Subject: P11.2: Is there a Queue-only installer for remotes?

seachnasaigh ( ) posted Thu, 19 September 2019 at 9:10 PM · edited Sun, 06 October 2024 at 9:23 AM

I have multiple render slave computers (aka "remotes"). Is there a Queue-only installer for 11.2? What serial do I use? I have two P11Pro licenses and five PPro2014 Game Dev licenses. Those came with a separate serial for remotes which was only for Queue Manager.

the serial for queue manager is no longer required. there is no separate installer for it at this time.

I am not sure you that you need poser to be registered anymore on a machine which is running just the queue Manager, perhaps somebody else can clarify this?

I have twenty server blades which I use as Queue remotes for control by one of my P11Pro workstations. If installing P11.2 w/o serial works, that would still be an issue because of the massive chunk of hard drive occupied. Queue is tiny and the only other thing installed with it is the render engine. So, you don't need big hard drives, just lots of fast processor cores and plenty of RAM in the remotes.

There needs to be a way to install only Queue/FFRender64, and it needs to exactly match the P11.2 build number. Both my PPro2014 Game Dev and P11Pro are dead men walking, and therefore so is my network rendering capability. I'd be happy to help with beta testing for this.
Two of my workstations and one of my server blades are currently offline, but I still have two workstations and 19 server blades online.

Remote installs could be done with a Queue-only installer for remotes (matching the P11.2 build number), or as an option in the P11.2 installer such as [ ] Install only Queue for remote.

Since typed text lacks tone and expression, I'll state that I empathise with the inevitable chaos which comes with a software ownership transfer, and that I'm favorably disposed to Poser and Rendo, so I don't mean to screech. :P That said, this problem does need to be solved, particularly since there is no option to simply stay with the current Poser version. Again, I'm happy to help with beta testing.

I see from the Poser 11'2 update questions thread that at least Glitterati3D and anom0laus have used networked Queue rendering in 11.2 but did these only involve 2-3 machines with full P11.2 installs? Has anyone installed only Queue on several remotes? If so, how?

From what i understand there's no separate install on the QM. Need to be the full version installed. Maybe possible to do a hack since the QM have it's own exe.

Thanks, ghostman. Perhaps I'll do a bit of unofficial beta testing, by installing P11.2 onto some servers, then manually deleting what isn't needed.

The poser installer has an option for que manager only.

The poser installer has an option for que manager only.

Excellent! 😁 Thank you, bwldrd! Both my PPro2014 Game Dev and my P11.1Pro were working this morning, but are dead now, so I can't do network rendering until I get P11.2 installed and all of the remotes updated to match build number.

Run the P11.2 installer. This window has "full installation" selected by default. open the drop-down menu, and change the selection to "Queue Manager only".

I began installing Queue-only to my remotes. The installer runs quickly. 😄

However, the Queue build number does not match that of P11.2

Come to think of it, shouldn't the build number of P11.2 itself be 11.2.2720? i.e., four digits in the third section?

OK, just tried sending a render off to a remote. It worked! Apparently, the Queue no longer requires precise build number match.

Which maybe fine for this release as it is basically version 1.0.0.0 (I know that it is not that but as it is Bondwares first version) but when the next release comes out they should start to enforce the matching or there could be weird problems as some render remotes are not running the correct version

Agreed.

I have an animation rendering on my network now, Firefly with IDL mesh lighting. Everything is working properly. Nineteen remotes and the master all rendering.

I'll run a Superfly meshlight animation after this.

Superfly Queued renders work, too. 😀 I ran about a dozen jobs, totaling several hundred frames.

All of my machines are Win7; it would be good to hear from some who has a mixed network of Mac OSX, Win10, Win7. 😃
