Subject: Tutorial Scene - Poser 8 Soft Studio Lights with IDL

Here is the original no-post render nothing changed.

The only thing I changed in the scene was to add my model and her texture and the background props.

Of course my texture is enhanced with the vss already but it really improved in this lighting. :)

And then added a slight tone change in Photoshop.

Let me introduce you to my multiple personalities. :)

Dear Friends

How are you?

Can anyone help me in this situation

Render for IDL Lights, please see the attached image. The only problem im facing is circled in the image, please guide how to remove these black spots and why are they appearing?

Thank you once again for your kind help.

Best Regards

bagginsbill ( ) posted Tue, 14 September 2010 at 6:48 PM

They are appearing because Poser IDL doesn't work quite right. I don't know how to get rid of them.

Gave VSS a try and did some adjustments to the torso shine. I feel the body should have less of a shine than the head

Miss Nancy ( ) posted Mon, 04 October 2010 at 8:02 PM

the one above (dave8) is very nice IMVHO.
to ameliorate the GI (IDL) artifacts in syedady's img, try these settings in d3d renderff script:

  • irradiance sample size 4 or less
  • IDL intensity 0.8 - 0.9
  • 16 bounces
  • 2048 samples (or more)
  • IDL irradiance cache 100.0
  • raytrace irradiance cache (red) doesn't matter
  • don't use AO
  • raytraced shadows
  • 16 pixel samples
  • 0.1 shading rate

these will cause the render time to increase quite a bit

Hi everyone

It's been sooooo long since i came here (Rosity tells me last message in... 2006!) and Wow, i can't believe what i have missed !

I have been working on Poser for more than 10 years now, since version 1 or 2, i don't remember... I just recently discover BagginsBill's work.

This is just a test on a custom modified texture (really unfinnished only one eye with make up...) and i'm more than amazed of the result.

I loaded the scene, a character, the textures. I tweaked a little to add gloss in the lips. I'm not even sure i moved the original lights.

The render times are REALLY low.

Mr BagginsBill, i'm really impressed, and i really want to thank you for all your work and thank you for sharing it and explaining it. You have all my gratitude....
Now, i need to twek it a bit more and see how to do nice stuff. I'm also really amazed by the glowing spheres. I think i'm gonna play with that a bit.

Let's see where it goes :)

Have a nice day

Cecile

You're welcome. The skin and eyes look really good. Too much lip gloss, but I'm sure you know that already.

Really glossy lips also look fake without bump - needs more bump.

Thanks for the render!

Yes, i tried to boost the gloss on purpose. Some lip gloss give a special effect as if you put a lot of wax on it so imagine a lip full of shiny wax, you wouldn't see much bump on it.

As for the eye, the average texture is really enhanced by your amazing vss. I'm really impressed by the depth it gives to the eye white.

Hi folks, I know it's been awhile but I only get to be creative once in the year, and the last two I did arts and crafts...

I'm a poser pro 2014 hobbyst, new to Daz Studio, I feel like a dinossaur with my machine but still got a few tricks up my sleeve. I just downloaded and played with this amazing set up and was wondering if I could make dramatic lights with it? Very noir with rims, almost no light at all. Also, where do I go to control the intensity of the light?

I'm sorry if the question is stupid, but bare with me, I believe in constant learning.

It's been a long time but IIRC that set up uses a large IDL emitter box and a reflector (soft box) in a void. I imagine you would want to increase or decrease the ambient values on the emitter box and fiddle with IDL intensity in the Render Firefly dialogue. I believe that the default intensity for that would be around 65. The set up includes a rim light. Very nice soft shadows and articulation of forms there.

As I said it's been a very long time since I've read that or used the lighting set up there but it's a fascinating and very informative thread, you should read through the whole thing...

I think that perhaps this set up wouldn't be right for noir style renders as noir imagery is stylistically reliant on stark light and shadow with generally high contrast, the entire filmic style of noir basically arised from limitations of budget and poor lighting...

Thanks for the response EldritchCellar. Amazing renders. I did read through the entire post, I am a pre-historic fan of BB and his works. I found out that if you distance the main light you get "darker" lights. About the noir I kinda figured since BB himself said that rim lights are spectular based effetcs, I have other sets to achieve this imagery, just being curious.

Yes. IIRC the set contains 2 specular only lights, a frontal and a rim. The diffuse lighting coming from the emitter, bouncing and acting as a fill. I don't see why you couldn't utilize additional lights and use the emitter as a sort of subtle fill. I think I added lights to the above renders...

Rendered this one with this box setting, using IDL (used a sphere with texture around). V4 texture is one of the INKs of old AlphaseeD, did not tampered with VSS (I forget how to use it properly, and realised that the .py was not installed). I enjoy the result a lot, the softness remindsme of some iray renders in Daz, especially using the lights of Fabiana, avaiable here ate Rendo.box_light_bb.png

We have the advantage of SSS and GC that wasn't available at the time. Would have made a big difference in those old renders of mine, although some of that was faked or implemented via shaders in VSS.

True indeed, nevertheless I still adored the way the light bounces with this setting. I adore soft lights and it was the reason that I started using Daz Studio, I found it was easier , with my knowledge, to obtain this results in Iray than in Poser and IDL+SSS.

I'm testing a lot while I still have time to be creative.
