Poser - OFFICIAL F.A.Q (Last Updated: 2025 Feb 02 10:01 am)
Early versions didn't have named characters, merely Nude Female, Casual Female and so on. Posette and Dork were the unofficial names given to the Poser 3 models and held over for their P4 counterparts. After that, the characters were named, and Poser 5 came with Don, Judy, Will and Penny as the included figures. Incidentally, these were named after the Lost In Space TV show characters. After that, there were James, Jessi (nicknamed by me as "Flipper" due to the ludicrously short arms), Ben and Katie.
The information is available out there; there's a Wikipedia page all about Poser with a list of figures and their respective names.

On a purely personal note, I find most of the included figures range from terrible to barely useful, and most of the females to be frighteningly ugly. Posette was OK for the time but DAZ's Victoria and Victoria 2 soon put paid to that model (for me, at least). Of the others, Alyson has to be one of the ugliest things ever to escape from a modeller's hard disk, worse even than Judy - and that's saying something. Blackhearted, however, did a superb make over with Anastasia, which is a figure I use quite a bit, on the rare occasions I work with human figures.
Anyhow, the upshot of all that is that I don't bother to put the things in their own libraries; they're all in folders marked "Don't ever use these hideous things or your computer will melt". :D

To continue the list, Sydney and Simon came with P7. There was also updates to The P6 figures with Jessie and James being able to use Sydney and Simon's clothes. p8 came with Alyson and Ryan. P9 came with Alyson2 and Ryan2. They were weightmapped and I believe improved proportions. P10 was Roxie and Rex. P11 originally had Pauline and Paul, and later Added LaFemme and L'homme. P12 also includes those two as well and Dawn, Dusk and Luna, though those are Hivewire.
Available on Amazon for the Kindle E-Reader Monster of the North and The Shimmering Mage

I use Poser 13 and win 10
There are since Poser Pro also the Pro figures. They look ugly aas hello but they were intended as base for shaping in ZBrush. Up side is they are specifically intended as resource figures and you can do with them as you see fit.
At some point also the Project Human male and female were included. Public Domain as far as I know.
Paul and Pauline were launched as merchant resources, so basically free to distribute provided changed to some degree. This was at least stated repeatedly by Steve Cooper, the Poser product manager at the time. It took Smith Micro however too much pain to word this in the documents with an appropriate degree of obfuscation and illegibility for mortals not trained in US law.

Yes, of the lot of resource figures included with Poser I find the Poser Pro ones the most flexible. It's not difficult at all to sculpt/remodel into a more pleasing default mesh for further development, textures need some commited work.
Pauline's license statement in the manual has a typo and is very vague, I find those figures TOO overly developed to be useful and there's some very irritating issues with the meshes besides.
Then there's Antonia, which is CCA. I'd say, for my resource uses the PPro figs and Antonia are the best... Antonia being the most explicitly open source with no vagueness whatsoever. For certain uses her mesh needs some changes, her eyes and teeth for instance, otherwise a superb resource if you're willing to create your own textures.
The Project Human figures are too high resolution with some rather severe baked in edgeflow that makes them not very useful in my case.
Except for the obj itself, La Femme and L' Homme base and pro are merchant resources also. Included textures, materials, and morphs... for use for market targeted things.

I had the pleasure recently to attend a reunion where a bunch of the old Poser guys talked over old times. Film at 11. (Full story here.)

So through the full spectrum of Poser, Who can tell me to what all the base character models were and on what version were they released. Starting from beginning to current, and both female and male as well as Child models.
This is also going to help me place base characters with proper software in my libraries as well, lol.
