The current game level/cut scene contest here, back to the Age of Sail ... ⚓

diomede ( ) posted Mon, 23 July 2018 at 8:11 PM

Come to think of it, I modeled and rigged an old man and a boy for a fake game called "Get off My Lawn!" They are based on Dennis and his neighbor Mr. Wilson. Rendered some fake screengrabs. Maybe I should try my hand at animating the figures for the contest. Do the contest evaluators ever say anything more severe than "Hell no!"?

Today I am going to work on a project for the Carrara Monthly Challenge over at that other forum. Well, after I have an appointment.

Thanks, Ashleyvs. Always appreciate encouragement.
Today, I think I am going to revise the rigging of some of my custom figures.

Some very experienced software developer incorrectly stated that a Carrara rigged figure cannot have two actions at the same time. Turns out that a Carrara-rigged figure can have dozens of NLA tracks applied simultaneously, maybe even hundreds, but must pay attention to order of preference if actions for the same joint or morph are stacked. Hey, we are all wrong sometimes. But then I found out that this person does not have Carrara installed and does not currently use Carrara (if the user's posts are to b believed). Pretty rude and obnoxious to frequent a forum for software not installed and not used, and then knowingly make false assertions. Wasted a lot of my time.

I am working on 2 articles: Daz Studio as Carrara replacement, and Blender as Carrara replacement. Stay tuned.

diomede ( ) posted Tue, 14 August 2018 at 8:45 AM

I am working on the renderosity animation challenge. Originally, I wasn't going to because Dr. Bernie told us that Carrara couldn't have a figure do two things at once. He even had a thread with a title saying Carrara could not have M4 walk and chew gum. Turns out Carrara can have dozens of simultaneous NLA tracks applied to the same figure. But, Dr. Bernie was just spreading misinformation. It really wasted a lot of my time. Oh, he often backtracks and amends his statement, but that doesn't restore my lost time.

dr_bernie ( ) posted Tue, 14 August 2018 at 12:21 PM

Oh shush. Do you even know what 'Walking and chewing gum' means? It means someone has difficulties performing basic everyday tasks.

I will be modeling some props for my entry in the Carrara challenge at that other forum. Must use one of the DCG plugins that Eric generously made free and open source. Theme is Frontier.

diomede ( ) posted Fri, 31 August 2018 at 5:20 PM

Ended up working mostly on terrain with the intent of using the plugin that creates shore lines where water meets terrain. Great concept.

diomede ( ) posted Mon, 03 September 2018 at 10:36 AM

Completed the terrain, but instead converted it so it could be used with the Fluidos plugin. To use a terrain with Fluidos, it must be an enclosed object, not just a single facing sheet. I used the zero edge filter with a setting of 80 to get the narrowest and steepest edges, converted to a vertex object, and then enclosed the bottom with the fill command. I then tessalated the bottom. Could just select the top and add thickness, but that increases poly count compared to selecting and filling the bottom.

Today...using CG to create "plans" for a wooden storage cabinet.

One thing I find with making furniture is that some tools are in imperial, but I also work in metric, so way to easy to convert things wrong. Which is where C5 comes in, it allows me to create a part in inches then change the measurement to CM.

Also by being able to visualise things before getting hands on, I can see straight away that things are the right size, or that it will fit. Thus - hopefully -less wasted wood.

In theory having accurate plans should allow the use of accurate tools, such as digital calipers. I've already made a router jig/sled (using shelf uprights) with a value of 90.002, aka 1/4 of 1 mm out on the vertical. But one day I'd like to reach the bronze standard of many colleges/contests. Where every joint can have a maximum variance of 1/16th of a inch (1.5mm).

Been out of circulation for a couple of years dealin with real world stuff and a lost muse, and I'm really bad out of practice. When I picked up the loose ends to get started again, I re-discovered a folder with about 30 unfinished images. So I decided to finish most of them as a kinda warm jump start LOL! But I may not be able to finish them all: I got a couple of new ideas just from working, plus a couple more from a couple of Rendo friends. Good times again!
