Subject: Adding a cycles Superfly reflection

Dream9Studios ( ) posted Sun, 19 April 2020 at 9:30 PM ยท edited Sat, 08 February 2025 at 3:10 PM

I've been working on the materials for this scene all day and now my brain is jelly and can't think anymore. I made a beautiful wooden floor with Superfly cycles nodes. I want to add a soft reflection to my wooden floor. In Firefly I'd just plug a raytraced reflection node in but cycles doesn't have any reflection nodes that I can find. How do I add a soft reflection to my wooden floor? Thank you for any assistance!

Without knowing what type of cycle nodes you used it is difficult to instruct where to make the adjustments. Usually, the roughness feature will control the reflective nature of texture in either your diffuse or glossy node.

Okay, so there's no dedicated node for reflections? That answers one question. I'll try adjusting the roughness of my shader setup and see what happens. Thank you.

I'll show you what I'm doing. I'm trying to recreate this product in Poser: Chambre Romantique I purchased the textures, now I just have to make the shaders so everything can look kind of similar or better. I'm having trouble with the two glasses and the reflective floor so far. For some reason my glasses render too dark and my floor won't reflect. I'm beginning to think it's more my render settings than my shaders but I'm not sure yet. Render-2.jpg

With textures like the chair, curtain, floor, carpet - you could as easily use the Poser Surface and just tick the Firefly & Superfly buttons - Superfly picks up more detail in the textures automatically.

Another option is to use the Poser Surface - tick only Superfly - and then add the Glass BSDF from Cycles into the reflection color. From there you can set the reflection strength as you like it. It will give you a glass look - for the wine glasses. It will give you a reflection for the floor (add in the texture as you normally would - just add the Cycles as the reflection color).

Your render settings in Superfly - as long as it's not grainy, you're good - I only use the presets. There's nothing special you have to change.

The black on the glass is a Superfly feature - it's not a setting. It does render glass very black. Ditto metal - the more metallic you go the darker it gets.

@PandaB5 Thanks! I'll try that for the floor. I was able to lighten the glasses by adjusting their IOR, I think. Here's an updated preview of the entire room. Render-3sm.jpg

IIRC, GlassBSDF does not work very with the typical PoserSurface.

Rather than the glassBSDF node, use the glossy one. Try added a mixshader node and plugging the glass into one socket and the rest of your shader into the other. Use the fac to control the about of reflection vs the amount of shader and the roughness on the glossy to control the softness of the shine.

this works as a reflective surface

In Superfly every surface is reflective. In Firefly, Specular is used to provide fake reflections (shininess) because FF is so slow at rendering reflections, especially blurred/soft ones. SF is way faster, so it does raytraced reflections on everything all the time. SF interprets any specular node as reflection. This is why SF requires an environment to enclose the scene.

If glass is rendering too dark, check the maximum bounces setting on the right hand side of the render settings dialog - the default is 3 which is too low. Also, I prefer using GGX for any of the nodes which have the Distribution option - I think the falloff from the highlights looks far better.
