I watched the trailer and a few minutes of the movie on Netflix. It just blows my mind away that it was made entirely in Blender. I wonder what computers they were using to be able to render all that. It's digital magic in my book.
edit: I was just reading the forums over at Blenderartists.org - The Blender they used wasn't out-of-the-box Blender. They custom built some features to make it able to work for a full feature film. They also used Substance Painter, Photoshop, Houdini and Fume FX. Still, to use Blender instead of Maya is amazing.

Yes they mentioned that they customized Blender some for this but that is another part that makes Blender so Powerful as an open source software there have been many mini movie projects done with Blender but this one by Netflix is the second one done by a studio the first was that I remember was The Man in the High Castle the opening scene credits were also full done in Blender. This does show that Blender can compete with the big guns like Maya 3Ds Max and others

Watching the movie makes me want to pick Blender back up and do something. I'd have to relearn everything. Way back when before I joined Rendo I made chat rooms and stuff for IMVU with Blender, my stuff is probably still in their catalog. I guess Blender has come a long way since then. I think I'll download the latest version and see what it looks like now.

Well we have a great Blender forum here but you might also want to take a look on Youtube for some of the info on the up coming 2.8 release of Blender which will have a new UI and even more features like EEVEE' the new real time rendering engine also Cycles render engine is compatible with Poser's Superfly render engine which is actually Cycles with a few Poser's proprietary additions to it . The new UI is suppose to be more user friendly and help minimize the learning curve

I think 2.8 is going to be a while before it arrives. Blender Internal Renderer (raster renderer) and Game Engine are both removed from 2.8.
In this forum thread I discuss the time table for 2.8 release https://www.renderosity.com/mod/forumpro/?thread_id=2925448

I think that timeline is overly optimistic. It'll be ready when it's ready.
I am sure it will change but at the time that was the most solid time line I could get from Blender developers but you are right it will be ready when it is ready

I usually do not double post but when this crossed my path and knowing that many are not familiar with what is possible with Blender the free and open source 3D modeling package
Post by Andrew Price Next Gen | Official Trailer [HD] | Netflix
The new Netflix film Next Gen went live a few hours ago, and looks like a mix between Big Hero 6 and Wall-E. But what grabbed my attention was the mention of 'Blender'. "We’re effectively 100% Blender, other than plugging in apps in a few areas to supplement departmental workflows" said the co-founder of the studio. Studios adopting Blender isn't news anymore, but the scale of this production is the largest I've seen. If Blender can handle this, there's not a lot stopping it from widespread industry adoption.
