Subject: How do i change processing to GPU

typhus3k ( ) posted Thu, 21 May 2020 at 9:34 PM · edited Sun, 01 December 2024 at 11:43 AM

I have no idea why this isn't easier. Maybe i am over thinking it but I've tried everything i know to do and i've tried to search out guides. How the hell do i switch to Preview screen to render from my GPU?

Possibly a deeper question in the same vein. - I am just using the basic models in preview for quick rotoscoping reference for animations. I dont need them to look fancy or anything i just draw over them in photoshop. But when i get 8 9 10 models ive sculpted the system chugs when i move around and do stuff. my compute_0 is 4%ish gpu 21% Cpu 17% but i am getting janky frames like its 2004 WoW and im spinning in a max server Orgrimmar. Its silly as hell on this rig and my system is all 21 or under. I have no fucking clue what I am setting wrong. I played around in the settings but I think at this point the software is too far outside of my understanding or terminology or something, ive been struggling with the hair thing for a bit. I dunno any help is great. thanks in advance

I don't think the preview render has a gpu option. I believe that's only superfly

A lot of figures does bog down a scene. I did 70 once. It was horrid. For 10 models, try setting your preveiw settings to

preview settings.JPG

It also helps to hide any figure you aren't working on. A quick way to do that is open your hierarchy window and click on the eye icon by the universe. Then just show the figure you want to use.

You haven't said what your cpu is. If you look at individual threads while moving around you will see most threads are very lightly loaded so although the cpu is only running at a lowish percentage, one thread is running at or near max.

One way to speed things up is try another display style. In the standard ui setup there is the display style pallet at the bottom left corner, a set of orbs. The default is texture shaded, but smooth shaded might the ok for your use, and using this or one of the other styles might help you.
