Subject: Do you use a laptop ,tablet ,notebook ? touch screen ? Can you CGI,game ?

RorrKonn ( ) posted Thu, 30 November 2017 at 1:43 AM · edited Thu, 28 November 2024 at 4:37 PM

I have always used towers to 3D I'm on my 4th one now and it's time to replace her. She's the best one ,lasted the longest ,but she's showing here age.

Can we 3D with touch screens ? Poser, C4D ,Blender, zBrush ,Photoshop ,Substance n all ?

If you have a touch screen do you still need a Wacom with zBrush ,Photoshop ?

Can we game with laptop ,tablet ,notebook ? touch screen ?

Any and all info appreciated. Thanks :)

The general problem with going smaller is how to dissipate heat, generally 3D apps require powerful cpus, powerful cpus draw a lot of current and that in turn generates heat, smaller devices have their components closer together so require more effort to cool, as the fans are close to your face the noise they generate can be more noticeable. I brought a surface to use with zbrush but found the fan noise too distracting, the other problem is there is no sensible right click on a tablet so the idea of having a device I could pickup and use casually didn't prove practical. There is a growing market for high performance gaming laptops (eg MSI) so the technology is improving.

You can model, UV map, and do scene setup on a laptop. The screens are puny and the chassis simply don't have the room for adequate cooling apparatus. So for rendering, a laptop will throttle down and/or face early death. That limitation is exacerbated with super-thin "airweight" laptops and tablets.

I buy used (aka "refurbished") enterprise gear; professional workstation towers with two processors on the motherboard and plenty of RAM. For render slaves, refurb server blades with dual processors and plenty of RAM.

In theory, I can model and paint on my phone and tablet.

Not really tried,(arm still won't Cooperate), but I do have the apps (android)

I do all my cgi on a laptop. An 8 year old Viao. I don't have a desk top machine. I do beta testing, modeling, texturing ... the whole 9 yards.

Content Advisory! This message contains profanity

I take it you can still game on one that doesn't say gaming just the graphics are not as good ?

Eventually will ever thing even towers be touch screen ?

I hear you about the noise .I don't like blinking lights either.

This may not be doable but when I was at the tower station I was going to use the laptop or tablet or notebook as a tower and plug the 24 inch monitor and the full size for towers mouse and Wacom in to the laptop or tablet or notebook .So can you use the laptop or tablet or notebook as a tower ?

PC prices are more practical n PCs are more powerful every time I need a new one. My first PC was around $4000.00. win93 or 95 Had 32 MB RAM .3D card had 4 MB RAM.one CPU. Needless to say 3D app's crashed n froze a lot. Frake the good old days.

The Tower I'm replacing was a $1000.00 4 CPUs n 8GB RAM. The only app that ever had problems was my fault in zBrush when I raze the polycount to high.

On my current tower I can't render with cycles like render engines in one app n modeled in another app with out problems.

With store renders I half to use cycles like render engines. I can't tie up the PC all day for renders either.

I need suggestions for a solution .So I can render and model ? also :)

Plugging the laptop into a physically larger monitor, and using a regular mouse, are both excellent strategies when you're home at the desk. It's much easier to see what you're doing modeling, scene setup, etc.

But for rendering, the heat dissipation limitations of a laptop chassis can't be avoided.

Perhaps a solution for you would be to get a render slave (blade or tower), so that you could do all the setup on the laptop, then send the render to the remote (aka render slave). If you choose to do that, I recommend buying used enterprise gear instead of buying a new Wal-Mart special.

Get something with two HyperThreaded hex-core processors, and enough RAM to support your rendering habits. Dual X5650 Xeons Dual X5650 processors will give you twenty four render threads.

gonna note on the above from me..

I don't think at this time, my phone or tablet can replace my desktop for making 3d models. but I spend most of the week away from home working with only my tablet and phone to work with.. so I've been looking into using them for more than just Netflix etc of an evening..

These are all ,I think it will work. But if you have at least minimum specs think it will work. Not that I would suggest running minimum specs.

I looked at a lot of app's n games specs. I'll not post 3 pages of them but here's Posers.

I don't know about Poser but I'd be aware if you need a 3 button mouse or not.

none of those will run on my stuff ;) Android only...

but I have a pair of Design apps (vector), a decent paint program that supports PSD and a modeling app, that will export to OBJ.

and, if your brave enough, the new Sketchup Free is a HTML5 app that can be run on any webbrowser... (have run it on both my phone and tablet...)

I use a Dell xps27 as my main machine. This is an all-in-one, so the components are the same as laptops. It's got a 27inch touch screen, but I don't use it as such very often. I just find that it's more convenient using a mouse.(It has an i7 4770S quad core processor and a NVidia GeForce GT750M graphics card). It renders poser fine. I've also got an alienware 17inch laptop. This has a more powerful graphics card (980M, 8gb) but I find the smaller screen means I don't use it as much. The poser ui scaling sort of works but sometimes I find bits I can't read. (the laptop has a 4k screen, the xps a QHD (2k) screen). In general you get more bang for the buck from desktops, so if you have space this is still probably the way to go. (I've just had my i9 machine delivered but haven't set it up yet but expect it to be significantly faster rendering.)

Sketchup looks killer for structures.

I'm going this week to get a tower. The dude that use to build my towers has become Houdini. I got some kin that works at staples .A stock dell or what ever probably not the best idea but can't find anyone I trust to build me a tower.

Any gaming PC will run all are 2D ,3D software with out question right ? Like this funny looking CyberPower or did I miss something ? It's still a complete tower just a compacted one right ?

So if you tryed to run all our 2D ,3D software on this very small DELL it just wouldn't ,right ?

What happens if we run all our 2D ,3D software on Intel® HD Graphics ?
