Subject: No longer able to set render thumbnail memory to auto-delete.

Psych2 ( ) posted Sun, 12 April 2020 at 8:15 PM · edited Sat, 30 November 2024 at 6:05 AM

There used to be a setting in the General Preferences > Documents tab to auto-delete all but the latest thumbnail next time Poser is launched, but it is no longer there. The other setting, Launch to Preferred Scene, is still there and I keep it checked so my preferred launch is of a blank preview window. On the next tab, Interface, I have tried both Launch to Previous State and Launch to Factory State with no difference made. I also cleared the Undo Cache and reset the Temp files. Still no change. Was this setting removed in 11.2? I get tired of having to manually delete a dozen or more render thumbnails each time I launch... heck -- I don't even know where Poser is finding these images as none of them were saved and so no longer exist on my HDD!

If you are on windows they are saved here c:/Users/Username/AppData/Roaming/Poser Pro/11/RenderCache/ as .exr files.

Thanks for the location of the thumbnail files. Hopefully, there is or soon will be a fix for this problem...

Go to the render tab and set your Max cached renders to something lower than 100.

Psych2 ( ) posted Sun, 12 April 2020 at 8:45 PM

The Render Cache folder was empty or my photo viewer didn't recognize .exr format pics. So I eliminated the folder and the thumbnails are gone! Poser hasn't regenerated the folder or complained about its absence so hopefully the problem is solved.

Thanks again for the help!

Thanks for that tip. I have that set now in case I ever want to save render thumbnails -- if or when I restore the cache folder I just removed...

Poser will regenerate it the next time you do a render. Most viewers won't load the exr files.

It might be a surprise, but the cache is not storing thumbnails, but the full raw render files in .exr format. What you see in the Recent Renders palette are thumbnails generated from the exr files, but those thumbnails only exist in memory while Poser is running, not anywhere on disk.

The full raw renders are cached in case you want to re-render areas (saving a great deal of time if the areas are small), so the new area render gets composited with the prior cached, full render. Multiple area renders can be composited and saved out as a single file in a format of your choice. Deleting the cache will free up a lot of disk space if a large number of renders are contained, so some like their cache cleaned frequently.

I haven't done a render yet so I guess it will regenerate the folder then (at least in the v11.2 folder -- there is also a v11 folder but it's probably no longer active). Glad I already set my Render Cache to the lowest entry possible: one.

Thanks!

That's valuable information to be aware of.
