Subject: Material room in Poser 13

fluffykatt ( ) posted Thu, 26 December 2024 at 10:11 PM · edited Thu, 02 January 2025 at 11:39 AM

I just bought Poser 13. I have been working in Poser Pro 11 & thought I'd get a later program. While I'm no expert I have managed to do fairly well in Poser Pro 11 and have been changing the material on my renders but they have completely changed the material room in Poser 13 & I'm lost. I can't make it do like PP11 so I'm losing my ability to make my renders the way I want them instead of exactly like how the vendor has made them look. Is there any help somewhere that I can learn how to get that possibly back?

Were you using the simple material layout? That was removed due to incompatibilities to superfly. There were also some updates to superfly. Can you post a sample or 2? Maybe we can help you get started. Also, you didn't mention if you were using firefly or superfly.

Yes, I was using the simple material layout in Poser Pro 11 & I mostly used firefly. In that I only had to click on the box that would take me to the textures & if I didn't want to use any of those textures, I could go from there to a folder on my computer that held the many materials I have bought over the last years that didn't go in my runtime materials. If the textures I wanted to use were in my runtime, then I looked through them & changed the texture with whatever I wanted. In Poser 13 I can't even find the texture so I'm not able to change whatever I want to change. I guess I may have to go back to using Poser Pro 11, I'm so happy I didn't upgrade & brought the full Poser 13 so I can go back to Pp11, I think I just wasted my money buying Poser 13 because I'll never learn to do what I want to in Poser 13 because it doesn't work for me. Thank you for your reply.

That is, of course, your decision, but I would encourage you to peruse the manual where the material room is explained. There are also video tutorials on this very site. Your version will become obsolete at some point and future versions of Poser won't change this back I don't think.

And it is very easy to pull a texture in from a folder on your computer. You literally can drag and drop and then connect it.

The OP is not the first person to ever bring this up....

I would file a ticket on it and ask for the pane back.

The addition of Superfly was never meant or supposed to change Firefly at all. It obviously did......

What the OP has stated shows without a doubt that it did change it for many users... And if it alienated one, it will alienate many more that never say a word...

It is true that the simple material section didn't work properly with Superfly. Neither do the Firefly render settings, and they remained unchanged.

There is room for another tab, to retain Firefly the way it was in the past.

It was a choice to remove it. An odd one at that....

Nothing can remain the same, when you remove part of it....

Some things are easy to explain, other things are not........ <- Store ->   <-Freebies->

You can use P11 and P13 even if you bought 13 with an upgrade license.

You say you can't even find the texture, I'm curious as to what you mean.gan24BkMzzFwuYAJXiSUuNYOvOt4uryCsDDPdmrn.png

If you see something like this. You can either click on the edit tab, that I have boxed in red, or you can click on the pen and paper icon for the material zone you wish to change which I have boxed in black. That will take you to the editor page that you are more familiar with.

Beyond that, things work like they do in P11.

Sunfire, thank you for your reply but I still cannot figure this out. I'm not very computer savvy, I am 81 years old so I come from a generation when there were no computers. I can only do simple& then I don't really know what I'm doing I just do things by trial & error, not computer understanding, and yes I know soon PP11 will eventually no longer work but will probably not be here when it no longer works I have already battled cancer twice & I have told my family I am not taking the treatment that is almost as bad on me as the cancer if the cancer does come back. I just want to do a little simple art while I'm alive to fill my time I have left. I have Windows 10 on my computer & I know I will have to buy a new computer when it stops working inless than a year & I don't know if I will buy another computer as I say I will probably not be in within the next few years. Anyway my point is I need simple because I don't understand complicated like you smart people do I'm just too old.

Don't give up too quickly on Poser 13. If I can learn it, anyone can.

To find your old materials, they should be in the same place. You will need to add your poser 11 runtime to Poser 13.

To do that, click on the add runtime button

Then navigate to where you have your Poser 11 runtime.

You'll end up with something along the line of this

To change the image that is texturing the item

Look for the image map plugged into the Diffuse color. That is what you'll want to change. The rest of the node things you'll want to ignore because they were things you weren't changing with the simple version. I underlined the Transparency to show where to plug those maps. With as little patience and asking here, we can help you learn to use the edit tab.

You can also as shvrdavid suggests, make a request at https://support.posersoftware.com/ to have it brought back.

RedPhantom, thank you for your reply.  I have brought my Runtime into P13, I have it on an external  hard drive because I have so much Poser stuff I have bought since 2010 when I started in Poser 7 my computer will not handle it all.  I have figured out how to bring the material from my runtime into the material room & change the materials but I can't figure out how to get to the many materials that I bought that didn't come in a runtime that I have stored in a file in my documents. Do I have to put them in my runtime & how do I do that?

By materials you're referring to mt5 or mc6 files, correct?

You can move those into any runtime that is part of your library. You can drag and drop them using explorer.

In explorer, the runtime looks something like this

You'll want to put them in one of the folders under the library folder. Materials is usually the go to one because it was created for that, but some find it easier to put it in one of the others because it makes more sense to them. I put my mat poses in the material folder so I don't have to look in 2 places for them.

Then make sure the textures (image maps) are in the texture folder.
