Subject: CONGRATS on yet another fugly design update

maneki_neko ( ) posted Wed, 11 April 2018 at 5:05 PM · edited Tue, 19 November 2024 at 7:23 PM

when you think a site - since we're here, let's talk about rendo, however it's a very spread plague all over the net - can't get uglier or less practical in terms of design or user-friendliness, bam! you get smothered over the head with yet another catastrophic site update.

no idea why you just committed this horrible, sinful sordid.. thing, i have no words for that, but it's an eyesore. while it's in a way lucky because we might still find what we're looking for thanks to that, it's even mixed with the old design, and let me tell you that it's not a success. both components don't match nor fit. this design is fugly, some menus give me headache with their whiteness, and of course, again we're gonna waste time searching for things we can't find any more. since my interaction here is minimal (and messing up the UI WON'T encourage me to increase it!), i will probably suffer a lot less than people who frequently wander all over the site, have galleries and use many features - my feelings go out to them.

i'm sure that a huge load of ideas and requests from user have NOT been implemented, but useless unasked for ones have. as always during this type of updates everywhere.

like two things i bitterly hope for (i even wrote a post for the 2nd):

  • a better box/tick system to filter items in the store
  • a wishlist total that adapts to the filtering by sale or vendor

i knew that in the times of our great-grand-parents or something, they used to give away toys and stuff in packages of crisps or washing powder. it seems today they give away design/UI programmer diplomas in packages of.. probably coffee i'd say? ?

I can never figure out why this endless need to change things ? It seems to be a change purely for the sake of change..never mind actually IMPROVING functionality? It's like the sort of thing that happens in an office/govt environment..someone new takes over a position and the very first thing they do is to re-arrange all the proceedures..purely to put their stamp on things to "justify" their elevation to the job :( This change seems to fall into that category..change purely for the sake of things :( Has it actually IMPROVED things..finding anything now seems actually SLOWER than previously ?

One thing I have noticed, that I forgot to mention in my earlier post. I no longer seem to be even able to ACCESS Renderosity through the microsoft Edge browser. I tried for several days now..and all I seem to do is sit and stare at a blank white screen for minutes at a time :( The Firefox browser seems to work. but slowly

well i guess somewhere the point of any site updating its UI is some kind of technical improvement, or the wish to appear more trendy, or both. the problem is, the bigger and complex the site is, the crazier the work load and intrications are. you can't just meddle a bit here and there, otherwise you get a pathetic patchwork where the parts don't work together properly any more, and/or it looks like crap. and if you overhaul the whole thing in one go, even if you manage a feat about the design, there's no guarantee everything will work and there will be bugs up to total failure of the functionality.

_while i can't comment about technical modifications because i have no clue - save for the fact that they need to be tested, tested, and tested again maybe, which i wonder if it is really done enough, i can have an opinion about design generally, also user friendliness.

not sure if it's related to bootstrap (know the name, but not really what it is) or some other recent-ish trend in dynamic webdesign/programming, but since maybe 2010, a ton of sites have totally changed their look and UI for this whitish eye-blending backgrounds, sterile designs, meek colors like grey, middle blue (yup, the new color of the search button!) and general boring vibe. not to mention more icons for social media (and their f*ing trackbacks!) that my blocker can store, and so many ads that i would just stop surfing the net if there weren't any ad/content blockers. i have loathed pretty much every total site overhaul on my fav sites, not because i can't adapt to change, but because the change.. made all sites alike, and not in a good way. also, i don't give a rat's ass about what appears to be trendy design-wise. if a site's owner modifies a good looking & working site just to mimic new trends, i'm sorry for them and their lack of confidence in their brand and products. you can't fake quality and efficiency with new looks, either you already rock with what you offer.. or you suck anyways.

what i'm trying to say is that webdesign is an art, and if you can't produce anything pleasant to look at, FORGET IT, go work in a bank or a diner._

now here, no idea what triggered this change nor what its point is - but besides those horrible unpractical horizontal white-greyish/blue navigation menus that spring out of top nav originally meant to trigger vertical menus, the colors don't fit (the black is too harsh, the blue reminds of windows 50 years ago, there are random patches of almost similar green for feedback, deals, thread, search = wtf), you have all kind of shapes for the new elements... and i notice top icons missing, i don't remember which, but there were more i'm sure (which means more clicking to find the equivalent through a menu). all in all, without going more into details, looking at it is just eeeew. an unpleasant, annoying, bothersome, grating experience. the old version up to a few days ago was way better.

@maneki_neko: Bootstrap is a Javascript library. Right now, Renderosity is not using it. Many sites are redesigned because an increasingly large percentage of web traffic is moving to mobile devices, and making a site mobile-friendly imposes new demands and limitations on web design.

yup. true.

exxxxcept..... how many copies of Daz Studio and Poser, 3DStudio Max etc run on mobile devices? I get they want to make it mobile friendly in some aspects but... since th core user base ain't on mobiles..... I wonder about the logic...?

oh and on a mobile device - upto date chrome running on a S8+ this update still has MAJOR issues. I suppose it was designed for an ipad rather than everyone...

Torquinox ( ) posted Sun, 15 April 2018 at 11:01 AM

I don't use Chrome or an Ipad. Staff says the new design is in progress. Give them time, we'll see.

Khai-J-Bach ( ) posted Sun, 15 April 2018 at 12:40 PM

they've said it's in progress since the last update... so... 3 years now...?

Torquinox ( ) posted Sun, 15 April 2018 at 5:47 PM

Could be. This update is disappointing.

thx for the info on bootstrap.

just for teh fun, i looked at the site here on my smartphone (i don't do it often, because if i want to download sth, i need my pc anyways), and i can't compare with before just like this, i'm oblivious to details like that. but having to scroll down a bazillion times because every thumbnail in shop & freebies is enormous pisses me off, same for this new navigation where the menus never end, in 3 irritating colors to boot. i could bet it was better before, somehow i wasn't so annoyed last time i checked rendo from my phone ~ i could try from my tablet but what's the point. same shit in bigger.. why do designers insist on making sites that cater to all devices simultaneously, instead of offering different separate versions, i.e. mobile OR desktop, optimized for their needs instead of half-assed mixes optimized for everything but working for none?

@maneki_neko: I recently used the last version of the site on both a phone and tablet. Phone was not great. Tablet was OK, but PC is the best way to visit this site. New version, the home page works better on a phone than old version. Marketplace pages are the same. I don't think the catalog pages were updated or changed. Money is the reason why. It's expensive to design and maintain two different versions of a site. To save money, many designers start with a template and adjust the template to fit phone, tablet and desktop formats. A good design can work well across platforms, but good design also costs more.

maneki_neko ( ) posted Mon, 16 April 2018 at 7:22 AM

@Torquinox: so in a way, you save money with bad cheap design, while scaring away some customers who can't be bothered with exactly this design or your annoying updates in general, hence you lose money there. hmm... i wonder how this translates in a business graphic ?

probably still a win otherwise they wouldn't do it i guess.

ok, enough on this one - i've said my piece, no regrets, but i don't really wanna go on for days about websites in general or this here/rendo in particular, shit happens and that's it. it's not like i can change things, and i have no other choice than putting up with it, so... i ranted, me and y'all commented, i think we've made the round ^^
