Poser - OFFICIAL F.A.Q (Last Updated: 2025 Feb 15 11:01 am)
As far as I can tell, when you create a new light, it doesn't replace the ones already there, it merely adds a new one to the collection. I'm not really clear on what youl're asking. Do you want to know how to delete a light? Click on the light you want to delete, then click on the little trash can next to the lights. That will delete the selected light. I don't think there's any way to delete all lights in one fell swoop, though. I hope this helps a bit. Melanie
Melanie, You know when you work with non-global light, like the one provide in the default light sets in your library, when you replace the lighting with another set in your library, the first set of lights go away. That's not the case with global lighting. I know how to manually delete lights, but to have to do that with 20 + light objects each time I want to switch between global & non-global lighting is a real pain. I just thought there would be an easier way to do it. I just did a little experiment and guess what? It's the same with "non-global lighting", and lighting below a certain intensity will not get replaced or moved when adding a new lighting preset. Interesting... guess I never noticed that before.
Sometimes, when I do a "Memorize all" before I start monkeying around with the lights, it will restore to what you started with. Along with the model, her hair, etc. This is especially good for poses though. I 'memorize all', choose the figure and its body along with all the other checked items, then I ty a preset pose, and I can always go back... to restore it all... works great on 'moving hair'.
thats not that big of a problem - theyre there, but they dont cast light so just ignore them. now what annoys the hell out of me, is when i load a light set that has targetted spotlights (ie: any of syyd's lights, among other vendors). it loads fine, and targets the spotlights at the character's head. however, if i change my mind and want to load a DIFFERENT light set, say one of the poser defaults or any other standard light set, then it totally screws it up because all of the lights are now 'pointing at' the character, and with omni lights this tends to make them render all black. this drives me nuts. so before i use any spotlight sets like the ones with syyds adam, i have to save the document, then if i later change my mind, and want to load a different type of light set, i can reload the document from my save. the only alternative is to go to every single light and click 'point at - none'. this can be time-consuming :)
Blackhearted, if global lights don't cast any light, then what's the point of them being there? Yes, I've had that all black effect happen, too. It's totally annoying. f you get too many lights on that sphere up there, it's murder trying to adjust the ones you want to change. There are so many of them, you can't find the one you want. I just delete each unwanted light manually. It takes some time, but eventually you clean them all out and you can start over. Melanie
"if global lights don't cast any light, then what's the point of them being there?" They do cast light when they're applied. They only stop casting light when a different light set is applied. It's like Poser decided it would turn off the lights, but leave them all there physically. Like I said before, this only seem to happen to lights below a certain intensity... say 30% or below. All the ones that are set to 100% move or gets deleted when different light setting are applied. Maybe this is a new item to add to Poser 5 wish list.
Another prob I have noted. I you load one light preset, and then change it to another, and then change it again you often end up not getting the light preset you think because some of the earlier light setting screw up the new settings. Infinity lights load as spotlights and vice versa. Restore lights does not always correct this. The only thing I have found that works is to delete all of the lights and then load the preset. Otherwise you may or may not get the light setup you wanted.

I've been playing with global lighting as I'm sure many of you have, but when you try and add other "non-global lighting", the previously applied global lights are still there. They don't seem to cast any light when you apply a different light setting, but they do get in the way of posing the "non-global lights." So how do you get rid of them once you apply them? I've even tried making a new light setting with all the lights deleted in my library, but it doesn't seem to affect the global lighting either. It's the same with the global lighting that came with the Hatchling package. No pun intended, but any light you can shed on the subject would be greatly appreciated. visualkinetics
