Subject: Forum weirdness

Torquinox ( ) posted Sat, 18 September 2021 at 2:23 PM · edited Sun, 22 December 2024 at 10:40 AM

In best Monty Python tradition, "I wish to register a complaint!" No it's not a dead parrot. Rather, the Blender forum is A) in the wrong place! Shoved far down the queue for no good reason and B) not showing all the latest posts. It took effort to determine this, sticky threads with very recent past are not showing. The posts and threads are still there, but they are not displaying as expected. I had to do an archive search with explicit start and end dates to see them. Please have someone look into that. Thanks!

It's not only the Blender forum with a problem. I see the same misbehavior with the Python Forum.

hborre ( ) posted Sat, 18 September 2021 at 2:54 PM

It's not misbehavior.  If you received the notice, the forum is getting a much-needed revamping.  My understanding it might take a few days to get everything in order.

RHaseltine ( ) posted Sat, 18 September 2021 at 3:39 PM

My current objection is that Mark All read no longer goes to the firum index, it stays in the current (just marked read) forum - which seems a pointless, presumably marking all read means it is finished with, and seems to involve multiple clicks (Community>Forums>All Forums) to get to the main index. I hope the old behaviour will return.

Torquinox ( ) posted Sat, 18 September 2021 at 3:39 PM

Notice? Don't recall seeing that, but it explains a lot. Thanks.

I'm with you Torq, as I was astonished the Blender forum was down at the end of the list of Software, especially since it usually has more current posts than some of the other software subforums.

I saw the notice hborre mentioned, but I don't think they said it would take days/weeks/or longer to get it fully functional again.  It's the placement of the Blender subforum that's really got me irked.

Oh and BTW, what happened to our ability to "preview" our posts before posting them?!?!?!?!?

I believe you are seeing it the way it will show up, rather than needing to check a preview. I know the emojis work differently, but the rest seems to be what you see is what you get. Click on the </> button to see under the hood of your post.

For the blender forum, mine seems to be still in the same place, alphabetically.  But I have many of the software forums hidden because I don't use them.

I'm sure they're still working out the bumps. They can't predict all possibilities for all the users.

I'm not seeing any </> button, where would I find that?  All I'm seeing are the Bold, Italic, Underscore, Remove Font Style, Link, Picture, Insert Horizontal Line, Undo, Redo and Full Screen (looks like an X with arrow heads).  I don't see anything like the button you've mentioned.   Maybe it's a Moderator option, so you see it, but I don't.

I see theer is a direct way to get to all froums from the drop-down button to the left of the search box.

Everything looks fine here.  If anything the font is a little clearer and easier to read.  I'm using a 4k monitor, too.

I can't replicate the issue described by Torquinox. Can you give me the URL of a thread that is not showing up that should be showing?

As for the list of forums. I fixed a bug where the drop-down wasn't showing all the forums you had access to. You can adjust which forums you see listed in your forum settings.

As for the preview button. There is no need for a preview button anymore because the adjustments allow you to see everything (except emojis).

Font has not been changed.

As for the "Mark Read" button, it just redirects back as you described. I can discuss this with staff if this is problematic. For clarity there are 3 different mark read buttons. 1) at the top of every forum page. 2) in forum pages. 3) in thread pages. Which button are you describing here?

Miss B ( ) posted Mon, 20 September 2021 at 2:29 PM

OK, here's a link I tried the other day.  The last post was one of mine on April 9th, so not that long ago, and what I'm seeing when I click on the forum link (Fractals), I get the following message "We couldn't find any posts to this forum in the specified archives. Try another date range!" even though I hadn't tried looking up any archives.  I didn't think a post from April 9th, in response to a post on April 8th would already be archived.

As of this morning, with respect to Blender specifically, the forum folder is still down near the bottom of the queue, but the threads seem to be displaying normally.
 And that is still the case now.

Thank you. I meant the Mark All read at the top of a particular forum, e.g. Community Centre. It used to mark everything read and go to the All Forums page, which seems sensible to me. Now it just refreshes the curent page with the threads marked as read, which I would argue is less useful since marking read seems (to me) to imply that the reader is caught-up and ready to move on.

For some time now, most of the old posts in the Poser Python forum have been letter messes only. Will it stay like this now? If so, I would like to delete the old posts. Because nobody can read that anyway.

One more :)

If I copy formatted text into the editor, it is displayed correct. Including indentation and color information. But after posting it, all indentations are gone. If I click the edit button, it comes back to the editor correctly formatted (indentations intact). But still not shown in the Forum after sending it back. Sounds like the information is there but the text isn't correctly displayed.

Here is a sample:

self.figurelist = WXtools.PrepCtrl(WXtools.ChoiceCtrl, choices=[],
name="figurelist", bgcolor=CHOICE_BG_COLOR,
tooltip="Left click to select.\n"
"Right click to reload Figurelist.",
bind=((wx.EVT_RIGHT_UP, self.updateFigurelist),
(WXtools.EVT_POPUP_SELECTION, self.onChoice))
)

Maybe it helps correcting this.

The last post in the changes wanted in the community was from March 29th. If a thread is inactive for a while, it will be archived. If there's nothing to show, it will show that message.

I can understand having a message when everything's been archived, but to have a message indicating the user didn't indicate a good date range is confusing if the person hasn't yet tried a date range in the archives.

Perhaps rewording it to specify there are no "current" posts in the forum, and to try a date range in the archives.  That would be less confusing to folks who hadn't tried a specific date range yet.

It would be nice to have thread ratings with stars somewhere under the title, visible in the forum you visit... and be able to open a poll within a thread.

Also a huge tip for your developer: limit the avatar file size to max 15 kb (20 is okay too) if you want to have a faster EVERYTHING! Make it so it accepts any file size avatar the user inputs but it automatically gets converted to 15 kb or less... ur welcome lol
