Subject: "Custom" runtime

CassandraNorth ( ) posted Sun, 19 July 2020 at 9:14 AM · edited Wed, 20 November 2024 at 10:26 AM

I want to make a "custom runtime" as in I have a base hair (or outfit) and have purchased addons. I want those add-ons (materials or textures) to appear in the same folder as the base. Example: Ali HR-225 and Wolfie Touchable Hr-225.

Anyone has an easy solution for this? I kind of imagine moving Wolfie's textures into the Ali folder - but I need confirmation before doing it - I don't want to mess up my runtime more than it already is ("spring cleaning at the moment)

Texture file paths are hard coded into the associated pose or material file. In general you can group stuff together however you like in the library and it'll work fine. Don't mess with how things are in the Textures or Geometries folders however... that is unless you can edit the file path references in the relevant Library items.

...So if you have a hair model in your library and you want to put all the mat pose files associated with that hair into the same folder with the hair it should be fine. The actual image map files for that hair, in the Textures folder, that's used by those poses shouldn't be messed with unless you want to do some text editing.

Be careful that your spring cleaning doesn't inadvertently cause you more confusion later, which is actually a real possibility.

Probably the worst thing that will happen if you move texture files to unexpected folders is that you'll get "Please Locate such and such" nags by Poser. Which can get really annoying if it's a bunch of files it can't locate because you've moved them. Things could get impossibly complex real quick.

Thank you! I think I will just create a test runtime and add that before cleaning out and getting tedious messages ?

hborre ( ) posted Sun, 19 July 2020 at 11:44 AM

If you have your original content files, create your new runtime folder and install them. Take note of what's in those compressed files, or refer to the documentation files, and delete associated files from your old runtime. Link new runtime to the Poser Library. Caution, creating smaller, content-based runtime folders will become unmanageable within a short amount of time because the Poser Library does not sort runtime folders and your Library folders will grow exponentially. If you are determined to create multiple runtime folders, I would suggest categorizing them by the vendor and installing all the associated files with it. For example, create an Ali Hair runtime folder, install all the hair content that you own from him, then install all the other MATPose files from other vendors. That way all Ali hairpieces are in one runtime folder along with their associated textures and morphs.

Yes! That is exactly what I was after! I will create a test runtime first before reinstalling everything I need/want and only then delete my old runtime. It is HUGE, I have had it for years ?

You can totally customize the Favorites folder (you need to establish a base folder first) and files of ALL types can go there.

You can totally put the texture files in the same folder as the MAT files. I do it all the time and have no problems, but they have to be IN THE SAME FOLDER because that is where Poser looks first, after that it will look for it where the path says it should be (usually the textures folder). But best to only do this for texture addons, and not the original item, unless you want to edit it to load without textures (I do that all the time, but it's more work)

So in your case, I would make a folder for Ali hair, with the hair item in it, then put the MAT folder in the same folder, but leave the textures for it in the textures folder. Then add the MAT folder for the addon and put the textures for that in the addon folder.

So here's an example of how I install it, this is ali hair Hr-149 which is the name of the folder you see here. I usually put everything in the same folder, including the obj, but I edit the cr2 to load without textures and point to where the obj is now. The folder called 'MAT' contains the mat files from the original hair AND the textures for it, the other folders are MAT files for addons, with the textures in the same folder. This way I have everything in one, neat folder. But it's not practical for everyone ;)

This is also the easiest way (I find) to get around Posers inherent way of loading the first 'correct' texture it finds, which can sometimes lead to it loading the wrong texture (because the texture had the same name). If the texture is in the folder with the matpose/material, it will use it first. I remember being very frustrated once about Poser loading the wrong texture for an addon to a clothing item, it kept loading the texture from the original item because it had the same name, and the texture folder it was in was alphabetically before the texture folder of the addon, so Poser found it first and assumed it was the correct one. I hope that makes sense 😁

Which is exactly why, early on in my Vendor career, I learned to make every single texture have a specific name, rather than going with a generic Body, Body2, Face, Face2 etc. It caused some proper headaches in one of my packs. Oh well, live and learn and all that.

Oh, man, I remember that. Especially back in the days of only one runtime, Poser would sometimes glom onto the wrong texture. It was very confusing for newbies. Using generic filenames like "white.jpg" sometimes had some hilarious results.

I bought a really nice car model here but every time I loaded it, I got Victoria's nether regions all over the roof. Seems the car used a texture called "Body", as did a V3 skin... and that was the first one Poser found.

I don't think a car with lady bits painted on the roof would be street legal, somehow. 😂

So the car came with its own 'hood beauty'?

Well, this worked in PP11 ... but I can't seem to get the new folder as I described above to work in P12. I was going to do it through the back door in WIN explorer, but the favorites tab doesn't show up in libraries there. I type in a name for a new folder and it never "takes". Advice?

The folder for the favorites is called "collections". I found it in "libraries" my main runtime and I was able to copy the shortcuts in it from poser 11. I've had no problem added to it either in the library or in windows explorer. If you do the latter, you'll probably need to refresh the library before it will show up.

Same here. Copying over shortcuts isn't a problem, all links remain intact.
