Subject: When will Poser 12 Mac OS be released?

BinsuJiro ( ) posted Tue, 08 December 2020 at 11:20 AM · edited Fri, 08 November 2024 at 4:50 PM

I'm on a new MacBook Pro running Catalina at present and would like to upgrade my Poser 11 Pro to Poser 12.

Does anyone have an idea about when the Mac OS version will be released or whether it will be compatible with Catalina and above?

randym77 ( ) posted Tue, 08 December 2020 at 4:00 PM

When they originally announced Poser 12, they said the Mac version would be released in "early December." I would not be surprised if they were running behind schedule.

Poser 11 apparently runs on Big Sur, so I would guess Poser 12 will run on Catalina. However, if the Windows version is any example, expect some bugs.

Poser 12 will be compatible with Catalina and we are still hoping for a December release.

Looking forward to the Mac release! Like BinsuJiro, I have a new MacBook Pro. It's a 16" MacBook Pro with 2.4 GHz i9, 8GB AMD Radeon Pro 5600M GPU, 32 GB RAM, and 2 TB SSD, running Catalina. Very excited to see how Poser 12 runs on it. Lee

Are the system requirements available anywhere? Does it work with macOS 10.13 and does Cycles still have CUDA support?

dt00swc ( ) posted Thu, 07 January 2021 at 3:44 AM

So far the Beta update for Mac is saying there's support for Nividia GPUs - but is support for the Mac M1 GPU in the pipeline??

Nagra_00_ ( ) posted Thu, 07 January 2021 at 6:31 AM

Support for M1 GPU is more than unlikely. The current Blender Cycles has dropped openCL and CUDA for macOS, means no support for any GPU. AFAIK there are no plans to port Cycles to Metal and since SuperFly is based on Cycles, there will be no version for M1 GPU. Maybe in a few years when Blender has been ported to Vulkan we will see support for metal in Cycles.

Great. Been waiting to see who supports M1 first, Poser or [the competition]. It looks like I will have PLENTY of time to decide as [the competition] doesn't even run under Big Sur on my Intel MacBook and isn't expected to until 'mid 2021.'

When you want my money, release a working Mac Version. Releasing ahead of brand X will almost assure you of the sale.

Hello! Just wondering if there are any updates on the Mac release.

randym77 ( ) posted Tue, 19 January 2021 at 11:04 AM

Tim said they are planning on a end of month release.

Just got email that its available now. I wonder what the system requirements are.

tburzio ( ) posted Fri, 29 January 2021 at 3:17 PM

Just released! No information on what version of OS, and of course nothing on M1 and Big Sur (even if it will run in emulation).

PilotHigh ( ) posted Fri, 29 January 2021 at 3:35 PM

Mac OS X 10.15 or higher (64-bit OS required) 2 GHz Intel Core 2 Duo processor (64-bit CPU required) 4 GB system RAM (8 GB or more recommended) OpenGL enabled graphics card or chipset recommended (recent nVIDIA GeForce and ATI Radeon required for advanced real-time preview features) 24-bit color display, 1440 x 900 minimum resolution 3 GB free hard disk space (20 GB required to install all included content) DVD-ROM drive (physical product only) Internet connection for updates and required online activation. Optix enabled device recommended for hardware accelerated final rendering (2 GB RAM minimum, Compute Capability 2.0 minimum). An Optix-enabled device is required for Optix accelerated final render. ZBrush 4 or later required for GoZ interoperability. (ZBrush 2021 recommended)

tburzio ( ) posted Fri, 29 January 2021 at 4:16 PM

Those are the minimums and are are not useful for purchasing decisions with the changes going on in the Apple processors.

DocMatter ( ) posted Fri, 29 January 2021 at 5:20 PM

The post I read says it runs on both Catalina and Big Sur as well as the M1 chip. Still going to wait a few days to get it, though... just in case.

tburzio ( ) posted Fri, 29 January 2021 at 8:33 PM

Aha! Yes, well spotted! The second announcement e-mail was far better than the first. No native M1, but they did say "Yet!"

A_Sunbeam ( ) posted Sat, 30 January 2021 at 3:58 AM · edited Sat, 30 January 2021 at 4:05 AM

"Mac OS X 10.15 or higher " so no good on my laptop with El Capitan or iMac with 10.14. No Poser 12 for me!

tburzio ( ) posted Sat, 30 January 2021 at 6:06 AM

Been playing with it on a new M1 Mac mini, and WOW!

