Subject: Is UV Mapper still a thing? Does it work under Windows 11?

Joe@HFG ( ) posted Sat, 28 January 2023 at 8:53 PM · edited Mon, 25 November 2024 at 7:41 AM

I'm just getting back after a 15 Year hiatus. ( I WAS NOT in jail. LOL)
Is UV mapper still the weapon of choice for modding Poser UVs?

I still use UV Mapper Pro to test that UVs remain intact if I make changes while creating content, but it appears to me that there haven't been any updates since 2016 and the link to purchase goes to a non-existent store. While it still works, and does work under Win 11, there are other options that are much more powerful.

My UV weapon of choice is Rizom UV Virtual Spaces, which is amazing.   https://www.rizom-lab.com/rizomuv-vs/  The perpetual license is 150 (euro)

Others use Headus UV Layout www.uvlayout.com  which is roughly the same price. Maybe a tad higher than Rizom.

Your modeling software more than likely has UV mapping features as well, if you have one.

Thanks for reply. UV mapper had a nice feature where if you redid a UV map, you could extract it by itself, and other who had the same figure could put your UV Map on the figure.

Blender has every tool in the world. LOL.
My Lightwave work flow let me build my UV Map at the same time as I modeled. I could model a figure to a UV instead of Fighting to UV Map the figure after I modeled it.

There may be a way to do it in Blender, but I'm too noob, and I haven't found a tutorial that explains UV Mapping the way I know it.

I second Rizom. It also has a subscribe to own, $16 a month subscribe for a perpetual option, 1 month free trial... Every modern bell and whistle you can imagine.

Blender is pretty good. UDIM set up in there is a bit weird, well a bit hoop jumping last I looked. There's nice add ons for packing and stuff. There's a million tutorials for Blender on YT.

While UV Mapper does still run under Windows 10 and 11, the main caveat in relying on the Export UVs and Import UVs feature in that is, the people on the other end also need UV Mapper to apply the UVs to their model. And with it no longer being available for sale, and not updated since 2016, that makes it a risky prospect. 8-(

I suppose the same would be true if you used any other program to save only the UVs. The person on the other side would need the same program to apply them.

The only other way I see to do it is to Dif encode the original obj to a new model.
Anyone still doing THAT?

It should be quite easy to write a pair of programs that extract the UV information from a given mesh in, say, OBJ format and inject it into another one.

IIRC, UV Mapper Classic is still available, still free...

http://www.uvmapper.com/

I'm no Mapper guru, I can't yet shuffle out-lying map portions into neat, neighbourly positions. But, especially for older OBJs that say 'template available on forum', but that's long gone, trying different un-wraps often gives a match to the texture maps. Because, yes, 'Classic' was so the 'GoTo' app...

Trying to find the teeny-tiny portion of a complex 2k or 4k texture that 'works' eg a vehicle's mirror, side-window or lamp, so you can mask emission and transparency, can still end up as a 'binary chop'. IIRC, my 'worst case' hunt took 19 tries...
