Subject: Any Tips for Using Camera in Tight Spaces?

I’m trying to use the inside of MeshBox’s Crazy Cat Lady Mobile Home. The only part of the mobile home that is a separate prop is the roof. The rest of the mobile home, including wheels and trailer hitch, is one solid object. I don’t know how to break the object into separate walls so I can make one invisible.

When I asked MeshBox about separating the walls they replied, “Poser needs a way to handle Booleans for rendering. For example, it should be possible to take a cylinder or cube, set it as a Boolean to the model, and then be able to use a camera in the now empty space.”

Is this possible in Poser 12? If so can someone give me directions on how to do it?

If not, is there some camera trick for this like maybe setting the focal point to a small number or something?

I really don’t want to do a top down view image but I have no choice unless someone has any suggestions. Thank you in advance.

Can the four walls of the mobile home be made different colors? In other words, are they different material zones? If so, then simply make one wall invisible. It would be a whole lot easier if we could see the scene.

Have you checked to see if there are camera settings for the interior? I've seen a site with interior renders.

Sometimes, I'm using the cam of the head of the character, or the one attached to the hips. In any case, the focal must adjusted, so that it can be moved nearer (at 95, the cam is rather far from the head, and hence from the Mobile Home)

But you may have another solution: if the walls have their own material setting, then you could use the grouping tool, and create a new group, to which you simply attach everything related to the material of the wall. That way, your mobile has a new part that can ben made invisible on demand.

I have used this technic to use a glass, with its original liquid inside fully invisible, as an example.

A product like that should removable walls, IMO.

I would probably make a transparency map for the walls, so they could be hidden.

OMG, I have had a similar problem with one of AppleJack's products, because it, too, is a single piece with no walls I can hide. Yet, one of the promo images shows exactly the "view" I wanted, but I can't figure out how to get the camera in place to view it. I bought it last year, and totally forgot about it until I just ran into this post.

I think your suggestion would be the easiest method, and I'm going to be trying it out for sure. Thank you. 🙂

If you have a specific camera angle in mind, you could use the grouping tool and save your work and use the delete polygons option to delete enough polygons to put a hole in the wall for you to see into the home. Be careful, this may mess up the UV mapping. Or you can select everything else with the grouping tool and create a prop with it. UV maps are usually okay with this method.

A trans map would be easier, but with this way, you aren't slowing down the render by rendering through a transparency.

I was using the sample version of UVMapper Pro and could create a new mapping to make each side and the floor separate. I figured I would just save out the new mapping and do a transparency map to make the side invisible. Unfortunately, I have the sample version and a message dated 2016 said they were looking for a new selling option so I can’t get the full professional model. Is there any way to do this in Poser using the grouping tools found in the cloth room?

The textures are not split out into wall1 wall2, etc. If you set the “wall” texture to invisible for the Mobile Home part, it will be invisible on every wall that has that texture map. If there are number versions such as plast, plast1, plast2, etc. it is because each plastic is a different color and some are applied to several different props.

If you just want to create new mapping, you should be able to do that with the free version of UV Mapper. UV Mapper Classic, I think they call it.

I have that version, too, so I may try it. For now, a focal point of 15 seems to be giving me enough interior scene. At least I get full reflection/refraction details this way that I would lose with an invisibility trans map. So far, I have interior lighting set up and new materials applied to make the trailer look less run down. I can’t wait to add cats and more cat decor.

you can also try scaling the camera , either uniform or just axis x,y,z scaling, for a bigger area view, you have to adjust your camera placement after doing so though. Off hand I can't remember if you have to scale it larger or smaller, though I believe it's larger ..eg. 125% etc.

You can also increase the Hither setting on the camera. Anything closer than the specified distance will not be shown. Thus, you can have your camera look through the wall. I know this works in superfly, not certain about firefly. Easier than the other solutions, especially if you plan to shift around to multiple angles. Also, creating transparent walls can affect the lighting, and the hither setting will not.

Curious. I've been playing with the various solutions, and it appears scaling the camera and hither only work in Superfly. In preview, it looks like it's working, but the obstruction is still rendered in Firefly.

I always have to group a wall and create a prop from it, which I then parent to the main prop. Then I go back into that group (in the main prop) and give it its own material, which I make transparent. I do this (rather than just deleting the polygons using the group tool) so the texture mapping on the main prop doesn't go wacky (whacky is the original spelling, fwiw). Whether or not I can delete them all depends on how the main prop is textured. I usually have to do a second wall, too. It's a pain, but walls don't have a lot of polygons, so I'm not adding a lot of extra polys to the scene.

I always appreciate when creators make removable walls.
