Poser - OFFICIAL F.A.Q (Last Updated: 2024 Nov 01 10:58 pm)
I want to put all my Godin V4 characters in one runtime, to better organize my Poser items runtime. I have no problems in the first step, but then I get asked if I want to copy a set of other files, they can be replaced, or not, or I can choose to save them with what is previously there. Could someone explain what is going on here and what I need to do to save the entire set of figures I have. Thanks.
Ok, what's probably happening is that the characters have common files that they use. Content creators often do this. The character files, usually pz2 files in the pose menu for these type of v4 based characters, are only the tip of the iceberg and there will be other files that support them. The content creator will not make new different files for example for blue eye textures each time. While some put each characters files in different named folders other simply use a common named folder, such as FredBloggs/eye textures.
So that every character works, these common files are included with all figures. So when you copy a second runtime into the first your operating system ( Windows or Mac) will detect the files are already there and give you the options.
It doesn't really matter whether you skip or overwrite these files, I usually overwrite if I'm installing a more recent runtime in case there have been any minor updates. I wouldn't recommend keeping both files in the runtime as this will only bloat it for no benefit.

Thanks, so much. That is really helpful. I will remember that now for my runtime building. I was uncertain about what was the best thing to do.
I am using Poser 11. Is it possible to use Genesis, Genesis 2, and Genesis 3, characters in PP11? I have read about this and believe this can be done, but not for Genesis 8 characters. Please correct me if I am wrong on this.
More important perhaps is that I want to know if these Genesis characters and items can be stored somewhere in PP11 if you do not use DAZ Studio.
If this can be done, could someone please instruct me on how to do this. And please assume I know nothing about this because I need small steps to understand it.
If there are other links that explain this please direct me to them.
Thanks so much. Randy
Hello, Brand new here and to Poser 11. I am the beginner of beginners let's say.
I got this program for the purpose of recreating autopsy/crime scene photos for trial purposes. Some questions I have to get me started: Say I see a clothing item that one figure is wearing, but have a different figure chosen (ie. Alyson figure, but Pauline's skirt) is there a way to morph clothes to fit figures they were not meant for? As of now, if I put a different shirt on "Alyson" it doesn't fit right.
Also, as I stated before, this is for trial purposes and I will have to show injuries on the figure, how (or can) I go about putting bruises or possibly cuts on the figure?
If you have any other information on how to get started, that would be fantastic. Thank you.
To put conforming clothing on a different figure, you need to convert it. Probably the easiest way is to use wardrobe wizard. It supports all the figures that come with poser. Support for other figures can be gotten at philc.net.
To add wounds, you'll need a 2d program (photoshop, gimp, paintshop pro, etc) and a picture of the wound. There are wound images available for sale in the marketplace. The step by step will vary depending on your software. Basically, you open the texture map of the figure in your 2d program and open the wound image. Copy the wound to a new layer on the texture map and resize it to fit the injured area.

