Have you ever heard the phrase, "What's old is new again?" Well we are taking that phrase to a whole other level in our upcoming contest, the Classic Art Contest, that starts on May 22nd. We want you to dust off the art periods you have loved for years and create an artwork that is inspired by those art periods or an artwork from those art periods. If you need a refresher on the various art periods, then we have a list of the art periods on the contest page in the entry specifications area. If you would like to find out more about this upcoming contest, then click on the button below. We hope to see your entries soon! ?

“A true artist is not one who is inspired, but one who inspires others.” ~ Salvador Dali

Hello,

I’d like to take a moment to explain this contest and why it’s so unique among all the contests we’ve ever had. This contest, while it is called the Classic Art Contest, is not restricted to any theme. You can reproduce a specific work of art, or submit an entry inspired by any art period in history, or from any artist in history, from prehistoric art to modern art.

I have listed all the major periods of art, however, there are many sub-categories not listed. For instance - the painter, Ralph Albert Blakelock, was a Romanticist American Painter, but he also fits into the category of Tonalism; a style of painting in which landscapes are painted with dark neutral hues. If moody atmosphere landscapes are your thing, then you are welcome to submit that as your entry, and list Tonalism as your inspiration.

On the other hand, you may enjoy only doing characters. The Dutch Golden Age has many examples of wonderful character studies, and you might already fit into that category. One of my favorites from that period is, Girl with a Pearl Earring by Johannes Vermeer. You don’t have to try to reproduce that painting in 3D (although it would fine if you did), but you can use it only as inspiration and create a unique work of art in that style.

I think we’ll see a few reproductions of The Scream by the Norwegian Expressionist, Edvard Munch. And if you can figure out how to do that morph, I look forward to seeing it. (Please, no Photoshopping the original painting, you have to create a unique derivative replica if you choose to do a reproduction, no nudity).

You are also not restricted to just paintings - You can create statues/sculptures/vases. (Again, no nudes. Also, no violence. You can have a weapon, but it will be reviewed by staff. The key factor will be if the weapon is being used in violence. An example of acceptable use of a weapon would be someone just wearing a sword at their waist as was common once upon a time).

You are permitted 3 entries. And please use them. You increase your chances of winning by presenting 3 images. One image might not click with voters, but with 3 chances, you might find that spark. I would recommend spacing them out when you submit so they’re not clumped together.

In this contest you are not permitted to put your name on the image or in the description, and the submission must not have been previously posted anywhere, and you cannot post it anywhere else during the contest. And no soliciting votes.

Good luck and have fun. The contest will start on May 22.
