Subject: How can I convert PNG to RSR?

Royfitz ( ) posted Tue, 30 June 2020 at 12:01 PM · edited Thu, 28 November 2024 at 8:30 AM

I'm currently still using P5, and the content uses RSR's to show in the the libraries. Some of my content has PNG's and all I see it the grey shrugging guy. Is there a simple way to convert PNG to RSR without buying P3d0? The evaluation version has the 'convert' buttons greyed out.

Ahhhhhh. Fooled both of us. Look who's laughing now? OP wants to convert png to rsr, not the expected other way around. Hmm.

My scientific sorcery reveals that the aforementioned P3do is the only way (with just a cursory examination of entrails and migratory bird patterns)...

All seriousness though, maybe an image editor like PS or Gimp? Let me look at PS, give me a moment...

Looks like Save As in PS can't do it either...

RSR was a proprietary Poser format, I think.

Though according to the documentation I've found, Poser 4 was the last time it was required. ProPack, Poser 5, Poser 6, and Poser 7 were supposed to be able to read both. After that, it was PNG only.

Royfitz, are you sure you're running Poser 5 and not Poser 4? In any case, if you're not upgrading, it might be worth investing in P3DO Explorer, since many other products you are likely to buy or download will have the same issue.

I have the P3DO Explorer free version and it does .PNG to .RSR conversion. I just tested it on a selected folder and it did the job.

I was wondering if P3dO was the only utility that could do that ... but for the life of me, I could not remember the name ... NOW I have the latest version, thank you

Yeah. Proprietary. P3DO is only option looks like... Free version does not have an evaluation period.

I am curious why OP wouldn't just get Poser 11 though (I know he/she said that they're an infrequent user and didn't want to hear the upgrade rigmarole), I managed to get 11 pro for like 120 bucks, incredibly reasonable I think. Maybe using old OS?

The only other software capable of converting .PNG to .RSR is Dimension 3D's RuntimeZip & Repair. It is not free but it does so much more to fix runtime folders in general.

I just tried it, too, and it worked for me as well. The free version can do batch converts.

Though it's not super intuitive. I had to select one thumbnail in the folder I wanted to convert, go to Tools -> ConvertRSR2PNG, then tick "All Files" and "Png to Rsr."

Royfitz ( ) posted Tue, 30 June 2020 at 2:36 PM

Many thanks chaps.

I checked my new evaluation version of P3d0 and the 'convert' tabs are all greyed out.

HOWEVER... I did a bit of brain-scratching and remembered I had an ancient version on my long-unused Windows XP laptop. I dug it out, plugged it in and fired it up. Copied the entire P3d0 folder onto a memory stick, whacked it in my PC and it works perfectly. ALL my awkward 'little grey guy' PNG's are now RSR and everything works...

I'll look in to getting a much newer version of Poser though. I just don't want to lose my HUGE amount of content on P5...

when and if you decide to upgrade, remember you can link the P5 runtime to the latest version without having to transfer files. However, if for any reason your content is located within the realm of Program files, you may need to consider moving that runtime folder to a shared location for easier access and linking.

What figures do you use Royfitz? Just out of curiosities sake...

Dimension3D Poser File Organizer will also let you save thumbnails as rsr, png, or both. As one of it's many options.

Consider me insane if you wish, but is your reality any better?

Penguinisto ( ) posted Wed, 01 July 2020 at 3:53 PM

Maconverter used to have that ability... too bad it doesn't exist anymore.

Wasn't .rsr just a cobbled variant of .gif or .tif? I can't remember exactly, but damned if I can't shake the memory that somehow renaming a file of a certain image type to .rsr would nominally do the trick.

On the "why Poser 5, why not Poser 11" question. Poser 5 and 6 can still be useful to have/run, re: old scripts like GlowWorm multi-pass, and sending Poser content over into MojoWorld (only via P6, possibly also P5). I believe that some medical and police institutions still use very early versions for making basic training / crime-scene videos, and they don't need photoreal - and in fact prefer the very basic look of the early figures.

Other question why convert .png to .rsr when target app Poser5 accepts .png's? I started with Poser5 and .rsr was a thing of the past then already.

.png formatted thumbnails were usable way back when Poser Pro Pack (PPP) came out for Poser 4 in the late 1990s. This is the first time in all that time that someone asked to convert thumbnails from .png to .rsr, though.

I think it turned out that the actual problem was that he had too many files in one folder.
