Subject: Poser 4 and Windows XP

Should I expect any trouble using Poser 4 with Windows XP? It's been fine so far - but will there be problems down the road? Any bad experiences?

I haven't had a bad XPerience yet ;). I don't think you'll have any :). Laurie

There are several Poser/Windows XP threads in the forums already. I ran Windows XP Release Candidates 1&2 before finally installing Windows XP Home Edition. I loved XP then and now. Everything is so much better, faster, more well behaved. I wiped my hard drives to install Windows XP and all my software from scratch. Even Microsoft Office 2000 installed quickly. That installation usually takes so very long that I often fall asleep watching it.

Appreciate the feedback. Very encouraging. (It's not all roses however; Photoshop 4.0 crashes on XP and Adobe doesn't provide fixes as a matter of policy but upgrades its new versions.)

To tell you the honest truth, there comes a time when we need to upgrade our software. PhotoShop is now up to Version 6... Heh, I still have 5.5...

moushie ( ) posted Mon, 05 November 2001 at 10:07 AM

But Photoshop 6 isn't ready for XP or I'd upgrade right away. Are you running Photoshop 5.5 successfully with Windows XP?

ronknights ( ) posted Mon, 05 November 2001 at 10:32 AM

I'm not sure why PhotoShop or any program "needs to be ready" for XP. Usually the only programs that may have problems with new operating systems are utilities, such as Norton SystemWorks. One can understand why you'd need to get a new version of Norton SystemWorks when it works closely with the operating system. I've been happily running all my "old software" with really no problems. Yes, Adobe PhotoShop 5.5 works, as does Macromedia Fireworks, etc etc. ThumbsPlus seems to be having some problems with files created by Corel Dream 3D... That's a program I had for years but never used. There is something about the way Corel Dream 3D handles TIF files that ThumbsPlus doesn't like. I see a nice long error message when I check out the images. I don't think that's a Windows XP problem, just a Corel problem for an old program that isn't even in the current version of Corel Draw.

I have Vue d'Esprit 3.1 and it will not run in XP, not even in compatibility mode. It's the only program that I have that doesn't run however. Of all the programs I have that do run, they all run well with no problems. Laurie

So is your Vue d'Esprit 3.1 an old version of the software? Windows XP is our way to finally break free of the old DOS and Windows 3.X legacy software that should have been retired years ago.

LaurieA ( ) posted Mon, 05 November 2001 at 11:40 AM

Vue 3.1 is a version back, but it's only about 1.5 years old. I have a friend that runs this version and he has no problems, but he is running XP Pro and I am running XP Home. It shouldn't make a difference, but you never know...it might. Anyway, I've decided to upgrade my software anyway and everyone assures me that Vue 4 does indeed run under Windows XP :). No big deal :). I should have the latest version of the software anyway since I'm a moderator for the Vue forum at www.big-i.com ;). At least I can say I've tested the older version on Windows XP!...LOL. Laurie

I wonder, did you do a clean install of Windows XP, or did you upgrade over top of a previous version of Windows? I always prefer to wipe my hard drive and start over from scratch. It just seems to work better that way.

LaurieA ( ) posted Mon, 05 November 2001 at 11:59 AM

I always format before an install :). So it's not because I didn't do a clean installation ;). The only thing that may differ between my install and my friends install (where Vue 3.1 does run) is that I opted to format my hardrive and install XP in FAT32. I could have used FAT32 or NTFS. I'm not sure, but I think XP Pro doesn't even give you the option to format in anything other than NTFS. I'm not sure if that's correct tho. Laurie

"But Photoshop 6 isn't ready for XP or I'd upgrade right away. Are you running Photoshop 5.5 successfully with Windows XP?" PS 6.1 runs just fine under XP.

ronknights ( ) posted Mon, 05 November 2001 at 5:33 PM

I'm running PhotoShop 5.5 and a host of other software just fine on Windows XP, and have on Windows 98 & ME.

moushie ( ) posted Mon, 05 November 2001 at 9:43 PM

So -- conclusion: 1. Photoshop 4.0 doesn't run well on Windows XP (mine crashes). 2. Photoshop 5.5 does just fine with XP (we're informed). 3. So an upgrade to Photoshop 6.0 to work with Windows XP should be a safe move. Thanks, everybody.