hi there. i'm a newbie...
i am using Poser Pro 11, on a windows 10 system. i have read through all sixteen crazy and amazingly helpful posts on this thread... (you guys are awesome for sharing your knowledge, my gods, the things i learned just skimming - !)
i'm a fan of lululee, merchant here with sexy 2nd skins. same with Darkworld's lovely skins. but i can't get them to work in my setup. i made sure i have the latest download manager from smith micro, restarted computer as suggested, then loaded up poser. i have it so a default bikini-clad fully injected V4 comes up when i start my program. i tried to put lululee's denim corset on her and hurrah, that worked...but then i opened up a custom character based off of FRAD Macha from rosity here, and it won't take the corset. nothing happens except the 'busy' cursor/mouse icon. i have my girl selected. she's completely nude. in the preview pane, no corset. in the render, no corset. i had this problem a version or two ago and i would actually have to load up Poser 9, put the second skin on, save, then load it in whatever the poser was that i was using and then render it and it would work. but i don't have a second poser program installed right now and frankly i don't want one. i want to figure this out. i know there's a fix. some little thing i'm doing wrong. i've tried a few python scripts. lots of the links in the previous posts here are outdated and broken (i miss RDNA, so much...) it doesn't make sense. a mostly nude untextured V4.2 or whatever takes the 2nd skin corset - but my lovely avatar does not?
also - i tried an experiment just now. opened a New document so that the bikini vicky came in, then i imported MY girl into the same scene. and the corset loads onto her - what the fel?? what is off in my settings or whatever? i really haven't fooled around a lot so i don't think i did some wacky thing while messing about. i tend to point and click.
experience wise, i am completely ignorant about nodes, doing more than changing colours of materials, the math stuff in this program, etc. i just make things look as purty as i can, so go gently with advice =/
I waited a while in case anyone with a real answer came forward first, since they didn't here are a couple of suggestions. As far as I remember many lululee products need a python plugin to work, I think it's called supershaders or something. (If you go to the product page here it should tell you exactly what it is, or look in the product readme.) This used to be free at RDNA, think it was transferred to DAZ. Have you installed this? Not sure why the sexyskins would work on some v4's and not others, if you haven't installed but who knows. Was your v4 bikini default scene originally created with your poser 9? I'm wondering if it brings something into the scene that is needed but missing when you open a new scene in p11
The little spinning wheel often comes up when poser is looking for a file. Depending on your settings and size of runtimes it can take a long time for poser to either find it or give up. Try setting the search to shallow or off in general preference (edit menu, general preferences, library) Then if poser can't find a file it needs you will get the search window appear much quicker to give you a clue what's wrong.
Another spinning wheel problem I've had in the past is when for some reason poser has problems opening a pop up window to report a problem, this could be related to the supershader issue.

thank you for responding. no, the bikini v4 is one i made, as in i deleted that dummy one that came with poser, popped in v4.2 i think, loaded up all her INJs, then saved it as my preferred state for when poser opens. i know now that i can just click New and have her come up for a new document window, then import whatever figure i want to have using the secondskin texture, apply it, delete the v4 and save the newly painted on character to be imported into a previous scene at a later date. so i don't think it's the figure. it has to be something with that default setting though. i do not have the fading background or default lights on my preferred state. i just can't think of what it could be and i honestly don't know where to look to compare.
basically i have a work-around but i'd rather not have to do all that. i know the shaders you're talking about. i'[ll see what her page says.
here's the product page of the item in question - https://www.renderosity.com/mod/bcs/?ViewProduct=97608 - for her denim one, which i have tried to use previously, it says it's daz studio only. this one though is for poser people, she says she doesn't offer support for daz users. she does have this in the required section:
Semideu FREE Plugin
if we need to take our chat off to DM just give me a poke. i don't want to hog up the thread - but i also bet i'm not the only one who's trying to figure this out or something similar ;) i'm weird but i'm not THAT weird!
**also, they don't seem to be available at daz either. i've got some script in my poser menus already, with the info Shaderworks>Advanced Shaders> and then some more options. i am really not sure what to do next with a script. does it play itself, do i need to click something?
If the script is installed in your poser menu it will run automatically for things designed to use it. I've never looked into it in detail, just had it installed for products that use it. I'm afraid I can't be of much help, I tried loading a v4, adding a lululee sexyskin, then loading an v4 and adding a sexyskin to this and all worked fine. I'll admit I'm a bit of a defeatist when it comes to poser problems, if at first I don't succeed, well there is usually a work around! Sorry . John
Hi - despite having used Poser for nearly a year now and having learned stacks of skills and techniques, I still consider myself a newbie - especially when I see the kind of questions all over these forums! Most of it goes straight over my head :o
So, a couple of character/pose questions if I may:
I'm using Poser 11 (not Pro) and am working with V4 models with the Morph++ packs.
When I create a character, I try to think of the morphs/dials in 3 categories: i) 'Character Base dials' for defining the basic person - facial features, muscle, body/limb length and scales etc. etc. ii) Pose dials' - for limb / hands positions, facial expressions during a story etc. iii) 'Combi dials' - such as brow height, muscle flex - Pose dials that may have a 'non-zero' default position (such as a brow-squeeze or high eyebrow - so they can still be used for expressions but don't 'reset to zero' when the pose or expression is finished)
I generally keep a written note of all of the Character Base and Combi dials so that I can reset the character (particularly useful if they've been doing something that involves a lot of dramatic posing or facial expressions!). Alternatively, I could just load the original character from the library again.
Is there a way to create or set a 'Master Setting' dial to return ALL of the dials to a character default so I don't have to dials everything back to neutral?
Also, related to this, when I load a pose from my saved poses library, if my character already has raised arms for example (i.e. ArmsUp-Down or ArmFrontBack etc.) then it will keep this setting and ADD the posed setting to it - in other words, the new pose adds its own values and I often get massively weird arm-positions. The only way out of this is if I reset my character to a 'V4 Neutral' pose before I load the library pose. Is there a better way of doing this or, better still, a better way of saving poses in the first place?
Sorry if I'm being a bit daft here but it's what us noobs do... :) :)
Thanks for your help!

