Subject: Superfly for dummies? Mine doesn't work

Darkworld ( ) posted Thu, 21 September 2017 at 4:11 PM · edited Mon, 06 January 2025 at 8:50 PM

Hi guys. So i've got a new rig mainly for poser and animation, GTX 1050 Ti card, oodles of ram, screaming proc etc. I always use Firefly for work but since Superfly is technically superior i decided i should learn it.

Can't make heads or tails of this, in any light Superfly just looks like garbage. What am i doing wrong? Thanks!

Superfly doesn't treat materials the same as firefly so many need to be redone. Lighting is also handled differently. Look through threads here and at https://forum.smithmicro.com/ for ideas. Also, Superfly is based on Cycles for Blender. Tutorials for that should help. And if you are comfortable going into blender, blendswap and other blender sites have samples you can load into blender and reproduce with poser.

Wow that makes it sound like it doesn't work out of the box. I'm sure I could get into dazzling renders if I did a lot of work on materials but my games work is high quantities of renders with heavy photoshop rather than a handful of perfect ones.

I do appreciate the tips though sounds like I underestimated the learning curve.

If you're needing large quantities of renders, you might want to stick with firefly. Unless you have a powerhouse computer, superfly renders can take a while. Many of my images are 1000x800 and they take all night to render.

Hi ya!

Superfly is Blender Cycles (if that has any meaning!)

When P11 was released, we were told to go to Blender's site and read up on Cycles. They may have updated the help files since then.....

if you go to the Material room - Advanced and click the Superfly root, any connections to nodes with a broken or dotted line are gonna fail in the Superfly render.

Good luck & happy rendering!

Nearly all the Blender Cycles nodes will work for SuperFly. However, the Blender convention for node trees reads from leftmost(inputs) to rightmost(output), which is the reverse in Poser Material Room. Some Firefly materials will work with SuperFly, But Not All - and Poser will tell you this in the log window as well as with dotted lines between shader nodes. Also a fact that lighting set-ups do make a difference - but this can be managed with fewer lights and better shaders setups under the SuperFly regime. Note that Material Room is now capable of using 3 different types of starting surface nodes. The default one is the Poser Surface. There is also a Cycles Surface base node and a Physical Surface Base node which you can call up by right clicking on the empty area in your Materials Palette work area. Certainly, Cycles Surface node and any shader tree built on that one, will be compatible with SuperFly, more so than with FireFly. Please do give the alternatives a try, because they do work much better than FireFly in some cases.

One issue is how highlights work, Cycles has a concept of roughness to calculate highlight size and intensity, IIRC the microfacet node in Firefly works in a similar way. If your mat above uses the normal specular color/value method it would be interesting to see what happens if it is replaced by the microfacet node.
