Subject: Does Poser run in Mac OS Catalina?

inquire ( ) posted Wed, 09 October 2019 at 3:16 PM · edited Fri, 08 November 2024 at 6:31 AM

I'm wondering. There were thoughts that OPEN GL and OPEN CL would be removed in place of METAL. Is there any Mac user out there running Poser in Catalina?

All reports so far suggest that it's fairly buggy still; some people have got Catalina working fine, while others have chaos (MacRumors Forum). I might try it out on an external drive later; NB - any 32bit apps will no longer work in Catalina, so don't upgrade if you have any favourites you want to keep on using.

I've installed Catalina on an external drive and will be checking all apps during the day. Smooth install (2015 iMac).

Apart from Adobe Bridge all my CS2 apps are broken (now switching to Affinity products).

OK. Poser runs fine (11.2.296), and I'll check 11.2.307 tomorrow morning.

Pity about the 32bit apps; and there are a few other niggles. If I don't like it I shall roll the drive back to Mojave. If you have 32bit apps that have not been upgraded to 64bit then you migt be well advised to wait until they are upgraded before installing Catalina.

There's a fine review of Catalina at Ars Technica: https://www.renderosity.com/mod/forumpro/?thread_id=2938617 Apparently, there's enough of Open GL and Open CL to run Poser. But, the versions have not been updated since Apple deprecated these back in Sierra (i think). Are there newer versions of Open GL and CL? And, if so, can the lords who own Poser devise a way to get these new versions to our OSes and get Poser to run in them, without causing any problems with the OSes or Poser?

What is your current version of Poser? Did you download the upgrades yet? The extra content?

That should read CS6, not CS2 ... Poser version 11.2.307 (latest).

That's awful! CS6 is part of my normal workflow. How did it break or perhaps why did it break is a better question! The other questions were meant for inquire who wants to know what's going to happen before he dives in. I can't blame him for worrying but for me the Bondware Migration was seamless. Then again, I use windows 10. Fighting against the wind gets tiresome and right now Microsoft rules the computing world.

CS6 contains 32bit items. So I lost Photoshop; inDesign I don't use (I have Quark) and Illustrator hasn't worked for some time; and Acrobat went as well. So if you want any of those items you have to find alternatives such as Affinity Designer and Photo - or sign up to the Cloud version of Photoshop etc. [There's been quite a lot of bother about Adobe cancelling serial numbers (see their Forums) and pushing people towards their Cloud.]

I was told a while ago that I would regret signing up for subscription. That person, long gone from the forum might've been right. I've had it for about 2 years, they gave me a three month freebie when I went to cancel it so it's been about $170 in total. Now I want my own version that doesn't phone home, just in case Adobe starting doing what you said. 10 bucks a month isn't much but all those subscriptions, phone service, et al...I just want to decrease the output of green and not think about it. None of my apps have been affected but Microsoft rules computerland. Apple doesn't like 32 bit Items? I'm surprised!

We were warned some time back that Mojave would be the last OS which could run 32bit apps. Which is why I have Catalina on an external drive to test it, and Mojave on the internal drive.

CobraBlade ( ) posted Sun, 13 October 2019 at 5:33 AM

Apple killing off 32bit applications is such a bone head move though. If they really had to do this, then wait until OS 11... who does this even benefit?

I wasn't happy with the death of Rosetta either to be honest, but with this trend to kill our apps and games at every possible opertunity has me seriously considering Microsoft again in the future.

I have switched to Affinity products. There's even a blending textures brush in Affinity Photo that I like better than the one in Photoshop. The last PS version I used was 5.1. I stayed away from the on-line subscription.

The performance of the latest Affinity apps on a Mac is impressive.

As for Catalina... I didn't realize it was happening, but my MBPr mid 2012 (16GB) updated itself to Catalina. I should say tried. It never completed a boot again. Destroyed the OS, the recovery partition (which it also updated), the NVRAM. You name it.

After days of trying to get it to boot into anything (it would boot, 100% progress bar, then power off with no warning). Reinstalling produced the same result. Over and over. I finally booted to an external drive, mounted the wrecked HD recovered most of my data (most was backed up elsewhere, anyway), flatlined the internal SSD and got Mojave back on it. Then a day of recovering 1TB of backup, reinstalling, etc. Wha a mess. My keyboard is still screwed up. Keys on the right hand side don't work reliably. Like, the enter key. Uhg.

Was faced with buy a new MBP. But I do't like the new MBPs. I need the function keys. I'm a programmer. not a fan of the butterfly keyboard, but really have o have the F keys. Was looking at refurbed 2015's... Very sad. Not sure what I'm going to do. Time Cook's Apple blows. There. I said it. Without swearing, even.
