Subject: Problems rendering backgrounds in Superfly

Clemenceau ( ) posted Sat, 16 December 2023 at 10:09 AM · edited Sun, 17 November 2024 at 8:30 PM

For some time now when I've rendered in Superfly,  the backgrounds have usually rendered black.  It makes no difference whether I select the option for a "transparent background" or whether I have a 2D image background, it renders out black.  It doesn't always happen, but I can't find a pattern.

My GPU is Geforce RTX 3060, running Windows 11.  I also have a drop-down option to use "OPTIX: NVIDIA Geforce RTX 3060" and "12th Gen Intel Core i5 - 12400."  None of these options will produce the desired background (with 2D image or transparent).

In this scene,  the asian temple at the top left is a 2d background .jpg but it won't show up when rendering in Superfly.  Because there are several IDL light sources in this scene, it's impossible to get it rendered in Firefly.  So far I'm stumped as to how I can get this to render with a background, or failing that, at least a transparent image so I can assemble it in PS.

Is this a bug, or user error?

Is this background a plane or are you using Poser's background? Is enough light getting to it? Try making it an emitter to see if it shows up. Is it outside the camera's range? Increase the yon on the camera. Is the construct blocking it? These are a few suggestions that might help.

Hi, and thanks for responding...

To answer your question, this background was inserted by File --->  Import ---> Background picture.

This project is merely one example,  this is a commonly occurring problem for me with different scenes.  But even when there is no background picture, this doesn't explain why, when I export it as a .png, the background is black instead of transparent, even though that checkbox is ticked before starting the render. This problem doesn't occur in Firefly.

I do have Poser 11 running on a different machine, but the Superfly renders don't exhibit this problem.

I have a workaround for this (knocking out the black background and assembling in PS), but that can be arduous if there's a lot of detail, and I just wondered why it continues to happen.

I've just tried a render with a background image similar to your description and it rendered and exported fine.  This may sound stupid but did you make the construct invisible, either physically or in the camera view?

Hi,  I'm not even sure how to make the background visible or invisible.  I always assumed it would be visible once imported?  If you mean, did I go into parameters and turn off the visibility? No,  I didn't do that.
