Subject: WIP: BV 141 WW II Reconnaissance Aircraft

The Blohm & Voss BV 141 was a World War II German tactical reconnaissance aircraft, notable for its structural asymmetry.  The Plexiglas-glazed crew gondola on the starboard side held the pilot, observer and rear gunner, while the sleek fuselage on the port side held a radial engine and an asymmetrical tail.  Several prototypes and twenty production models were built.

I began this model back in 2008 and only recently rediscovered it.  There are lots of plan drawings available on the Internet, but many details among them, making it a challenge to build a consistent mesh.  There are many period photos as well detail photos of scale models.  The challenge here is likewise to find and address differences in depictions.

Here's an early cartoon render. uMYjg4M4RctstLUGL0INxcYGgY7lHCKsJ52KWSVY.jpg

Some refinement plus a landing gear test.

When I originally started this way back I used a complicated modelling technique on the crew gondola so my challenge now is to refine it for completion,

Some progress on the gondola.

Looking good

The original crew gondola mesh turned out to be dirtier than I thought, requiring lots of tiny detail mods.  The inverted facets aren't visible in the render, but some discontinuities are.  This is a busy time for me so I'll be surprised if this figure doesn't slip into '25.

It's not obvious from the render but the crew gondola shell is a lot less ratty. I still need to finish the nose, top turret and the hatches, and the whole interior.

The front end of the crew gondola is largely done.  The specs for the plane called for lots of glass.
