Subject: some new lights for the runetime

ghostship2 ( ) posted Sun, 24 July 2022 at 12:13 AM · edited Wed, 02 October 2024 at 4:26 AM

I was asked to come up with some new lights and a couple of mats for the default runtime in P12. Feedback if you could. Not sure if a couple of these are bright enough.

This one is called "OK it's a lot of lights"

This one is possibly a new default scene light setup.

Office Ceiling. This one would look better inside of a room with walls to bounce light back.

Look good to me, though the office ceiling light hair and lips looks a little bright/blown out on my screen.

I do love the first one, and your new default light setup.
In my case, my default scene is the following one, as I often do studio portraits. MY lights toolbox allows me to activate a group of lights, or another.

I agree with Y-Phil, the default light set-up looks very nice.  Overall, a definite improvement over what is commonly available.  I have a tendency of converting all lights to Blackbody emission for Superfly renders anyway, so those day/night time specific lights are rather subjective for me.  I'm looking forward to what you come up with.

I happen to like all of these, though the only one I'll comment on is the Moonlight set.  Since I don't always have my character(s) right up in front of the camera, I think it just a bit too dark.  Her hair and her outfit look fine, but if I had a render like that I'd think her skin is a bit too dark for natural moonlight.  Just my 2¢ FWIW.

@bwldrd

OK. Lowered lights by 10% each (there are 4). I added a room for bounce so there would be some context for the light set.

This one is called "Studio Eye Sparkles." Some special doubled up lights to get even lighting while also getting nice specular reflections.

I like them; the overblown hair and lip looks much better in the second attempt for the Office Ceiling set. The new Default Lights is sorely needed--this is 2022 and there are way too many renders still using Poser 7 style default lights because 'it's there'.

If I may make a suggestion: Would it be possible to give some directions for how to set up the scene? I often find that light sets are absolutely don't look like their promos because I lack the knowledge on the environment in which the renders were set in. To wit, the difference between your light set placed within walls vs. without. I really would appreciate, as a total end user if vendors would provide 'this is how I achieved this look' writeups.

I bought some character sets because the promo renders looked great only to discover that they only looked like that either under very specific lights/environments, or in the *other* program under their own very specific lights. Although they were useable in Poser, they looked flat and lifeless, nothing like the promo renders--the Poser skins were almost an afterthought.

@Rhia474

I get what you're saying. I once bought a V2 character that looked great in the promo renders but looked like a painted wood doll in my renders. Turned out to be burned in highlights on the face/lips. The promo renders carefully lit the figure to match the highlights. I was bummed but never burned again.

Anyway, most of my renders use HDRI lighting of some sort, either a dome or background. One thing that you get is even lighting that is pretty natural. My office ceiling lights really need to be located *inside* a box/room for the walls and ceiling to bounce light around and create the ambient light that you'd get from an HDRI. You'll notice the difference in look between the one with just the background default dome thing and the one with TrekkieGrrrl's render room. btw that is a freebee she has here at Rendo. the walls, ceiling and floor bounce light around and make the ambient lighting. You have to set diffuse bounces to at least 6 for the light to be used fully. More might also be useful. GK4MQecAhEWkyF38dSAeYIc0RuQaBSB9qTTusm4o.jpg

Thank you for taking the time for answering. Lights can make or break a render; it's amazing how different the exact same scene can look with nothing changed but the lights or the background HDRI. I will experiment with your setup a bit. That room is great, I have it, thanks for reminding me to use it!

Thinking more about what Rhia asked about while I was making some basic mats for the project. I decided that the construct needs some mats to help with the lighting. Here are a couple. These combine one of the light sets with mats for the construct that also provide some ambient light.

That looks great. I must confess I don't use the Construct at all, due to not really being successful with achieving good environments with it at all. I either use the background node or EZDome. I probably should explore it more.

ghostship2 ( ) posted Wed, 27 July 2022 at 10:46 AM

@Rhia I don't use it much either but it's a nice option and it has a real mesh floor/ground for objects/figures to stand on.