Not sure if you got your answer already .. but there are some tricks depending of what you need:
when I load a pose from my saved poses library, if my character already has raised arms for example (i.e. ArmsUp-Down or ArmFrontBack etc.) then it will keep this setting and ADD the posed setting to it
if you save a pose don't forget to uncheck both Morph channels + Body transformation in the pop-up screen to avoid saving any body morphs and you will save pose only .. :)

Genesis yes .. Genesis 2 yes with DSON .. Genesis 3 maybe with DSON as well [I never tried] .. Genesis 8 there's a tutorial how to here somewhere at Renderosity

is there a way to morph clothes to fit figures they were not meant for? As of now, if I put a different shirt on "Alyson" it doesn't fit right. select the loaded outfit and go to the properties tab .. there is a row saying:
You can try to check those when conforming to your figure to see if it has an effect .. many times you only have to dial a little to make it 'look' as it fits ;)
how (or can) I go about putting bruises or possibly cuts on the figure?
you can create bruises and cuts by create a new skin in f.e. Photoshop .. maybe a great idea for me to make a bruised and cuts pack product for store ..
Did you the Python work for you yet ??
I did know how it worked but did not use it till last week for a different product .. I did get an error but will try to figure out to make it work .. if I succeed I will let you know how to .. unless you figured it out already I would love to know how you did ..

Not sure if you got your answer already .. but there are some tricks depending of what you need:
- top menu > figure > zero figure or restore figure .. that will zero morphs + pose dials of the complete figure and put also back in base place/zero possition
- zero partial dials : select the part first [f.e. head] > top menu > zero object
- you can save a zero base to pose runtime folder
when I load a pose from my saved poses library, if my character already has raised arms for example (i.e. ArmsUp-Down or ArmFrontBack etc.) then it will keep this setting and ADD the posed setting to it
if you save a pose don't forget to uncheck both Morph channels + Body transformation in the pop-up screen to avoid saving any body morphs and you will save pose only .. :)
Thanks! I appreciate your help. I'm just about getting to grips with the settings now :)

The fitting room means everyone can use V4 (or G3 or G8) clothes and shoes. With a little fiddling, you can conform V4 clothes to Evolution, Pauline, Raffaella, and Elizabeth 2. I still use Sasha frequently for my V4 needs. I am happy.
Imagine my drop from joy to disappointment on realising that the Fitting Room is only available in Poser 11 Pro!!
I guess I could upgrade but that seems a bit OTT. Can I commission someone who has Poser 11 Pro to do a V3 to V4 refit for me?
I'm serious - I'd be happy to pay for your time! The prop is a simple mini-leotard I want to use as part of a cosplay outfit (the rest of which is already in V4).

AFAIK standard Poser 11 has cloth and bullet physics... if it's a simple leotard why not just set it up as dynamic? The results can potentially be far better than with a conforming item.
Hi All, I appreciate this thread to float my question for help.
I am an experienced photo-artist but fairly new to Poser. I have a LaFemme character that is posed and lit. I wanted her to have a very short hair style – almost a "buzz cut." I've tried hair as props with polygons (can't find one short enough) and spent days trying strand based hair with multiple groups to cover the head (won't behave, has bald spots and too complicated for my skills.) I even tried starting with the skull caps in the Poser library but they won't conform to the LaFemme character.
After spending a week on the hair I need to find another solution. Is there a tutorial that focuses on short hair? I am open to any viable path including just paying someone to finish it! (I have a 2D sample image I am trying to match)
Thx
There's a hair called hmann-m-gi joe that might work for you that came with poser, though I don't know if it's still included. It's a buzz cut like style. It's for Don but you can use the morph brush to fit it to Lafemme. Otherwise, post your sample and someone might know of where you can get what you need. There are a few great hair creators here.

