Subject: Free add-ons and plugins

It occurs to me, there is no single repository here for the many free add-ons and plugins for Blender. I'm going to start one here. I hope it flourishes!

Let me start with Jayanam's Jmesh Tools for sculpting. He also has a demo video.

EXCELLENT!! Now to see if I can add any. 😉

Edited to Add: OK, just checked my Blender related list over at HW, and there's only 1 free add-on, and it's an old link from back in 2015, but it might still be useful.

One that I use a lot is Greg Zaal's Gaffer, which used to be payware, but is now more like "trialware": you can use it as long as you want, and are asked to "consider" paying for it if you like it. His HDRI Haven has lots of great, free HDRI to use with that addon.

Yes! I have seen a lot of PureRef in some of the tutorials I've been watching! I mean to try that. Gaffer looks great, too.

Miss B, I downloaded the brushes. I have use for them! It seems the addon link is dead. But the brushes themselves are the important part. They include some very useful shapes.

This is wonderful! Thank you all for adding links! 😂

Ohhhh good to know. I'll change the info in the HW Blender list I have to make sure folks know only the Brushes are available. It's not actually surprising the add-on link is dead, since it's circa 2015.

OK, I'm a bit miffed, as when I unzipped the file it had a .blend file, but when I opened the ,blend file in Blender, it doesn't show you thumbnails of all the brushes, so I'm not sure how I would choose which one I want. Is there another way to access these?

OK, I had forgotten to go into Sculpt Mode, but even when I did, all I see is a list of brushes that come with Blender, so how did you get to use the ones you just downloaded?

Right! You want to put the texture directory somewhere you can reach it. I have a texture directory where I keep all sorts of map tiles. When you want to use one of these textures for a sculpting brush, you pick your draw brush, click the texture icon, and add the texture file you want as an alpha map. This video demonstrates all that and more.

Thanks Torq. I was looking at some of Grant's tutorials yesterday, but didn't see that one, as my search was for sculpting.

Glad to help, Miss B! 😀

Miss B ( ) posted Mon, 15 June 2020 at 2:44 PM

Well, turns out that's set up for 2.8, BUT he had a link in the info area under the video for 2.79, so watched that one first. Now to figure out a way to be able to access them using the included thumbnails instead of the alphas and textures. The add-on, if it were still available, would have done the trick.

Anyway, just had some fun playing with a few of them, so now to get used to the different settings before attacking the class lesson 😉
