Subject: Is it worth it?

Currently I use PP 2010 & PP2014, is PP 2011 worth shelling out for? Is the render quality of p11 V erse pP7 worth the the p7 image + moderating the unrenderered img in the graphics prog of choice? I use Corel.

You also know me as Apple UK & Luckybears, I now only use my real world name online.

I'm moving this to the main Poser Forum, so you can get the opinions of the folks who use it!

Happy Rendering!

Yes, yes it is.

Superfly - Still getting the hang of this, but it is definitely the future

Autosave - need I say more?

Control Handles - very useful in creating life-like expressions (or someone getting punched in the mouth, which could be viewed as an expression.....)

The Game Dev features were also added - I love feature combining & polygon reduction (Combine figures & clothing, do 10% poly reduction and viola! I can fill every seat (13) on my Star Trek TOS bridge set).

The ability to make INJs within Poser is also useful (and hopefully they will add the ability to make a REM file in the next Service Pack).

It's also a bit faster in reading the libraries if you have large ones (I do.).

No, it's not worth it, if your upgrading from PP2014. PP11 has been awful disapointing release with disapointing new stock figures. There are some nice features in PP11, but not enough to justifie an upgrade. Wait for PP12, which could be at the end of this year.

Personally, I love Pro 11, and I think it was worth the $100 I paid for my upgrade.

For the next few days the Poser Pro 11 upgrade is on sale (in the Rendo Marketplace) for $58 and some cents. Even if it's not that impressive of an upgrade, it is, IMO worth paying $58 for.

I would definitely recommend the update as it is one that I have not questioned. Esp. if it is on sale.

It has an entire new pbr render engine (don't wory firefly is still there) based on cycles. I had to plug it even though I have never used it and don't think I ever will as I do NPR rendering.

The really big thing for me and I do not see many others mention is the improved comic book rendering and Geometric line edge. I believe they collaborated with artist Brian Haberlin to bring these improvements which is really impressive. For this type of art poser 11 is hands down the best tool to use and creates the best line art. And it is fun.

I admittedly do not use any of the stock content. Except maybe for a background character once in a while.

...now if they were to improve the already good animation tools....hint ...hint

For me, FireFly has always produced some great images, but there were boundaries I could not cross. SuperFly removed those boundaries. If you have no need to cross those boundaries you will not think SuperFly is worth it. If you want to cross them, then you will think it's not even an option, and none of the other features even enter the equation.

Here's an example I just rendered. This cannot be done as well with FireFly. You can come close, but not the same.

Like with studio 4.9 now. I had go back down in comp spec after powerful system died. With iray included as studio goes up then get more program not responding, when doing 3d light renders. Went up to pp11 and now with superfly included get same probs as with studio, program not responding every so often but had no program crash and could still render. I have never had problems on old posers. But i believe when studio 5.0 comes out and poser 12 comes out. The not responding and windows lock up every so often will get worse. But it is worth it for the extra things you can do with program, but has 1 big prob, from poser 4 up to poser 8 you could see thumbnails in library. From 9 to 14 and pp11 you get run time thumbnails that are blank.

It just came out at the beginning of last year, and they're still issuing updates. No way a new version comes out this year.

Poser11 released in November of 2015, actually.

I've read through all the replies, and I thank you for them. I did find BB's render impressive: I doubt I could reproduce the effects using other means, nonetheless the consensus seems to be 'no'. Given that, and that pp2011 would cost me GBP 199, I shall wait until pp2013 to upgrade.

I shall be posting in in freestuff under this name (My baptismall name) shortly.

Actually, I think the consensus was yes it is worth it. I didn't personally pick a side but I'd definitely upgrade. In fact, I did. You can also just wait until they have a sale to upgrade. Some of the upgrade deals are terrific.

On a related question, how many versions of Poser can I miss out before it stops qualifying for an upgrade price?

I'm not sure but I think you can still upgrade as far back as P9 at least.

The only time I see blank thumbnails is on older content that have rsr thumbnails, so I use P3DO to convert them to png. and they show up. I still have some content from 2000 that I converted to png and they show up now.

You might as well PAY attention, because you can't afford FREE speech

bagginsbill ( ) posted Tue, 31 January 2017 at 8:15 AM

There's also an RSR to PNG converter in free stuff here.

I also have a little bird in my head saying that Poser 7 would convert them on-the-fly if it saw them. Did that happen or am I making it up?

Honestly, I think you're just making up the bird thing.

:) Yep, version 7 was the last to auto convert rsr files.

I have decided to upgrade. The persuading factors were the render by BB (above), though I doubt I could ever reach that level of skill, and the positive opinions of pp11 expressed here.

Thank you.

Congratulations on upgrading. A little secret I found to making really realistic looking renders seems to be getting the lighting right.

Get it now while it's cheap. I liked the auto save and few other features I can't remember, but 11 Pro still crashed too much for me. I got fed up with the crashing so I went back to Poser Pro 2014. At least the Poser 11 and Pro editions are both 64-bit. Poser 10 wasn't which is the only reason why I ever side graded from 10 to Pro 2014 even though I never use the Pro features.

I would suggest having more memory and fast processor over the recommended requirements. My computer at the time had the recommended requirements and still crashed so I stopped using it. A few times it crashed while it was auto saving and that did it for me. There are probably updates for it that I never downloaded so it might work better now. I haven't reinstalled it in over a year.

At least if you upgrade now at a cheaper price and you don't like it, you will not have spent a lot more for it.
