Subject: Cant launch Poser after reinstall with Windows 10

3-d-c ( ) posted Fri, 29 November 2019 at 11:23 PM · edited Mon, 23 December 2024 at 10:53 AM

Hi and sorry if i ask a dull question: I have Poser Pro 11, ran it under windows 8.1 previously. I have installed windows 10 and didnt launch it for some time. Now i get an error that the grace period for activation has expiried (though it was activated before). It has my serial number in there, but doesnt accept it, says that the maximim amount of activations has reached. Any idea?

thanks

I can't believe how many users slipped through the net with the update/change of owner. Several of 'em aren't newcomers, either, notably 3DC, above. I dunno who decided on the how/what/where/why of the handling but, considering how many of these posts have cropped up, it's far from ideal.

Just out of curiosity, what would you have thought adequate communication other than what was done? While I admit that I am STILL waiting for the 'new home of Poser' banner on the site which I think is vastly overdue, I got enough articles, newsletters and emails to prep me as a pure user.

ThunderStone ( ) posted Sat, 30 November 2019 at 6:03 PM

But, Rhia, some people don't bother to read totally the whole newsletters or what have you. They just briefly skimmed over the least interesting information even if it is brand new about Poser. Familiarity breeds contempt. ?

But how is that Rendo's fault? I am just trying to figure out why the how/ why/ what handling of communication is faulty when the receiver chooses not to be informed.

Did every user receive an email saying something like this...

Please read IMMEDIATELY because your copy of Poser will stop working soon if you don't!

Forget newsletters, special announcements, or whatever. A simple, direct email with a simple to understand title will catch many more people.

I dunno, 'Why should you update to Poser 11.2' is pretty dang important seeming to me -- that was the title of the email I got as an end user on September 16th. Maybe they should have said 'OMG, open immediately otherwise it's the end of the world'??

I've been on a lot of courses about autism recently, having autistic kids and being autistic meself and one thing that came up time and again is that, although autistic people sometimes have difficulty putting things across, neurotypical people are absolutely hopeless - all the damn time - because they almost never say explicitly what needs to be said.

"Why should you update to Poser 11.2" is so bleedin' vague, for one example. For a start, it's a question, not a direct statement. It reads like a sales pitch and, in particular, the kind of sales pitch that everyone remembers and hates from years ago, such as, "A Doctor writes... Why should you switch to Finkler's Pile Cream". It's mealy, weaselly and downright annoying.

If the wording had been simple and direct, many more people would have opened and read it. As it stands, I'll put good money down that a great number of 'em went deleted unread. If you really, absolutely want people to read something, make sure they get a very good idea before opening the mail. "Read this or your copy of Poser will roll over and die" is pretty straightforward.

Agree with that. "Why should you update to Poser 11.2" is exactly the kind of sales pitch sent out by many companies even now. You expect a message like that to contain a list of wonderful new features, that will be all yours at a special low price if you act now!

I think a lot of people don't use Poser very often, and just see no reason to read emails from Smith Micro or Rosity, which are almost always sales pitches. You just don't expect software you've bought, paid for, and installed, to stop working.

It was La Femme that drew me back to Renderosity. Without that, I'd probably be one of those who had no idea I had to upgrade until Poser stopped working.

So you are telling me that if I am a Poser user, and I get an email with that title specifically referring to an upgrade of a software I am using, that is vague and the majority of people would not open it? Wow.

Yes. I use dozens of software programs, and get emails offering upgrades or add-ons daily. The vast majority go unread. Most of the software I'm using is several versions out of date. If it does what I need it to do, I see no reason to upgrade.

yes, there are a number of posts reading - "my poser stopped working" - but rather than look for an answer on the forum everyone asks it - regardless of the title of any email sent out - how many of those people would have read it? Also, not everyone subscribes to 'Rosity email and others are (or at least have been ) on ISP blocklists as spam.

you cannot blame the fact that some people "slipped through the net" on renderosity, that is saying that Renderosity did not do enough, regardless of the newsletters, the emails sent out, the countless forum posts including one titled "Why should I upgrade to poser 11.2?" the Announcement posts that are titled "Announcement: Has your Poser stopped working? License issues? Can't start Poser?" at the TOP of both this and the poser technical forum.

Seriously, that is not doing all they can do?

I don't subscribe to Renderosity email, although, admittedly, I have been getting more than usual contacts from them lately, I generally treat emails like phone numbers. If I know the person calling, then I pick up. If not, oh well. I'm usually surprised to get email from Renderosity, or Smith Micro, for that matter, but it does happen. So I'll open that email.

Not naive - nobody said that.

It just looks like you have more time than others ...

And yes, I thought that "why should you update ..." mail a sales pitch too. I did read it, because I had time at that moment, but if I had more interesting things to do, I wouldn't read it.

cabled ( ) posted Sun, 01 December 2019 at 7:16 PM

Yep, "Why should you update Poser" really reads just like "Why you should stop eating these 4 foods" in an email title. It is not alarmist to just come right out and say what you mean. Especially considering you may be (probably are) dealing with people who don't have English as their native language, and even among "Englishes" there is plenty of room for ambiguity.

Be blunt. Like a baseball bat. Or a cricket bat. Or something else blunt :)

I bring it up once again. My email is labeled as to who it's from. I can see when it's from Renderosity or Smith Micro. Now, it's possible your email isn't set up to tell you who it's from, but if it's not, how do you decide to open it or not?

it is pointless to harp on about this - the reasons, and solutions for the update have been expressly laid out in the forum - it's up to you to read the forum posts that have dealt with it. .

TBH, I usually don't open emails from Renderosity. If I'm interested in Poser, I'm here, and get the info I need from the forum and the blog. If I'm not currently interested in Poser, I'm not here, and I'm sure not interested in commercial email from Rosity. (It sounds like the OP might be in this boat, since he said he hadn't run Poser in a long time.)

If I want to make a purchase, I'll search my emails for Renderosity coupon to see if there's any that are active, but aside from that, I don't open commercial emails. I just get way too many of them.
