Subject: Why not support poser more in the market place?

firecircle ( ) posted Thu, 14 January 2021 at 10:49 AM · edited Fri, 24 January 2025 at 12:55 AM

Hi I will admit being absent from Renderosity for over a decade but now since bondware has bought poser I find myself drawn back-'though somewhat dissapointed. I have joined prime bought poser 11 and twelve but find content for the software .......lacking. I see g8 products everywhere dforce products everywhere and so on There are some who seem to be providing content for poser 12 but fewer than one would hope. So I'm asking guys get behind the software produce some content we can buy and support bondwares purchase of poser. I would create content if I could but I'm a musician and an animator not a content creator. I get that daz content probably sells well for you but if you can create for daz you can create for poser- I know enough about modeling to know that is true. So just asking could you guys make more poser content and I will happily give you my money All the best Al

Well yes and no. I'm an ardent Poser user since 4. It does seem that the market place is flooded with new G8 and DAZ products. But as I search for content for specific projects I can find what I need for Poser. Most times when I look at a vendors offerings the Poser content is larger than DAZ and what there now doing is updating old content to DAZ.What I see has fallen off a cliff is the "characters" development for La Femme. There doing all right with clothing and with XD Morpher I can use most of my old catalogue on her.All the characters look the same in a way. I find that there not nearly as attractive as what Sabby, Seven, Luna3d, Lully or others are are turning out. There I wish they would be turning out there characters for both platforms. Seems like there cutting off half there market which I can't understand since they're obviously selling a product here .

Slightly tangential, but I've astonished several prolific DS prop designers by complimenting their very nice textures and how well their DSF files converted to OBJ, en-route via OBJ+MTL to Poser etc.

( I also run several budget or free 'home design' programs, which I/O OBJ+MTL. One is better at house interiors. Another does entire houses...)

At least one of these artists has kindly begun including OBJs with their DS DUF/DSF props...

Will eg G8 clothes exported as OBJ drape to Poser figures in clothing room ?? I've not found the knack of getting even Poser 'Dynamics' to 'play nice'...

@NikKelly: I've had similar experiences of venders who release stuff only for DAZ not realizing how many Poser users might also want the product and how easy it would be to prepare it for them. I'm talking about props only, of course, not characters or apparel or anything that makes use of DS-only features.

Packaging a product for DS-only does not require the OBJ (for some mysterious reason), but presumably the creator actually HAS the item's OBJ from their modeling app, along with an MTL and texture maps. Since those items can be opened by Poser or any other 3D app, why not include them in a separate folder? Naturally the items in such a folder would not make use of a proprietary material system, like DAZ's Iray, but if the original texture maps are of good quality, then that's not likely to matter to anyone willing to purchase the item for the non-DAZ version. I always customize materials anyway, and like many Poser users, I have loads of procedural materials saved that I can use for mat zones that don't need texture maps (like metals).

If I see a DS-only freebie that looks appealing, I'll download it and take a stab at converting it (by exporting it out of DS as an OBJ or other suitable format). Sometimes it's pretty easy, and sometimes it takes a bit of work. But I won't take the risk for a DS-only product I'd have to purchase, b/c it just might not be worth it. However, if the vendor included the OBJ, MTL, and image maps in a separate folder, I'd be much more likely to give it a try.

I suppose some DS-only prop vendors might feel like they have all the sales they need without doing the extra 5 minutes of prep it would take to supply the OBJ version. Or maybe some of them simply don't want to be seen to support any app other than DS?

"... other than DS?"

I suspect it may be 'contractual'.

My understanding is that DAZ sorta-deprecate inclusion of OBJs, never mind OBJ+MTL, in new products. IIRC, I've seen several legacy items re-issued as a v2 in 'modern' DS format without their original OBJs. Vendors seem NDA-grade reluctant to discuss...

My feeling is that DAZ are trying to 'gate' the DS environment via their 'software bridges' and auto-install system.

Perhaps relevant that DAZ' provision of freebies has shrunk to one (1) page of oddments, with the occasional 'theme' pack as bait. The vast range of DS freebies on eg Rendo must make them gnash their teeth...

Tangential, has any-one succeeded in getting 'Make Human' FBX format to 'play nice' with DS ? Currently, the main rig breaks to a zoo of sub-rigs during Poser import, requiring geometric gymnastics to resolve. My impression is that 'Make Human' along with Blender, 3DOC, Open3D, Noesis etc etc etc etc all use the same open-source, reverse engineered code for FBX I/O, so fail like-wise.

Beyond a very few honourable exceptions, looks like Maya FBX rigs are the only fully-Poser-compatible type. But, given Maya's price, I reckon they've licensed Autodesk's FBX SDK....

FWIW, I'd happily buy a $50+ Poser plug-in that could correctly grok majority of FBX figures' rigs, permit full posing...

And, yes, while I'm out watching for flying porcines, I sometimes hope Poser imports would extend to eg PMX & XPS. SFM seems a bit-map too far...

I agree with all of you. I am also looking for products for Poser (I create with Poser and with Vue) I am also a creator of add-ons for Poser products. I once tried to ask a Renderosity vendor if he planned to "remake" one of his (dynamic) products in order to make it work with V4 and similar figures. He replied that he had no plans for it. Like me, many others would have bought the product ...
