Subject: Looing for a Military Crookneck Flashlight

cschell ( ) posted Tue, 11 July 2017 at 6:22 PM · edited Mon, 25 November 2024 at 10:32 PM

Hey all... as the title says, I'm trying to find a Poser model of a military "Crookneck" Flashlight for a scene I'm putting together. I have tons of military kit items, bags, pouches, ammo cases, web gear etc, but not a flashlight in the lot... Anyone know where I might find one like in this pic either free or paid?

Poserworld had one on their old site. I don't think it's on the new site, but an email wouldn't hurt I'm sure.

Doesn't look too hard to make. Got any accurate dimensions for the thing? If you can get some, I'll do it for free.

It's roughly 8 inches tall with a body of roughly 2 inches wide and with a lens 3 inches wide (including the lens housing). It takes 2 D-cell batteries, and the base has a compartment to store the spare lenses and a replacement bulb. There are two lenses inside the top covering a single incandescent bulb, the inner lens is clear plastic, and the outer lens is replace-able (the lens housing can be taken off) with either a clear lens, red filter lens (usually used) or a semi-opaque white lens. The switch on the side has 3 settings: Off, Signal, and On, and when in the Signal position there is a thumb button just above the switch that can be pressed to toggle the light on and off to send Morse code signals. There's a spring-steel clip on the back to allow the light to be attached to a belt or clipped to web-gear...

I dug out my service issue one from my field kit to get the measurements... they've been standard kit issue since the 60's but no set of GI gear I've found includes it and they should... :)

cschell ( ) posted Thu, 13 July 2017 at 10:15 AM

I should mention that the outer casing as well as the lenses are plastic but the switch, thumb button, switch housing, and belt clip are metal and riveted to the plastic casing in case that is important for materials set-up... and the two lenses in the head are spaced about an inch apart, each with its own removable housing to replace lenses and give access to the bulb and reflector. The base unscrews to change the batteries and to access the spare bulb and replacement lenses, I know it's not really necessary in a prop item, but I wanted to include the info just in case...

cschell ( ) posted Thu, 13 July 2017 at 10:33 AM · edited Thu, 13 July 2017 at 10:34 AM

Technically, WW2 Web-gear should include a variation of this as well... an all metal crookneck flashlight was GI issue for WW2 Para's and Rangers (though a slightly different shape originally), they were also adopted by British forces, and the 60's era version replaced the earlier model for wide-spread use in most NATO countries...

Thanks I appreciate it and I'm sure the other history buff's in our community would too! :)

This was the WW2 version in case you wanna take a stab at it as well... They were fairly close to the same size but the WW2 was all metal and only had a single replaceable glass lens, instead of the plastic lens/filter lens combination...

Going to make the first - plastic version - for now. If it's not too painful I'll work on t'other one later.

They stopped producing those quite awhile back. They are using higher tech gear now. Which explains why you can find them anywhere. I actually have a few of them in the damage control lockers I am responsible for on my ship. Both the crookneck and straight models. But even those are being phased out in favor of these:

OT, but just as interesting info, the Pelican Big Ed is the modern equivalent we clip onto firefighting suits (or airpack straps):

The Xenon bulbs are intense and energy efficient, and the large reflector area makes a huge difference in effective lighting.

I have one of the plastic-bodied military 2D crooknecks; they also have an infra-red filter, besides the color filters. I also have a little 2AA version.

There've been about a billion variations on the old crook-neck lights made over the years... small wonder though, they've only been in use for something like 70 years in various forms. Heck, they even sell knock-off types for camping at sporting goods stores. Hell of a long service life for a product that started in WW2... :)

Yeah... I finally broke down and modeled that one myself. I'd been hoping to avoid doing that as I have a massive terrains/vegetation pack I've been working on and I didn't want to get side-tracked in making something for a render I wanted to complete. I don't do many scenes that focus on people and didn't want to have to model something I'd only need once in a blue moon, but I'd been digging for days trying to find what I needed and just wasn't having any luck. Since I'd made the thing anyways I decided I might as well put it out there since there wasn't one available and at least now I can get my render done... :)

Thanks everyone for all your help! You can consider this Question resolved... :)

SamTherapy ( ) posted Thu, 20 July 2017 at 5:03 PM

Forgive the delay, please... Had a few problems getting the damn thing to look right, finally decided to make the surface detail with Displacement, since modelling it sends the poly count through the roof, along with my blood pressure.
Hope to get it all done next couple of days.

No worries I do appreciate the effort and yes all the fine ridges on the lens rings and the battery housing would send poly-counts sky high... :)

SamTherapy ( ) posted Wed, 26 July 2017 at 9:16 AM

Sorry for the delay; had a lot to do IRL.

Almost done now; just need to make the switch. There's a reflector and bulb behind the lens, too. I'll make up some suitable materials and hopefully get it out in the next day or so.

As I mentioned before, all the detail will be handled by displacement, so don't be concerned that there are no ribs and ridges visible here.

The different colours you see are the materials as I assign them. Making each one distinct makes it easier for me to keep track of what goes where. I never understood why people leave all their materials at one colour when modelling, or call them silly, meaningless names.torch.jpg

Here's a quick test with all materials applied, no displacement. Haven't drawn the displacement maps yet but the torch is fully UV Mapped.

Looks just like the one that belonged to my late uncle, a retired Air Force Major. The unit usually stood close to the family TV resting within a recessed bookcase "cubby" positioned beside the fireplace. I guess it stayed there for those times the tube driven CRT based unit required adjustment of the horizontal and vertical image controls in the back. even when he and my aunt got a chip controlled TV that did not require constant adjustment, the flashlight stayed there out of habit.

Sincerely,

Bill

SamTherapy ( ) posted Thu, 27 July 2017 at 2:46 PM

This is as good as it gets, I believe. The displacement is a little grainy in places, even saved as PNG but maybe you could improve on it.

I'll get it packed for distribution later. Please let me know where to send the files and I'll get them over ASAP. I'd also like to upload to Freestuff at some point, if that's ok with you.

Go ahead and upload it as a Freestuff item, I can always get the files that way. If I can tweak the displacement map somehow I'll let you know and will send you any fix I make for you to update the freebie if you like... Given the size of the item compared to an adult, I suspect that what you've got is more than sufficient for most purposes though. Thanks for being willing to make it for me! :)

I'm a little late making a suggestion, but Cybertenko has one in the Wasteland Weapons: Survivors Backpack that parents to the backpack or can be loaded individually. I only mention it because somebody might need a backpack or other items. I think it is just a prop and doesn't have any movable parts, but it does have a pose for the hand and is a smart prop.

There are a number of Nolan Style Batman accessories, Daleks (including a long overdue tutorial) and a few other bits and bobs.

Had so many different things eating into my time, plus the children being off school for summer, that I've had no real chance to get anything done, other than shoving a few polys around here and there. Even my Marketplace stuff is well overdue. I really must get my focus back.
