes a noticeable difference, then the possibilities of issues have narrowed down significantly.

I am sorry I missed that part about the Nvidia drivers saw Intel Graphic which I know I had a issue with when I built my system the i7 core have their own graphic drivers and there was an issue if you have where the only drivers that should be allowed to update are the Nvidia ones highly recommend to follow the steps that LuxXeon has mentioned above

It may not have anything to do with the Nvidia drivers, but at least we can try to rule that out before embarking on some deeper changes. If issues persist, however, then I'd also recommend trying to roll back the driver updates if possible, since the issues began immediately following their installation.

Also check to see if your computer is actually using your nvidia 650m card and not the Intel HD graphics 4000. Go to control panel / device manager. Under display adaptors make sure your nvidia 650m card is listed there.

I don't know as much as the others here, but I can say I experienced something very similar to what you described in Blender recently too. It drove me nuts for days. Finally I figured out it must have been the driver update I installed to my geforce gtx card from my geforce experience panel. I contacted nvida for help, and they directed me a page that walked me through how to roll back the driver update. Sure enough, after I did that and rebooted my system, Blender began working fine again. This wasn't Blender 2.78 though. It was maybe 2.76 or 7. Anyways good luck. Hope you can figure it out.
