Subject: Question about ground plane and textures.

So the scene will be a simple large ground plane, with some tree props.

I have the ground plane laid out. Then I went to make a texture. Went into the material and setup a simple image map for diffuse color. The texture however loaded with the wrong scale. I figured no problem, I tried to adjust the U and V scale to compensate. But it does not seem to be changing anything in the preview. It is set to Tile and it is a tile-able image. I did some test renders and it seems that no changes are happening to the texture scale in preview or render. What am I doing wrong here? Help! thanks!

An odd anomaly I noticed in Poser years ago is that with some props and figures ... even when you change the scale in the image node in "Preview" there is no change ...BUT once rendered the change takes affect. It's annoying ... but I never thought it enough to report it. It's a shrug moment for me. But when you are building something as you are it becomes a major issue.

You might try using a simple Square primitive instead of the ground plane, or the high-poly "cloth square" if you want to add some wiggles. Textures often do weird things on the official Ground, and generally behave better on a Square.

Oops, I should specify the ONE-SIDED square, not the plain "Square". The plain Square is completely useless because it has two unthicknessed sides. I don't know why it's still included in the Primitives set.

Not sure if it's relevant but I've seen this question asked frequently in the past; if you would like an image of a specific dimension to aspect ratio match a one side square in Poser, simply scale the one sided square in the x and y dimensions to match the image dimensions. So if your image is 3000 × 3000, scale the square to 3000 X scale 3000 Y scale. Apply your image. The aspect ratio will then match. Then scale overall scale to suit the needs of the scene.

...and I'd have to agree with ockham, Poser's ground plane has traditionally always been weird in various ways. I use a high res uv mapped one sided plane. I'm pretty sure the one sided square in props subdivides well though, as at default it's a single poly. You might find it useful to make utility morphs ( via whatever preferred means) for the plane and use that in conjunction with a sky dome or sphere.

It's never bothered me how textures look in preview; I never rely on it for a guide, other than for composition and posing. It is, after all, a preview and generally as rough as a bear's arse. If I really need to see how something looks but don't want to commit to a huge chunk of rendering time, I do a smaller, lower quality render.

Some of you seemed to miss this sentence in the OP

This, of course, cannot be true if the image is wired up correctly and the plane is UV mapped as we all expect it to be.

I'd also prefer to see some proof that the ground plane being used is at all UV mapped. (I.e. show how it renders without scaling.)

I just downloaded and checked latest build to be sure - Poser 11 preview does not respect image_map scale - it doesn't show repetition. This is a very old bug.

But the render does.

However, the OP claimed the render does not.

So I can't sort this out without some visual evidence.

I don't know why the default ground plane was having issues. But I was able to get ground plane HR (high resolution) to work. And as some above pointed out the changes are revealed upon render not preview. I was a bit confused about the "one sided square", I searched for that but found nothing, I opened Blender and stretched out a box to look like a large ground plane then added a material color to top plane. I sadly didn't have much look with that in Poser. Maybe I should have used UV mapper also and not just a material color for a plane? I just did that so Poser could see that side when I exported the obj.