@tburzio our dev team members with M1 macs reported Poser ran very well on M1, even under emulation. Sounds like you are seeing the same?

LeeMoon ( ) posted Sat, 30 January 2021 at 10:38 AM · edited Sat, 30 January 2021 at 10:47 AM

I took the Poser survey last year and received a code for 10% off the upgrade from Poser 11 to Poser 12. That code is not working for me to purchase the Mac Poser 12 upgrade. I've entered my valid Poser 11 serial number. Mystified as to what I'm doing wrong. Anyone here able to shed some light on this? :)

The Poser M1 is running slick as a whistle!

Nagra_00_ ( ) posted Sat, 30 January 2021 at 12:31 PM

MacOS 10.15+ so it's not for me, bye bye Poser 12 and upcoming versions. BTW 10.15+ means no GPU accelerated Superfly rendering. I wish all Mac users the patience needed for slow Superfly CPU renderings. Good luck...

tburzio ( ) posted Sat, 30 January 2021 at 12:35 PM

"The GFXBench 5.0 benchmarks revealed that the M1 often outperforms the Nvidia GeForce GTX 1050 Ti and AMD Radeon RX 560. According to Apple, the M1's 8-core GPU can juggle up to 25,000 threads, with the potential to deliver up to 2.6 TFLOPS of throughput." - TechRadar

Nagra_00_ ( ) posted Sat, 30 January 2021 at 1:02 PM

I have a GTX 1080, would use a newer one but it is no longer possible on Mac....

The maximum memory address space of an M1 is 16GB. This is not enough for my use cases. M1 is not a desktop CPU.

tburzio ( ) posted Sat, 30 January 2021 at 1:02 PM

I put a steampunk zeppelin skid_steer_loader on the VP bridge, and it rendered with defaults in 24 seconds. I keep adding things to see if I can get it over a minute.

tburzio ( ) posted Sat, 30 January 2021 at 1:05 PM

You would be surprised. The old way of counting MB of RAM is dead, the Mac now has only cache memory. Very, very different. Still adding things in my quest to slow this thing down!

tburzio ( ) posted Sat, 30 January 2021 at 1:10 PM

Put a Ryan_Casual on the bridge with the skid_steer_loader and it added two seconds to the render time. Hmmm, what else...

Nagra_00_ ( ) posted Sat, 30 January 2021 at 1:23 PM

Old counting of RAM is dead huh, data is now stored in thin air … Don’t get me wrong the M1 is quite good but nothing for me. Maybe upcoming CPU versions but i don’t support that company anymore. Apple has stated that their MacPros are still delivered with Intel CPUs until they have an ARM based Desktop CPU available.

tburzio ( ) posted Sat, 30 January 2021 at 1:25 PM

No, it's stored in really, really fast cache. Apple has said no such thing about their Intel machines, except they will all be gone soon. This little guy is FAST, and the fan doesn't spin up!

LeeMoon ( ) posted Sat, 30 January 2021 at 1:38 PM

Thank you for keeping us informed on how well Poser 12 runs on your M1 Mac, tburzio!

A couple of months ago, I replaced my old iMac with a 16" MacBook Pro, 2.4GHz i9, 32GB RAM, 2TB SSD, 8GB AMD Radeon Pro 5500M. Primarily to run DAZ Studio on since I could still get a new Intel Mac running Catalina instead of Big Sur.

A couple of weeks ago, I bought an M1 MacBook Air, 8-core CPU, 8-core GPU, 16GB RAM, 1 TB SSD. I haven't yet installed Poser 12 on it, nor moved my runtimes over.

I'm highly encouraged to jump in now and start using Poser 12 on the M1 MacBook Air, thanks to your information here.

Thank you!

Lee

tburzio ( ) posted Sat, 30 January 2021 at 1:49 PM

Vincent Bedroom Full 1m30s, adding the jumping skeleton needed another 10 seconds.

Nagra_00_ ( ) posted Sun, 31 January 2021 at 6:11 PM

I managed to install Poser 12 on my old MacMini (2012, quad i7@2.3GHz), MacOS 10.14.

I don’t use it for 3D due to its slow performance… anyway render time for above Vincent Bedroom Full with default render settings and same resolution was about 2m40s. BTW the fan did not spin up ;)

tburzio ( ) posted Sun, 31 January 2021 at 8:32 PM

Not a bad speed-up running under Rosetta emulation! Here's hoping they follow thru on native M1 code!
