As a user of Poser, with a legitimate copy of the software, I just wanted to say it's a good decision not to cripple the software or supply a watermarked output. Few things put me off from trying out new software than a dumbed down version (not all features are available) or putting that frustrating watermark on the output. To me, a fully functioning program will sell itself after a trial period. I think new users will create greater demand and draw more vendors (both old and new) to create for Poser. Good job!

When I first heard of poser there was a trial version of poser 6. It was fully functional but with limited content. I can't say how long the trial lasted because a short time of playing with James casual, the figure that came with the trial, and I was hooked. Been a user ever since.

That sounds like Poser Debut.

tomyee ( ) posted Wed, 09 October 2019 at 10:03 PM

I assume Poser Debut is a defunct product today, but I remember it with a certain fondness. It was fairly affordable ($50?) and while stripped down, I always thought it would've been a good way to introduce new users to Poser.

It would be nice, after Bondware gets LeHomme finished, if they could revisit something like a Poser Debut product again. Have the two great human figures (LeFemme, LeHomme), stripped down features (I'm thinking you can leave out FaceRoom, the advanced tab of the Material Editor, Fitting Room, Joint and Group Editor, Hair Room, maybe even the Cloth Room until Bondware can update it to be more user-friendly e.g. include built-in presets for cotton, silk, etc).

The idea would be to release something cheap ($50 or less), something only aimed at newbies (who barely know what a polygon even is). I would actually keep in something like Bullet Physics because you want the newbies to enjoy playing around in 3d, and it might be fun to let them tumble stuff around or have the figures get tossed around like ragdolls... the more they play with the program, the more they'll learn it and want to upgrade, buy more content to dress up the figures, etc.

I would also keep the comic book rendering stuff too, because it would get some users to into using Poser to make their own comic books. Perfect for maybe a kid doing a school project, or an amateur indie comic book creator wanting to create some initial rough art for their comic. In fact, instead of giving it a generic name like Poser Debut, call it "Poser Comic Book Creator" to be very specific about what the program does, and so that it also shows up if someone googles for "how to create my own comic".

So basically it would be the Daz Studio model of growing the Poser user base, aimed at young users who are vaguely interested in 3d art or making their own comics or manga. The kids are already used to the idea of in-app purchases, so this could also let them buy different content to dress up LaFemme as a superheroine, or morph LaHomme into different creatures, etc.

Same tomyee, I liked Poser Debut. I made the switch from DAZ to Poser thanks to Poser Debut. It had all the features I needed for the time along with great little tutorials and guides to familiarise myself with the layout. Then when I wanted access to goodies like advanced materials I upgraded.

Great idea. It should allow for skintight outfits (since superheroes often are dressed like this) but figure would omit the gens and nipples. The program should also let the kids/users "dress" their characters by applying just textures (second skins) so that the kids can still make up the outfits by painting some designs.

To make it easier for them to load their own simple accessories or scene props, the program should allow the user to import Wavefront OBJs. I remember when Daz Studio first debuted, the one thing that stopped me from adopting it and drove me crazy was that there was no built-in OBJ import (although I think you could buy a plugin to do it, but that seemed like something that should've been built in... you don't want to come off as being greedy right from the outset). I consider that a basic feature. If Bondware wanted to annoy me, leaving that out would do the trick.

The idea should be to entice the kids to want to upgrade by showcasing much more advanced features e.g. a FaceRoom that works with Le Homme and LaFemme (and perhaps a non-nude version of teen boy/girl too) so that the kids/user can transfer their own face to the Poser figures and insert themselves into their own comic or cartoon. This could be sold as a separate add-on feature to the base program.

The base program should support Python so that a 3rd party developer could create (sell) a module that maybe could generate word balloons that the kids could type in text dialogue into and have it inserted into the scene - not sure how hard it would be but doesn't sound super-hard.

Bondware isn't Daz, I'm sure they wouldn't do anything to deliberately annoy me, right? 😇

But because I think they care far more about the future of Poser than Smith-Micro, I hope they'll at least consider the idea of an entry-level Poser aimed at total 3D newbies, and maybe specifically targeted for young fans of comics, manga and anime.

My friend's daughter is a huge anime/manga fan and wanted to make her own simple comic book recently, and initially I wanted to recommend Poser (or Daz, in case he didn't want to spend hundreds of dollars on what could just be a passing fancy but I try to avoid helping out DazStudio since I started off myself on Poser and am biased, lol).

I couldn't do it.. both Poser and Daz are just too complicated for young people to get into unless they're already really into computer graphics and know some 3d basics. I ended up recommending Manga Studio to her instead, since she can sketch... but I wish I could've pointed her to a "Poser Comic Book Creator" or something which was cheap/free with just enough to get her excited to pose figures and do simple renders. Something fun to play with, and eventually get more serious about as she learned the tools and figured out what she wanted to achieve.

