Subject: export to .obj

jstro ( ) posted Sat, 27 October 2001 at 10:26 AM · edited Wed, 15 January 2025 at 5:08 AM

I am trying to export a Poser character as a .obj file to see if the new Wings 3D modeler can import them, with an eye towards doing morph targets if they will load. My first try did not work, so I was wondering if someone could advise me on the best settings on the Poser export menus to get the best possible generic .obj file. Should I uncheck the Universe box for example? Any other options I should change from the defaults to give Wings it's best chance at import? All suggestions welcome. Thanks. jon

Hi Jon, fraid I beat you to it, I've just submited a bug on wings sourceforge page.

I was a little concerned because it doesn't import posers .obj geometery files either which is needed for conforming clothing.

It shouldn't really matter what bits of a poser object you choose for export due to the way the wavefront format works. I've written obj exporters and importers and always used poser characters as my 'soak test' as use all the vertex based features of file format, they're big and they're valid.

Glad you posted a bug. Sounds like you have some expertise in the matter. Maybe you can point Bjorng in the right direction. He has been making amazing progress in a very short time. Wings will be a killer app if he gets it to import and export poser files. jon

I tried exporting in 3DS format earier and it worked in wings if you exported each body part as a separate group, but failed if you exported the whole body as one group. I wonder if wings has a hidden limit somewhere ? Dave

try opening the obj in uvmapper then save it.....don't adjust any settings just save as is, that fixes loads of import problems........Steve

rather than "exporting" from Poser, have you tried using the base .obj file in the Runtime/geometries/ folder?

Nance, no its doesn't work but gives a different error, I think due to the first line being g instead of g groupname Dave
