Subject: Odd issue in poser 13 Firefly

DownTown37 ( ) posted Fri, 07 July 2023 at 4:24 PM · edited Thu, 28 November 2024 at 1:25 PM

When adding a background image into the background and rendered with firefly the background image is squished causing blank borders. Also the background image gets distorted.

This happens always on the second render the first keeps the full size just after loading, after moving the cam or adding any model to the scene the background is squished again

if rendering the scene with any other engine, superfly, sketch or preview the background is rendered normally and fills the window !! it resulted that any render with background needs to be done in a previous Poser version in order to work ending up to be totally useless in Poser 13.

Either it is only me or no one ever tested "Checked" Firefly renders with backgrounds in Poser 13, someone who has time might check if it is a Poser issue or only me that is encountering this phenomenon in Poser 13 firefly.

Sample: This is the first render right after a setup size of background is as it should be

Sample: Now rendering again and getting such a background , it can't be undone, it can't be fixed unless creating a whole new scene, to get the full undistorted background so getting just one shot that is working after that background is broken. Note only Firefly has this issue but making it useless in Poser 13

I hope that someone can confirm this issue and take some time making a short 2x render with background in firefly with poser 13 this will save me having to search for a only poser issue on my system. " Hope it is not just me "

The second issue is when trying to change the background , replace it it will keep the first one. Again only in firefly if rendering in Superfly the new Image will render but Firefly keeps the broken one until creating a new scene.

! Poser version is latest release !

Btw: Already tested by changing the Nvidia drivers 4 versions 2 game 2 normal, firefly issue remains, not a Driver issue!  Previous Poser versions do not brake the background it only happens in Poser 13 firefly.

This is probably the setting you're looking for ...

Richard60 ( ) posted Fri, 07 July 2023 at 7:10 PM

Not sure how you are setting up the background picture, but here are a couple of things to try.

1:  In the material room set the U_scale anv V_scale to the ratio of the picture you are using.  A 1920x1080 picture be 1.7777 to 1 1980/1080 or 16/9.  This keeps the vertical scale the same so the whole picture fits on the background.

2:  in the U_offset set that value to -.38888.  That is 1/2 the value of the decimal portion of the U scale above.  This sets the start of the picture to the edge of the render frame.

3: Make sure autofit is not checked.

You can render frames without it shrinking. Not sure exactly sure what you are doing, but it appears that Poser is defaulting to the settings in the Material Room setup for a BG Picture, which is a 1 to 1 ratio which is why the picture turns square.  If your Back Ground picture does not have to have every single pixel you might make the U scale a tab larger and have the two edges be cropped during the render.  Looking at your example picture losing a bit on the two edges won't effect things that much.

You should write up a help ticket for your issue and give them all the details about what problem you are having.  Poser Support (posersoftware.com)

@Nerd that does not seems to work.

In fact checking the Autofit causes the picture to return to that 1x1 ratio format.

I can confirm the illustrated set up Nerd posted above.  You do need to have Auto-Fit checked.

here are 3 pictures in P13 with FireFly

This is Preview with Auto Fit not checked.  The image is 1919x1085, basically 16x9.

This is Preview with Auto Fit checked.  Notice if does not quite fit the Preview window.

This is the Rendered image with Auto Fit checked.  Notice it is back to being a 1x1 aspect ratio.  And when it is rendered in SuperFly it looks like the middle image.  So Fire fly does have a problem and I have put in a ticket for this problem.

However if you go in and mnually set up the Back Ground image to be the proper size and DON'T have autofit checked as listed above then Fire Fly will work.

Assuming that almost no one is using the firefly render in Poser 13, I tried all the above settings but it will always make a square background no matter if autofit is checked or not. The scene will certainly fall out of the background. If you try loading a new background replace it through the interface it will keep the first one, you can only change it in the material room in order to work in firefly.

So in theory all these auto features and buttons are useless if for firefly the background aspect needs to be done manually ? This would mean that the better choice is to render firefly in a Previous poser version 10 11 or 12 saving allot of trouble.

I hope that it does not also affect the texture setup on a model in firefly when rendering if the autofit is not working as it should making Images 1:1 square. Will have to test it on a square plane to see if it is only happening on the background.

Tested the background setup on a back plane, this works but naturally the size will not be adapted like the background to the Image. So the Issue is only concerning the background in fiefly  of poser 13. Also tested all the previous Poser versions if they are affected with this issue in case that a Win update caused a issue but all works like a charm in older poser versions.

Meaning all the background features in P13 are broken. Render dimension setup is not working in combination with a background, Importing a new background does not work, removing the background does not work, changing the Auto_ Fit feature in the material room does not work. The background feature is actually a essential feature for final renders if not filling up the whole scene with meshes without this feature working correctly Firefly is almost useless and broken.

The Back Ground Picture feature has always been very limited, which is why most people choose a background plane or other method to put in backgrounds.  Below is a render from Poser 10 using the Background picture the render was done at 1920x1080, whereas the BG picture is 1919x1085.  This was with AutoFit on.  Notice the sides have a border where the BG fails to meet the edges.  That is because the AutoFit puts the whole image on screen to the setting of the render dimensions, which means the vertical is shrunk by 5 pixels which means the sides also shrink by a couple pixels each.  Also, if the autofit was not selected then the picture comes in square as that is the default setting for the node is U_Scale 1 V_Scale 1.

So the BG picture and render only work IF both are the exact same dimensions, otherwise you end up with the borders on the sides or top and bottom.

Allowed my self using your car Image ...

I Import the Image File - Import - Background Picture, select the car image " That I just cut for my preference in a Image editor size now 1714x 828 ", Poser asks " Change Window to match background " Click Yes .... Hit render

Render no Borders, actually never had any until Poser 13

Rendered in Poser 11

Poser 13 firefly is really messed up :(

Doing the exact same steps in Poser 13 like above importing the Image allow Poser to fit window to Image and I get this in Firefly

IZtFaQr6U11kSo0ZocdlHnl2KN2WGiRCWqjYPm7j.png

If I render in Superfly "Just changing the render engine"  P13 it works with no borders at all

uctzAQxzohfNQS7kkoz2sHnjTLrtoZp9QT0pZTYa.png

Poser does normally a perfect job sizing the render area fitting to the background with no borders at all no matter what aspect your Image has. It sure is a time saver rather then using Planes adapting these to have a backdrop.

For sure something that needs to be fixed ..... It can not be that prior Poser versions work better then the new flagship !

DownTown37

I just checked and your issue has been reported to the Dev team. Thank you for bringing this up as an issue.
