Subject: Poser Sale Immigrant

I just wrote a long thread and the forum glitched on it 😡

So now the short version. Been 6+ years, but the sale enticed me. I want to try the toon shader!

A few quick question, if you have a sec:

  1. Is the Genesis integration still Janky? If so, I won't bother with it and focus on V4/A4/A3.

  2. Is there a good video turorial on Clothes fitting. I've got a lot of clothes for Genesis/G2F/G3F that I would love to use in Poser on V4/A4/A3

  3. Is there a good video tutorial on the Toon Stuff? I saw this, just making sure there is not better? http://www.jurn.org/dazposer/?p=5347

I will read the doco, but I prefer the movie to the novel, if you get my drift! 😄

Ok, this is what I have so far for you ...

  1. For me yes ... the genesis figures are too Janky, but others may disagree. It slows things down on my system. I use Vicki 4 .

I had been assigned to make a webinar on the hair-room ... had 3/4 of it done, but couldn't get the key streaming software to work and it was scrapped. Much of the same dynamics is applied to the cloth room which was going to be my next project had the first one come to light. So ... I had done research on that as well. there are several resources for the cloth room.

  • From 3dcontent: Poser Tutorials For your question on the cloth room this is pretty comprehensive.

Now ... as for the clothing ... if you have the pro version of Poser 11, then you would need to bring the clothes into the fitting room to adjust and create new clothes from the genesis clothing. Not easy, but if you are experienced in the fitting room probably not too hard, though time consuming.

I hope this helps. NOW for the comic styles ... just jump in and ask me any questions. I've been working with the comic renders for over 2 years now and am pretty pleased with them.

Nice thanks for the reply! I will definitely be asking more questions on the last. Some good looks there!

I am stuck on some installer failures, so I am not using it yet, but I got a support ticket in and a SM Forum post (seems I'm not the only one having trouble), and hope it resolves soon! 😀

If you use the FBX export format, you can surely get content into Poser without intermediary converting.

Boni, what was your technique for the third picture? I love the look.

Boni ( ) posted Tue, 19 December 2017 at 6:07 AM

The third picture was "smooth color", "color comic", and I tweaked the dial to around .7. Keep in mind a key factor is how you use lighting. You lose color in clothing with low lighting. I don't recall, but it looks like I had a high infinite light on this one.

Boni, I think I'm missing something obvious. I assume "color comic" refers to the color option for the comic book filter, but what do you mean by "smooth color"?

Boni ( ) posted Wed, 20 December 2017 at 6:19 AM

Not everyone might be aware of this .... in the document window starting in PP2014/P10 you can right click and have a menu. At the bottom of the menu is cartoon settings ... and from there is more settings than just using the icon at the bottom of the document frame. The names were miss-quoted as I didn't have Poser up at the time. "Smooth toned" is what I meant.

Sometimes you need to edit the image in PS ... but still, it's got some pretty good quality at first render. (the neck issue is a mat file thing with the MFD)

Boni, thanks! I need to experiment more with the tone settings.

I have a vague memory that there is a solution for the MFD problem. Maybe setting it to cast no shadows? I'll take a look when I'm on my main computer.

willshetterly ( ) posted Wed, 20 December 2017 at 12:40 PM

Boni, my apologies. I played a little bit with my MFD and failed to find the reason the translucency is working for me now. If I come across the problem again. I'll share the solution here.

willshetterly ( ) posted Wed, 20 December 2017 at 12:46 PM

Experimented with it some more. It seems like some mats work with the MFD and some don't. Is this a case of Poser 11 being incompatible with some older mats?

@3doutlaw: Regarding using Genesis in Poser, I found it easier to export Genesis out of DAZ so that I could bring the figure into Poser without the need for DSON. Netherworks' Creator's Toy Box has some tools to help clean up the Genesis CR2 for use in Poser. I did the same for clothes and hair so that I could also convert some items for V4 or M4, using Wardrobe Wizard. You'd need the Genesis support files for WW as well as for V4/M4 for that, of course.

I don't even have DSON installed in Poser since I wanted to avoid the slowdowns I'd heard about. I'm using Poser Pro 11.

TOOLS: MacBook Pro; Poser Pro 11; Cheetah3D; Photoshop CC

FIGURES: S-16 (improved V4 by Karina), M4, K4, Mavka, Toons, and Nursoda's people

GOALS: Stylized and non-photorealistic renders in various fantasy styles

3doutlaw ( ) posted Thu, 21 December 2017 at 9:58 AM

@perpetualrevision - OK, so you exported a CR2? I'll give that a try, and see how it works, thanks!

@Boni - Thanks for that screenshot! Just seeing that I could change the Library to have a details pane, etc was a huge timesaver, lol! Someone should make a Poser for DS users tutorial/steps, that would point out how you can setup Poser more similar to DS so that the learning curve is less. Maybe I'll start taking notes and do it ;-)

Do you know of good toon resources (like textures and skins) that people have made or for sale, that are recommended? I am going more for the classic toon look, like THIS, but more cell-shaded (multiple tones).

It looks like my old Shaderworks Figure Manager won't work anymore, and he is out of the business 😢 Will keep playing and if things look promising I may go in for the scene toy pro product.

whbos ( ) posted Mon, 22 January 2018 at 4:05 PM

I have discovered converting Genesis figures to Poser without the need for the DSON converter is not always reliable even when having Poser create the geometry. I've gone back to use what I thought were converted models only to find they didn't work. Some do and some don't. There's also a lot of work that has to be done manually in the CR2 files. I've tried some of the conversion Python programs and they don't always clean up all of the junk.

I gave up on Genesis and only use the Mil4 characters. They're easier to work with and I don't like DSON loaded with Poser because it causes instability issues. Poser hates DSON and so do I.

It took me about 3-4 days to realize I can't go back. I consider it a donation to Smith Micro and the art form! 😁
