Subject: Atmosphere Volume Blacking Out Scene

OberonRex ( ) posted Sat, 25 May 2024 at 8:16 AM · edited Tue, 19 November 2024 at 5:31 AM

When I turn on Atmosphere Volume in a *new* scene (or any of my recent ones):

my scene renders as completely black.

If I render a scene from several months ago, atmosphere works correctly, adding a foggy blur as expected.

It would seem that it's some sort of global setting, given that old scenes work fine but recent ones and new ones do not, so I compared the settings from Atmosphere and Render Settings and cannot find anything different.

It seems that it might be that the sensivity to Volumne_Density is very, very high. A setting of something like 0.0000001 seems to sort of work, except that it's too sensitive to fine tune.

Is your scene contained within a 'Render' box, or 'Ground' prop?  That might make a difference.  Most other users relying on the atmosphere volume surround their scene within a confining box or sphere.

Ah... It seems that I recently changed my New Scene to use an Infinite light instead of a spot light, and that seems to be what is causing the issue. It appears that an infinite light is cancelled out completely using Atmosphere Volume with the default values. Turning on a spotlight shows the fog...

Is this a bug in infinite lighting and atmosphere, or am I missing something?

hborre -- I have no clue what it means to contain my scene within a Render box or Ground prop. Or to use a confining box or sphere. But it sounds absolutely fascinating and I definitely want to know more. Me? I just start with more-or-less the original Default New scene, tarted up just a wee bit. Ground, Model, Light. Target ball. That's it. Within that context, turning on Atmosphere Volume gets me a beautiful hazy look (except when using Infinite only), but it's for the whole scene. Nothing confined about it.

Can you tell me more? Or point me somewhere to read?

I'm linking a thread that covers the cube and fog trick: https://www.renderosity.com/forums/threads/2978429/show-your-poser-13-renders?page=22

The thread is on Poser 13, but this feature can be found in Poser 11.

BTW, with a troublesome render using the Infinite light, switch to a point light unless you want God-rays in the scene.

Wow, hborre! I did a quick read. And will have to go back and do a long read, maybe a couple of times. Very interesting.