Manga Studio (now Clip Studio Paint) actually has a very simple 3d to 2d rendering system, you can load Lightwave3d and Wavefront OBJ files into multiple 3d layers, and it comes with a mannequin figure that can be posed to do exactly what Poser Debut used to do. And has lots of other 3d objects like houses, furniture, etc. that can quickly create a scene. It has a cheap version that only costs $50USD and a pro version that is a wee bit more expensive than Poser 11 ($219US, vs Poser11 which is $200US). I actually switched over to MSEX4 ages ago, and don't use Poser for much other than periodic cloth simulation, precisely because it is overall easier to use and I get decent comic book-style renders out of it. NOTE: the 3d support is only in the more costlier $219 version, but my friend would upgrade her to that from the cheap version if she really demonstrated that she'd fallen in love with the program.

The trial period on Poser11.2 is what, 21 days and then after that it is totally disabled? That's great for pro-artists to test it out, but I think teens would need much more play time with a product to fall in love with it. I kind of prefer the option of paying $50 for a more basic, but still useful version of the product without any kind of deadline so that there's no rush to fool around with it, learn it, and then decide that they want more.

Here's a screenshot from the Clip Studio Paint webpage. It really does remind me of Poser Debut. NOTE: I actually may be wrong about the 3d import feature only being in the expensive version (that's the one I use, so I'm not that familiar with the $50 product). If you can load 3d objects and pose them in the cheap version too, then wow, that's a pretty great product for doing comics at a cheap price!

Boni ( ) posted Fri, 11 October 2019 at 4:59 PM

Played with this in Clip Studio ... easier to just import Poser renders. shrug

I'm still curiously waiting to see what actually happens when the trial period runs out. Ideally, it would just lock all the pro features unless an upgrade is purchased. But if Bondware wants to enforce the only one version of Poser going forward early... then perhaps what you suspect instead will be the case.

Wait, why would it lock up the pro features? From my understanding, it's a trial like any other software trial - once it runs out, the program won't open unless you buy it. If you're talking about upgrades, the non-Pro Poser 11 users and the Poser 2014 Game Dev users were GIFTED the upgrade and don't need the trial. Previous version users can purchase the upgrade or return to their previous version.

Is this the early release of La femme, not 1.1? Do you know of any problems integrating this to a Poser 10 runtime? I ask because there are some folders, with the same names, in they old runtime. Does the new runtime contain things specific to poser 11 that would break older stuff if I overwrite?

La Femme only works in P11+

It just won't do you any good to move it to a P10 runtime.

you can save your self allot of work just by adding the Poser 11 runtime that contain the models as additional external runtime into Poser 10 this will not cause any issues and Poser 10 will find all the necessary files in the Poser 11 runtime you added.

Thinking of something for chidren reminds me of when I was young ... (born London in 1939).

One of Dad's friends in Canada used to send us various newspapers, from which my sister would cut the paper dolls and clothes (attached to the dolls with tabs) and then get me to colour the dresses and then help her dress the dolls. Seems to me that's why I'm still 'dressing dolls' ...

[And there were the cartoon strips - Lil Abner, Flash Gordon and others I've forgotten.] He also sent the Saturday Evening post, which I loved.

Ah, the nostalgia - here in Brazil those paper dolls were incredibly famous when I was a kid, and would come in specialized little booklets. I used to collect the Barbie ones and I still have my collection, some of them I never actually cut up, and I kept them all in a neat little folder.

ok never loaded her in P 11 before ... but you are right ! the cones get lost , actually the Props that are not visible in render to be able to select the parts fast. these options can still be selected in the Hierarchy editor but not on the model as there ghost bones .

so one who would like to use these features would have to add new primitives that are attached to these bones. really strange as normally handles should be backwards compatible all poser versions actually supported handles so wonder why they get lost when loading in P 2014. the features still work just that new handles would have to be made.

but at the end it is just a comfortable feature as it is still working through the Hierarchy I think one could live without the visible handles and just select them manually.

I called them "handles" as a way to explain what they are. They're pose chips - those came with Poser 11. But yes, they're mostly an ease of use feature, similar to those used in other 3d packages to animate face expressions etc.

In a way it is understandable that one would want to have Genesis models working in Poser , Good artists are working on expansions and ad-dons for them . some are really impressive. In the other hand it would give Daz allot of control over Poser so after loading La Femme the first time she might have allot of Potential , there would be the need of good artists supporting that model , a long way to go for sure to give real concurrence to those Genesis models that are supported by ex Poser creators that I doubt that they would jump back to Poser ( For sure not the way it is handled at the moment ), this activation stuff does not really make it attractive, also resulting to be a risc as none really knows how it will continue. So the new owners of Poser sure have to figure out a way to make it attractive as it does not only depend on users , it needs to get back quiet some of these creators like aery soul that were supporting it at the time, as Newbies will sure need a few years of experience to reach a good quality.

