Subject: contest renders - creation time

maneki_neko ( ) posted Wed, 13 March 2024 at 1:46 PM · edited Sat, 21 December 2024 at 11:31 PM

i never count the time i spend creating a scene, rendering it, doing postwork... first of all my workflow is a totally erratic chaos. i start, stop, make pauses for minutes, days, months, whatever. i also spend way more time creating and rendering as i should because my laptop is a sorry lame old piece of crap and most of my "work time" is spent waiting for something - with a new machine i'd work i dunno how many times faster.

so the question "how much time spent" under contest submissions is a big pain for me, i have no idea, i try to estimate but i'm sure it's way not accurate at all, not even close.

can't you add the possibility to say "no idea", or to skip the question altogether? so those who want/can answer can do it, and the others drop it...

I think most of us work as you do. I do not think the times that people are giving is a true reflection on how much time they are spending on a project. I do not include the time spend rendering, because in my opinion the computer is doing the work and I am off doing something else.

I am exactly the same, I will start, then stop, then start again. Sometimes pause for days, it's so hard to keep a track of time. Not to mention that I might put together the render quickly (clothing, makeup, lights, setting etc) and then get stuck on a minor detail and spend hours trying to perfect that one silly item or find that one prop I absolutely need for the scene. I am a very nitpicky person so I am positive I spend way too much time on things that others probably don't even notice. The hours that I put on my last entries were just rough estimates, I am sure they are nowhere close to reality.

i agree, would have been unexpected that everyone keeps book of their work, unless pro... and rendering is indeed not "work", plus dependent on the hardware quality.

lol, i absolutely know where you come from with the getting stuck on a minor detail... or the search for that one prop - having tons of GB of purchased items and just not that matching thing for a scene... which will prolly end up being a freebie.

Major contests allow two months of creation time. Smaller contests allow for one month of creation time. You can also enter art that you created in the past.

ah the question was about how many hours were spent working on a scene/render... but i didn't know there was a limitation about WHEN the render had been done.. i have no idea i or rather which of the last i submitted for the pinup contest were older than 2 years, some surely were... is that written anywhere in any rules?

She means that the duration of the contest runs 1 to 2 months in duration. The time it took you to create your image isn't part of what qualifies your image. And as far as how long your image takes, a rough estimate is fine.

"my workflow is a totally erratic chaos.." Oh, man...... You've never seen my workflow (or what passes as one...) And don't even get me started on my file system (dis)organization! I spend most of my "creative" time looking for stuff! 😂