Thank you both (RedPhantom & Nails60) for your input. I wasn't able to locate the "hmann-m-gi joe" hair in the Poser 11 library but you both mentioned something I hadn't thought of. I've used the morph brush on figures but hadn't thought of using it on hair.
I also found the runtime files for 3Dream Boy Hair and it looks perfect! I'm going to see if I can morph it to LaFemme tonight.
Thanks again!
Ok, so this is going to seem a really ridiculous question, but I found my old Poser 4 and installed it. It works but all of my old content - morphs, models, textures, etc - were on my old computer that my ex wife got rid of after my divorce (I digress). I’m also struggling with the fact that I’ve forgotten what I used to know when using this in 2002-2004. First, is there some place where I am able to get the stuff that will work with Poser 4? I’m not a graphics guy or a game guy, but use it to create images for placing in my own pen and paper RPG materials. I think Poser 4 will suit me for this without going into new versions. some of the stuff I created in 2004 was with morals and the freak and m3 (I think). ```
I want to change the hierarchy of figures including the root. Almost always "hip". I want to be able to change the root to either hand, either foot, head... etc. so they will animate much better. (Picked up by foot or hanging onto rope etc.) There MUST be a way to do this. I've been looking around for years and have never found out how. So I'm asking you folks. Thanks.

No instancing in poser I'm afraid. :( Much needed though.

Hello. I'm a new user of Poser 11. Recently I learned how to create a skydome using 3rd party addons like EZDome. But what do I do when the 'ground' of the skydome isn't on level with the default level of the Ground? For example, I set up an urban night scene (using a skydome) but the street level is much lower than the default ground level. The other question is how can I create an invisible floor just to simulate the subject's shadow? The subject is in a skydome so the HDRI is actually wrapped along the interior of the the dome.

If you're using EZDome, it has an option to add a shadow catcher (your invisible floor) to the scene for you.

The 2016 YouTube video for using Substance Painter with Poser 11 is gone. So I have to ask: can I easily export a custom designed figure into Substance Painter? Can those new materials be imported back into Poser 11 Pro?
Substance Painter will work with basically any 3d object that you have a UV mapped OBJ file for. So you don't really have to export anything from Poser, just use the obj file Poser loads and go from there. If there is some reason you want to use, say a heavily morphed figure, you will want to export an OBJ thou.
Open Substance, go to new, select the obj file, choose which type of normals map you want in the project and optionally import any textures you want to use.
When you have it painted, or want to test it in Poser, export the textures to wherever you want them to be, open up Poser and set it up. Substance does have an option to export material settings, but I don't use that. It doesn't take long to set up the materials in Poser using PBR maps.
Everything in this scene except the hair (dynamic) and the background was painted in Substance Painter.
Some things are easy to explain, other things are not........ <- Store -> <-Freebies->

I've been using EZDome since you released it and I never knew that was an option. lol

If I wanted to make La Femme's shoulder muscles bigger should I use a magnet or the morph tool? I do not want to widen her shoulders. This is not for animation purposes.
You will probably find it easier to use the morph tool rather than magnets. Create a new morph named "Muscles Bigger" or whatever. Do one arm, and then mirror the morph to the other side.

It also helps to set the brush magnitude very low (say .02). This will make softer changes and will be easier to control.

Thanks Nails60. I will try this as soon as I get back to my Poser PC. Thanks also for your patience with newbies. Of course a lot of the stuff I need to know is pretty basic and one could be forgiven for expecting newbies to work this stuff out for themselves with the numerous basic tutorials on Youtube. However, that's all well and good if you know the terminology for what you need to work out. Sometimes I don't even know what a thing is called, never mind how to make the first thing do another thing - try asking THAT to Google :)
I've had my head so far inside Poser, I've worked out some pretty advanced stuff in the Materials room just by experimenting for hours on end. Then, I come back to the Pose view and struggle to rotate a camera. Always a million things to learn...
Anyway - I will post future Q's in the New Users section as you suggest - I just thought I'd express my appreciation for your help.
