What do people typically use for hair density values for final renders?

depends on the strand thickness but for actual hair, I usually use between 500 and 800. But note, that number varies depending on your measurement units. I have mine set at inches.

So, I guess I have to ask, What do you use for thickness settings? I have put the density up to 1500 and seen no change. Maybe I need to up the render settings. Still in Firefly, as the Superfly made too many changes I'm not ready to deal with yet. Thank you. Maran'Yahz F2H.PNG

Usually, that's .4 or .2 for the root and .2 or .1 for the tip. If you change something and don't see a change, also check to make sure you're working with the right hair group. I do that all the time. Looking at your picture, I see another possibility, but I'm not sure. I need to test first and don't have time right now. I'll post later today. I do have to say, even thin, that hair looks great. Did you make it?

Okay, I had a little time to do some checks. In the image, it looks like there are several hair groups that are very thin polygon wise, like the hair going over the top of the head, is just a strip of polygons going across the forehead (or maybe a few depending on the resolution of the cap) and pulled back to cover the head. Think comb over. You can try raising it up even more, but you may never get full coverage. You might have to add more groups.

Thank you. I didn't see a change in the render when I switched from feet to inches. Later I realized it did change the actual density settings. Now that I've increased the settings, it's choking on the render. Think I need to make some adjustments. I'll let you know how it works when I get something!

I made that with 13 hair groups, plus the ponytail made from a tube (which Poser doesn't have anymore).

parkdalegardener ( ) posted Fri, 21 April 2017 at 6:39 AM

Poser still has the tube. It's called open cylinder but there are easier ways to make the pony tail. Just use a ball and make a few polys your hair group. Grow them out as long as you need and place the ball just inside the head of your figure. The tail can be simmed separately from all the other hair groups and saved to the library for use in future projects with a simple mat change to match the hair you are adding the tail to.

I'll keep that in mind. I like the tube for this character as it adds a wrap at the base of the tail (unseen in this image).

ok. Finally got something I can work with! The hair was taking days (literally) to render at the inches settings, so I went back to feet and turned up the density to 20,000. I may turn it up some more. Thank you for the help! I also reviewed a Rendo tutorial for rendering that recommended maxing the "Number of Threads" in the General Preferences to speed up rendering, something I had missed before. Just throwing this out there in case it can help someone else. Maran'Yahz F6H.PNG

That looks great. Some of the better dynamic hair I've seen. Are his eyebrows dynamic too?

Dynamic hair does take forever in firefly. In superfly it's just as fast, if not faster than transmapped. If I could style it better, I'd use it more.

Yes on the brows. I like to make as much as I can myself. This project was started in PP12 and I haven't tried the new hair room in the newer versions yet. Might give that a try this week. Maran'Yahz Btl1a.PNG
