Poser 11 / Poser Pro 11 OFFICIAL Technical F.A.Q (Last Updated: 2024 Nov 17 7:07 pm)
Welcome to the Poser Forums! Need help with these versions, advice on upgrading? Etc...you've arrived at the right place!

I, Personally, prefer Poser Pro 2014/Poser 10 to Poser 11.
Poser 11 gives us SuperFly render engine (based on the Blender Cycles.) . It is not backwards comparable with any materials you have with Poser 10. I would not recommend upgrading.
You cannot import the Genesis figure without the DSON plugin. and it doesn't work with Genesis 3 and later.
Genesis and Genesis 2 work just fine in Poser 10/2014 with DSON.

Andy!
I respect Andy's view on this ... but of course I have my own as well.
The Superfly render engine alone is a deal breaker for me. I've not used firefly since I started playing around with Superfly. Even got me to explore and learn Blender and that is a lovely side adventure. Although they haven't been emphasized Paul and Pauline are delightful figures to expand your renders.
You do need to update your material settings ... but not all of them. There are some that are perfectly compatible. You need to experiment and look at the tutorials. Let me know if you upgrade, I can hook you up with some great free and marketplace shaders.
Facial rigging is wonderful ... Paul and Pauline have it as well as the new figure everyone is talking about "Evolution One", HIGHLY recommended.
I believe with a little work and some help you can use DSON in P11/PP11 and use the free importer for the genesis 3/8 figures. I've not bothered. I'm happy with generation 4 and the new figures that have come out for P11/PP11.
No offense intended to Andy, he's a cool guy!! But on this I disagree.

One big difference for me, although it might not be important for you, is that even the non-pro version of poser 11 is 64 bit, while poser 10 is 32 bit (poser 2014pro is 64 bit). This means poser 10 was limited in the amount of ram it could access (about 3 gig I believe) so if you do large multifigure multi prop scenes in p10 you could run into memory problems, I did manage to crash p10 with a low memory warning on at least one occasion.
You can use dson with g1 and g2 figures. I've done it. I love poser 11 and dislike when I have to use 10 for anything. It's not just superfly, though I love that. It's also the measuring tool, That helps me make sure all my props are the right size and adjust the height of my figures. I like that in the hierarchy pallet, you can select a figure by clicking on the name rather than on "body." I like being able to drag and drop obj files to import them. And you can do more than one at a time. And autosave is a Godsend. Here is a comparison of the various versions https://my.smithmicro.com/Poser11andPoserPro11FeatureComparison_v6.pdf. You can see for yourself what you think will benefit you.

@donnena would would you say that Poser 10's Firefly render engine works better than the one in Poser 11? This an important issue for me. There isn't a lot of Poser specific content out there anymore and I have an extensive library of older, but still worthy figures. I'm don't want too many versions of Poser on my computer. I also have a copy of Poser Pro 2012. I guess to play nicely with Genesis I will have to have Daz Studio reinstalled as well. I was hoping that this schism wouldn't have happened; but I want to render men with body/facial hair, ect. I don't know why I've had to resort to 3rd party vendors for these items and Poser's native figures don't have those options. So Poser 10 does not have a 64 bit option? That could be problematic as well. Frankly I don't know what to do in this case. Unless I can get the Pro Version of Poser 10 at discounted price.
Poser Pro 2014 (poser 10 Pro version) is often discounted.
If you have predominately legacy content (like I do!) I wouldn't jump to Poser 11.
I wouldn't bother to install PP 2012 unless you need the serial number to upgrade to PP2014. I don't remember if it's cheaper to upgrade from PP 2012 or P10.
DSON works nicely with PP2014 and P11 but yes, in order to use DSON, you have to have DS installed and you have to install the DS version of the item to the DS library... But once you have imported it in to Poser, you can save it as Native Poser item.... There may be issues with this that I'm not remembering. (ACK!! I'm beginning to sound like a politician!! I'm sorry!) I have so much content for Mike & Vickie 4, I can't get too excited about buying new clothing for more invisible friends!
Smith Micro is a software company. They are very good at making software, but not so hot at making content for that software. My favorite of the Characters SM gives us is Andy... he's got some silly morphs and is light weight and versatile

Firefly is Firefly. Your P10 shaders will work just fine in P11 if you render using Firefly as the render engine and not Superfly.
Genesis 1 and 2 do not need DAZ Studio installed installed to use DSON. There were quite a few threads dedicated to that. I tried and it worked fine.
There are free utilities to bring in G3 that do require DS to be installed. There is an entire discussion area here dedicated to that topic.
You can always export Genesis figures and such from DAZ as FBX and it should work in Poser though I have yet to try and as I don't use Studio in the first place.
Thank you. It sounds like the biggest advantage to getting Poser 11 is the 64 bit support. Does it have more room render options too? My favorite native Poser figure is Don, he doesn't have much content. I hate using the Wardrobe Wizard. He did take M2 maps (except the eyes). Is the Fitting Room now in Poser 11 or do you still need Pro for that? Poser 5 was the last generation of Poser figures that were designed by Daz, after that things went really weird.
Forgive me, but Firefly is not Firefly. Poser 11 made changes to it. Not all legacy content works with Poser 11 Firefly. I've seen very interesting failures with characters. Poser Pro 2014 will also give you 64 bit support. There are no more FireFly render options in Poser 11 than there are in Poser 10/Poser Pro 2014 or 2012 for that matter.
There is no new content for the older Poser People in Poser 11. You do get Paul and Pauline 1 & 2, with a small amount of clothing and poses for them.

What issues have you had with firefly? I've never seen any. I've even rendered the same scene over with pp11 and didn't see any differences besides the ones I made.

yes, if the shader only uses texture maps, it will work fine.

I jumped to P11Pro upon launch and never missed P10. I used older content quite often but I have never encountered any black spaces on faces. Be sure to install EZSkin3. It cracks skin shaders to the underlying textures and builds optimized shaders for FireFly and SuperFly to choice. You will be amazed how good old content will look with better shaders, subdivision, etc.
@donnena Just because you doesn't know how to use P11 doesn't mean you need to talk other people into not buying it. It's talk like this that hurt the poser community and is not helpful in any way at all.

Thanks guys. That's good to know about Dyson, I have a lot of Daz Studio Content; I'd have to learn how to import stuff for Genesis I suppose. Actually I would like to try not to reinstall Daz Studio right now and see what I can do with Poser Pro 11--which I intend to purchase tonight before the price goes up.
One other thing to be aware of is that now both the Pro and Standard version of poser 11 use Gamma Correction. This will cause the images to look different between 10 and 11 Standard versions. Having used the Pro version for several years it becomes a mute point, but if you are not prepared it can throw you off. It could also be why some say that Firefly is different.

The link is in ghostman's posts, https://www.poserlounge.nl/PLWP/ it's not part of Renderosity. It's just a group of us who gather and talk, sometimes about 3d art sometimes about other things. But even if 3d isn't our current topic, you can always ask for help.

I haven't used Poser for a long time. I have Poser 10, but I haven't installed it on my new PC yet. Is there very much of a difference between Poser 10 and 11? I can't afford the Pro Upgrade. What are the main differences? Would you recommend the upgrade. I'm not blown away by the human figures that come with this version. Is there still a way to import the Genesis Figure into Poser natively without Daz Plugin support. I had never tried to use the Genesis figure in Poser and are the results good if I do.
