Your running dual 980Ti's...the only up from that is 1080Ti and it's really not that far Up, except in $$$...I could only dream of affording 980's much less 1080's...I'm an AMD guy (Hex Core-Radeon R-7)...I cut my teeth on marathon Render times of the day of single processor single threaded Rendering, I think maybe you're expecting too much from your Graphics Cards. Of course everything is Subjective but when it comes to High End Graphics Cards there really isn't a huge difference, some do some things better than others but do less in other areas it's half a dozen of one Six of another it's a personal preference. Personally 2.5 hours doesn't sound too bad depending on content of Render, of course if I could afford dual Nvidia 1080Ti's I might feel different...Patience my friend someone will come along with AI Graphics just think it up and it's Rendered....Poof!!

Opps just realised I posted this in totally the wrong place :/ Sorry :) 2.5hrs would not be so bad, but the issue is they are part of 60-100 image series, so I can be looking at a batch render of nearly 240hrs in some cases, which is why if a 1080 will cut a 2.5hrs to 1.5hrs then it makes a massive difference.
Believe me I do understand, I've been playing with Animations myself and rendering 100s of Frames seems like an endless task just to make a 30 second animation. I very much doubt you'd cut an 1hr off render time per Image just going with a 1080 over a 980, not GPUs that close in abilities anyway...

I was thinking of upgrading to a single 1080, wow dual 980's would be awesome! Right now I'm having my video card choke and go black if I move things around too much, so I know I'm going to have to do something soon. I have a GTX 750 Ti right now, and it is not cutting it. :( I am just getting back into rendering after a several year break, and it is amazing how obsolete my computer is now.

I currently have a system with 2 x NVIDIA GeForce GTX 980 Ti and am suffering from some pretty annoying render times on some scenes (up to 2.5 hours) and would like to get that down. So am considering the natural progression of putting in 2 x NVIDIA GeForce GTX 1080i Ti.
Basically, I'm trying to work out if it's worth sinking cash into the 1080 or grind my teeth and wait for the next one (1180 I guess?)
I have two questions on this: (a) I assume people have done this here, roughly what kind of realistic render improvement are we looking at? (I know this is pretty subjective based on what you are rendering)
(b) There appear to be lots of different types of 1080Ti cards out there, does anyone have any recommendations or are they pretty much all the same?
Other system stuff if needed: Overclocked Intel i7-5820K Processor Asus X99-A Motherboard 64Gb Ram 2 TB HDD, 7200 / 480 GB SSD
Thanks Lee