It was my understanding that SM didn't want to work with DAZ to include support for the Gen 3 and Gen 8 figures. Two figures that Poser can clearly handle. All they need is a one or two or even a three click solution and the masses may do more than pass them by with envy. However, if Rendo (Bondware) can really leverage La Femme and include some other figures like say Hanako for those of who don't demand realism, they can forge their own path. The Romans ruled the world for a bit, say at least 500 years. They did it not by just conquering their neighbors but stealing every idea they could get their hands on (mainly the Etruscan way of life), then they forged their own path with brilliant, bold ideas. Hanako was made for Unity by EFrontier. She is shown below. Don't forget thei a lot of Aiko 3 fans like me who prefer Firefly. I am not a fan of sparkles and perhaps my middle of the road computer doesn't have the muscles to run Superfly. That is, of course for the moment. It's the software that drives the hardware, not the other way. Hmmm, Bondware seems to be in a good position. Here is Hanako. I'm thinking that Darkseal and Leilana could do as well. Can Poser handle Unity as is?

Genesis' weight mapping model is different than Poser's. It may seem like an easy solution, but it's not. And then Daz goes and changes the way it works with every new version. Imagine Poser spending development resources just to make Genesis work, releases a new Poser version that can handle it, then a month later Daz comes up with some Genesis 9 that doesn't work anymore.

We've been over this conversation a thousand times over. I'll be here hoping that Poser does NOT try to make Genesis work. IF someone makes a third-party plugin for it, great - but I'd rather have Poser focus its development resources on making POSER better, like giving us displacements for Superfly, a better dynamic system, etc.

Please tell me what I am allowed to say that will not offend you so I will be able to sleep at night....

I honestly don't get it with all these whining about not be able to use G in Poser. There's a specific program that is built for using G. Use that.

Two things:

  1. I don't whine. I don't have a whine in me. Kindly direct your remarks elsewhere.

  2. I bastarding hate DS - I've tried to use it several times and cannot abide it - so that's not an option.

You can say whatever you like. Realistically, though, when a blanket statement about "whining" is thrown out, do you honestly expect nobody will respond?

We can use Genesis in Poser. Today. I was just thinking perhaps it could be automated because I see some wonderful models that I would like to use. Although to be honest, I'm more interested in their props than their figures. There is nothing wrong with having more options. Except one option is not on the table, Ghostman. I echo Sam's thoughts on this. His second sentence below. I would never tell you what to do but to suggest someone use that specific program? I won't do that.

And as for whining, I will serve no whine before it's time. It must be allowed to breathe first. I still haven't tried absinthe. I want to though. Just once.

@Ghostman Finally, thank you for not calling me out as I was joking when I included you along with Miss B as an American Millionaire. I thought you were a Yank like me. I should've known better. 3 out of the last 4 people to respond to this thread are not Americans at all. I don't know where Gate is from so the ratio might be higher.

Hell no you don't whine. Neither do I. I do drink it. Prefer a Margarita. In a dress. (Try that one Ohki)

My "Starter Drug" was a free version of Poser (I think it was Poser 2") as bonus to a PC-Magazin 20 years ago. Ever since I can't get away from this stuff. I bought the following versions and now I use Poser 11 Pro. The actual trial of Poser 11 is a very good idea to bring the software closer to more curious people. Once used a lot of them never can't withdraw the never ending possibilities Poser offers.

Swedish! How very cool! First, Do you live there? Near Stockholm? Secondly, how fast is your internet? Is your Poser software in Swedish as well?

Thirdly. I say this often. Your English, including spelling and grammar is better than most Americans. It's perfect. We Americans are a curious lot with accents from Cornbelt rasp like a rusty saw, Urban speak like a Lousiana French pimp to a Texas drawl to a New England overlay. When I send a site mail, I often include a general date and my location which is near San Francisco so that our correspondence has a global feel. Maybe even a hint of history should any of us become famous.

Trust me on this. If any American said, "So Solly but kin I axe you for a plate of sketti?" Pretty much any American would know what was meant and wouldn't mention the difference in Lingo.

Ah, sadly I don't drink anything alcoholic. Hate the taste, honestly. No, it won't "grow on me" 😂

Ah, the nostalgia - here in Brazil those paper dolls were incredibly famous when I was a kid, and would come in specialized little booklets. I used to collect the Barbie ones and I still have my collection, some of them I never actually cut up, and I kept them all in a neat little folder.

Yes - with all those tabs ... Ah me, that was a few days ago, and when we were younger than we are now ...

And, as I may have mentioned once or twice recently, being rather forgetftul .., I'm still dressing dolls.

I have. by the way, saved a screenshot of Okhi's Brazilian dolls for my wife to enjoy; when we had the floods here in Carlisle (UK) she spent a happy hour ot two with a cut out Shirley Temple doll, until we got the electricity back (after 30 hrs).

When young I had a Brazilian penfriend in, I think, Tijuca,; and my uncle Philip was a sales rep in Rio for some time. Yes, not quite on topic. Just thought it might interest someone.

I can DM you more pictures if you want - quite a lot of pages on that folder of mine.

I was born pretty close to Tijuca, btw, though my family moved away from Rio when I was 2.

As far as I can remember (and this was in the 50s) I had a penfriend (who spoke Portuguese, but I wrote in Spanish) on Rua Saboica LIma 77.

Isis Vianna de Paula.

We were encouraged at school to have penfriends so we could improve our language skills. Even though, as eeryone knows, 'the English don't learn foreign languages .."

Thank you for your replles; those paper dolls take me back to another (long lost) world.
